Nice bit of kit Azzab, lets have a few pics mate when you get her and the rest of the herd! [thumbup] Here's a pic of my Standard again, for those that missed the other 72 times [laugh] !!

Will do Stevie,

Man, that just looks LUSCIOUS! I've always loved the SG's, from Sabbath, Nazareth, AC/DC, Hendrix etc. etc. they just sound and look so cool! My main dilemma at the moment is the amp choice; Marshall Class 5, or Hughes & Kettner Tubemeister 36, both seem ideal for home use, as they have switchable wattage, but will 1 channel suffice, or will 3 be better? Whatever, I guess, I'll pick one and buy this week if I can; pictures to follow :D

Thanks for posting that picture, when I look at it, it's like looking at a sexy woman - captivating & breathtaking! Presume it's a UK buy, what store?

Nice collection you have too!

Hi Azzab,

Yeah, I understand the love for SG's. I got mine through Richtone - online so it was a gamble really, as I usually have played then bought - mind you so was the Epi SG I got in pelham blue from a guy on eBay, I had to take that to a local tech in the end, as I had a hell of a job trying to get the intonation in - and gave up lol! Anyway I got the Standard on finance over a year, I've already gathered £300, so I might pay it off early - hopefully!! Amps...well that's another one I need to spend a bit of cash on - but all in time, at the moment I have a Fender Mustang II which is ok, but the effects can be a pain the a$$ sometimes. You also have to reset them when you get fed up of them, I'm really after a decent Orange amp, but I'll have to get a bit of cash built up first.

[wink]

When I was a lad, I subscribed to the idea that a good amp should be a one trick pony. That is, you get a nice tube amp that has one great tone. Most things that are great at one thing are lousy at many things, and most things that are good at many things are great at none. Amps seem to fit this characterization just as well as cars, bicycles, and screwdrivers.

You can use your volume and tone knobs instead of channels. You can go from woman tone to sparkle with just the guitar's controls. I think using the volume knob is a lost art nowadays, but it's still a great way to go from clean to crunch without a foot switch. Channels are a convenient way to boost the gain, but I don't think you're going to need them -- particularly if you're getting an effects processor, though I recognize the desire to explore tone and equipment. Ultimately, I think your best bet is to go listen to each amp and pick the one that sounds better. I've never heard either amp, but I think you'll be disappointed later if you get the one that doesn't sound as good in favor of the one with prettier tolex.

Full disclosure: because I'm not performing anymore and just playing for myself, I bought a Vox Valvetronix for well under $200. I replaced the speaker to get a more meaty sound. It comes with 99 different amp models, and I typically just use one (though from time to time I do use a second). If I could justify the expense or the necessary volume, I'd be using a Deluxe or maybe a Bluesbreaker because those amps each do one sound really, really well.

Good luck on your purchase!

I tried photo bucket and somehow all of my photos ended up there and i came close to loosing my privacy. Had to get somebody to clean that up for me lol i hope i end up with one that has nice wood. Can you think of a tune where someone uses the old side to side vibrola?

Ummm, not right off hand, SGplayers, but Sister Rosetta Tharpe, had a Custom SG, with that side to side, vibrola.

I'm sure there are others, I can't think of, or remember anymore, that did. Is that what your's

has...instead of the standard Maestro?

Oh, I think James Hetfield, has one, as well. Not sure, though, how often he uses that particular

SG-Les Paul.

No I didn't know they still offered it. we were just talking about it and couldn't come up with a recording where we knew of it being used. thought it was a good question for the forum.

Yeah, as far as I know, they only offer the regular "Maestro," on SG's, unless you special

order a Bigsby, or maybe a Floyd Rose? But, I think those would be Custom Shop orders! [tongue]

Very good point; I watched the Marshall Class 5 demo, and it was controlled with the volume to get the different sounds, very effectively too! The Tubemeister is £200:00 more, but I'm leaning towards BOTH!

I'm just buying the gear on-line, both amps sound great on their demo's, and will sound different here [as I can't play yet] too, they both have great reviews so I doubt I'll go wrong with either [unsure]

I've found a store that gives a 4 year guarantee with everything, so am contemplating buying cash rather than credit if I can, extra peace of mind is worth it :D

I'll make my mind up eventually!

  • 2 months later...

Well, I finally bought the kit: -

  •
  • SG Standard 2013 in Heritage Cherry
  • Hughes and Kettner Tubemeister 36 Valve Amp
  • BOSS ME-70 Effects Processor

ME-70 is due Tuesday, so I'll post a picture or two next week. I found a minute scratch on the truss rod cover of the SG, (which was replaced), but I also bought another [original part] with the "Standard" logo on, and fitted that; I think it looks better!

Very happy with it all, had a nice surprise with the SG as the company threw in a Korg clip-on tuner, guitar stand, pack of 10 Jim Dunlop picks, Jim Dunlop guitar polish, a learn guitar magazine with CD/DVD [albeit in German!], and a nice lead - for FREE! Very happy :D

Now I'm dedicating as much time as I can to learn, I know quite a few chords, am learning some power chords so I can play/try to play Iron Man and Paranoid [for starters], and am learning various scales, hoping I can get a lot better at these and playing said scales/switching chords comfortably, killing my fingers trying to stretch them, but little steps...!
