RichCI
I just swapped out the 12AX7/ECC83 preamp tube on my 1966 Fender Champ. Removed: old German made Telefunken Replaced with: New Russian Tung-Sol The Tung-Sol sound better to my ear; it felt a little looser and broke up in a smoother manner with a little bit more high end. Conclusion: Just because it's old or vintage, doesn't mean it's better.
surfpup
I've found the same thing. I have a couple vintage Telefunkens in my old silverface Deluxe Reverb. I have tried them in a number of modern amps to see how they sounded. In each case the Tung Sol 12AX7s smoked 'em. IMHO, you can't beat the Tung Sol in modern amps - save the Telefunkens and RCAs for the vintage amps.
Thundergod
Hey man, good to hear that... have you tried JJs? Those are great tubes.
saturn
I had some old 12AX7s too. Don't know if they were Telefunken, but they said The Fisher Made In West Germany. I liked them in my Crate Blue Voodoo until the tranformer went up in that one and then I sold them on Ebay. I didn't care as much for them in my B-52.
