Has anyone tried different P90s on their Peerless Sorrento ? Such as Lollar, Duncan, Vintage Vibe ? Wondering how the Peerless P90s compare.

That orange is nice. It suits the guitar. I've always liked that color.

Epiphone Zephyr Regent - Change pickup to 57 Classic?
vaxxine replied to BHjazzman's topic in Epiphone Electrics
Going back to my previous post in this thread about my experience with replacing the cheap stock Samick pickup in my HJ650, with a '57 Classic and hearing very little difference, here a some clips of a stock Samick HJ-650 to demonstrate my point. Two of them are professional recordings from a dutch professional guitarist; the other one is from a hobby player (it isn't me). The point here is not the Samick guitar, but the lesson I got about assuming that a cheap asian pickup is automatically inferior. What you hear in these clips is exactly what mine sounded like in stock form. I gained essentially nothing by upgrading to the Classic '57. -

Glad to hear about the happy outcome, Southrun. That SD SH59 is also a good choice as you found out. I have one of those but have never had it in the ZR; it's currently in a Telecaster and I would say that sound-wise, it's right in the family of the '57 Classic and similar pickups. The ZR is a neat guitar. It looks, plays and sounds like a guitar costing a lot more than it does. -

Epiphone Zephyr Regent - Change pickup to 57 Classic?

Well then pick or suggest what you want. I don't care what you use. I say the 57 Classic is the easiest because it's so widely used by so many for the 'jazz guitar sound'. Just saves a lot expensive experimentation for someone looking for a quick answer. But there's lots of other pickups that will do the same thing. As far as I'm concerned, the amp and it's settings and the speaker have more to do with the tone than the pickup does. The emphasis on pickup choice is overblown in my opinion. I replaced the stock pickup in my Samick HJ-650 with a '57 Classic. What I heard in the end was the cheap stock Samick pickup was already about 95% of the way there to the sound of '57 Classic. *Some* difference, yes. But not a ton of difference. -

I currently have a Dimarzio DP103 (PAF) in mine but I've also had a 57 Classic in it. They all sound good, including the stock pickup. The easiest choice is the 57 Classic; you can't go wrong it. -
Know anything about this Samick Les Paul Custom?

Your headstock logo is the same as the logo on my 1992 Samick HJ-650 (L5 copy). So your's is from around that era. It seems they changed their logo design every few years. You've probably got a pretty decent guitar there. -

Hi BH ( and Sambooka too - fellow Canadian I believe). Regarding the Byrdland : yes, I definitely like the thinner body. Despite being a 17" guitar, the thinner body is much more comfortable for me. It's a very nice guitar. And I like the 23.5" scale too. Being a smaller guy, the guitar is a pretty good fit. As much as I love traditional deep bodied archtops, I find that as I get older that my preference is for shallower bodies. My Zephyr Regent also produces a dark smokey sound like yours. I've been running 12-52 on it but just yesterday I put a set of TI 12-50 on it; quite a difference, and nice too. Owning the ZR has prevented me from going out and spending 4 - 6 times as much as I paid for the ZR on a ES165 or ES175. The ZR is really well built and it has 'the look' and the sound and the feel; it just kills the need to 'upgrade'. And I owned a 70's ES-175 for many years ( a long time ago) so it's not like I don't know the difference. And there is a difference between the ZR and the more expensive Gibson's but it's not a low quality vs high quality difference; they're similar quality but different in sound and perhaps feel. My ZR has an R98xxxxx serial number so it must have been in the first production run from Peerless if Epi first offered these in 1999. And to confirm, the scale length on mine IS 24.75", not 25.5" like the website said for 10 years. The Natural finish ZR's clearly had a mahogany neck; I can't see the neck wood though the black finish on mine so I'm not sure if it's mahogany or maple. -

Anything new in the world of Zephyr Regents ? I'm always interested since I've owned one for several years (made in 1998 ) but there seems to be little talk about them since they were discontinued.
