  1. Update on Epi ES-LP

    04 July 2017 - 05:06 AM

    Hello All.

I thought, I share my experiences with the Epiphone ES-LP I bought in April.

One of the Alpha volume pots died within a month of usage. I decided to replace the entire harness with high-quality components. I bought a Jimmy Page-style harness from Sigler Music.

The pots are 500K Bourns push/pull units. Orange Drop caps and vintage style wax-coated wires. Great stuff. The intallation was a nightmare. Could have been easier with short-shaft pots, though.

Sounds great, especially both pickups split and out-of-phase.

    Best wishes... Bence
  2. Crafting stone picks

    24 April 2017 - 07:15 AM

I have been doing some crazy stuff, that turned out to be very good.

I have done some picks from river gravel before and liked the tone I was getting with them. I tried some different shapes, and wanted to craft one that is really perfect. My favorite regular plastic picks are the Dunlop Big Stubbys. They fit me perfectly. So, I made one from stone.

    Here it is...

First, I looked for thinnest gravel that was about the size of the pick I wanted to copy. Also, it is important to work with a solid one without cracks, and with very uniform grain.

The very first step is to create on flat surface for reference.

This has been done using diamond files, and very coarse sanding paper (40-60 grit) attached on a true surface.

  3. First setup of the Epiphone LP ES

    27 March 2017 - 03:13 AM

    Hello.

I have done the first setup on my new Epiphone Les Paul ES on the weekend.

Nothing special, just the usual tweaking: setting the neck relief, action, pickups' heights, and cleaning/polishing.

The neck was so straight, that when I removed the strings it went into slight backbow. A quarter turn of the dual action truss rod nut, made it perfectly straight (0.010" relief at 9th fret when stringed up and tuned to standard tuning). It is the best neck, from this aspect I have ever had on a guitar.

Of course, I got the fretboard clean with a paper tissue dampened into soapy water, and then applied two coats of cold-pressed linseed oil. Polished it well in.

Then, I used Virtuoso Cleaner on it, and polished it up with Virtuoso Polish.

    Hello.

My first ever semi-hollow just arrived from Thomann Germany.

Wanted to be safe and not to invest big money into something I am unfamiliar with, so I went with an Epiphone Les Paul ES. Gibsons of this kind are far beyond my budget.

  5. Dechroming metal parts

    08 March 2017 - 07:14 AM

    Hello All.

I found this out by accident.

If You put a chrome-plated part into vinegar, and pour sodium bicarbonate on it, it will remove chrome without trace. You might have to repeat the process several times, as the harsh part of the reaction lasts a few seconds only.

    Bence.
