crust Posted August 15, 2014 Share Posted August 15, 2014 Of course! I knew something was different about these. They don't have a pick guard. I need one of those for my playing style. How do y'all like it without? Any problems? I try to keep the playing to finger style, or something similar and just turn everything up for volume. I don't use a pick on them, yet. I like effects and, so far, haven't really needed a pick on this and a few others I recently obtained that didn't have the pick guard installed. A "kit" with the guard and mounting hardware was included with the guitar taped inside a plastic bag, inside the protective cardboard "case" that these are packaged in I also obtained the case for this thing, and put the guard and all the stuff in the "compartment" by the neck area. crust Posted August 15, 2014 Share Posted August 15, 2014 My brandy new Epi ES339 P90 Pro. I ordered it from Musician's Friend. Here is my review. The outward appearance is flat out beautiful. The Pelham Blue actually has a silver sparkle to it that you cannot see in the pictures. The fit and finish is good, but not great. It's definitely well worth it for the price, but not as good as a Gibson obviously. The neck is thin and flat. Reminds me of my Lite Ash Tele neck. I love it. The P90's sound GREAT. The neck pickup booms and the bridge pickup has awesome twang. Overall, this guitar plays and sounds great. I feel like this might be the steal of the decade as far as guitars. Wanted a 50s vibe tone and to get better note definition on string 5 and 6 (was a bit muddy no matter what). I played one of these a few years ago and foolishly passed because I wanted the Rosewood. Next think I know, they're discontinued. Well, long story short, my new AJ500 is on the way. Woohoo! The LP is - how I only recently found out - one of the czech-made Bohemia Musico Epis (made in '96 if I read the S/N correctly), where I changed the pickups to Duesenberg Dominos (P90s). The Sheraton II is a 2012 MIK (Unsung). I dunno, I guess I'd have to play a few more of todays LPs to answer that. But I think todays overall parts quality is better and these chinese guitarmakers must have learned a lot in the past years, 'cos some of the new Epi Les Pauls I've seen in stores have the most beautiful looking sunburst I've ever seen on an Epiphone (Elitist or vintage ones excluded). Mine is a little lighter than most other LPs I've played, and I think it's not made of mahagony, although I can't really tell through the finish (and it's finished everywhere). Here we go: Yep, its a Czech LP. From what I understand, you cant tell the actual year from Czech serials. As far as the wood type is concerned, it is definitely some type of mahogany substitute. What exactly, its hard to say. The most common mahogany substitute is Luaun. The weight has more to do with the density of the wood they used. Epiphone hasnt used real mahogany on their guitars since the 1960's. There is a possibility that the neck is maple, but I cant tell from the pics. It is not uncommon to find a maple neck on an Epiphone Les Paul that is supposed to have mahogany. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

I call her Burla due to the walnut burl that I used replacing all of the plastic stuff like pick guard, pickup surrounds, control cover and truss rod cover . Burla started life as an Epiphone G400 with a worn brown finish. I used Flitz polish to bring a shine to her. I work for a jewelry manufacturer so I was able to gold plate much of the hardware myself. Here is a list of mods I have done.
