Old Gibson SG: what model and year?

Oh, that really narrows it down! (guitar dater strikes again)

Get off the internet and go to the library (or a BOOK STORE, remember them?). There are tons of legitimately published books on the history of Gibson guitars and their ID. Go BUY one!

Hello, the Nashville plant hadn't opened yet in 1970-72. Do what Larry suggests, and stop promoting that site. You can always go here, if you want an online source that's reasonably accurate: http://home.provide....cfh/gibson.html

Not promoting anything, just telling you where I got my information. The guitar looks like a Norlin era SG and that's all I know. If you could be of more help to this person, maybe you should help them

According to your site:

1969-1975: 6 digit peghead stamped serial number, MADE IN USA stamped below.

Well, I guess I helped by pointing out that it couldn't have been made in Nashville during those years, right? Beyond that, there are cases where Gibson's numbering system was too flawed to allow for accurate dating using serial numbers. The point is, that "guitar dater project" website is notorious for spreading bogus information. Larry and I and other regulars here get tired of seeing the bogus info being spread around.

I believe it's a 73 or 74 SG Standard. Frank Zappa played one of those. The best way to confirm the date would be by reading the date codes on the back of the pots.

The irony of this is, the person who posted the original question does not even seem to be reading the thread.

That sounds about right, based on Gibson catalogs of the period:
