Homz
An article I read in "The Fretboard Journal" made me think of this question. I'll go with the Brazilian rosewood.
Taylor Player
I would have to say it is a combination of several things but to me, a luthiers construction technique is the most important determination. Yes wood certainly vary's the tone, but bracing patterns, soundboard thickness, and other factors that come to play with various luthiers is typically the largest determination of overall tone IMO. Homz
Good point Taylor. When they left the ladder bracing for the X type it changed the acoustic for ever. See nay-sayers I can at times actually post real guitar stuff. Even if the others are more fun. How's your nut? Where's Neo when we need him? gearbasher
My theory is the intruments aged 50+ years. Dry wood, brittle nitro. Give it 50 more years and they'll sound like crap and todays acoustics will be the holy grail. Just my uneducated opinion.
SRV-Zeppelin
I agree with gearbasher... why do you think 59 Pauls are so famous? It's because the magnets in the pups have had 50 years to mellow out and sweeten and warm up the tone.
Thundergod
None of the above... everyone knows tone rests in the pickguard. So if you are talking about pickguardless guitars, then you can't talk about tone.

Bet that would go over well the next time you crossed the border with you favorite ax.
