  1. Read your post about the J15 intonation thing. When I read the part about removing the under saddle transducer a light went off. I removed mine tonight and guitar intonation is exponentially better. Thanks.

  2. I've recently been using D'Addario 85/15 light medium strings on my J15. I really like the extra bottom end and the feel that comes with the slightly heavier 4th, 5th and 6th strings. I may at some point experiment with using a 13 and 17 with this set. Next up though I intend to try Rotosound Tru Bronze which have the similar gauages but in my long time favourite 80/20 material. I'd say these are well worth a try if you are looking for more bottom end and than 12-53 give and like to dig in without moving to true mediums.
  3. I've now had the D'Addario Nickel Bronze strings on my J15 for over two months, playing two to three hours a day. They are a little duller and a little harder to keep in tune than they were but still sound and feel pretty good. I feel no need to replace them yet. I sometimes give them a quick wipe down after playing but not always. I've never had a set of uncoated strings last this long.
  4. I've had them on just over a week now. They are quite dark sounding and still devoid of overtones. As much as I like them, I find myself missing the sparkle and the feel of Elixirs sometimes. The nickel bronze will be staying on for a while yet though and I would certainly give them another go.
  5. I put on a set of the new D'Addario Nickel Bronze 12-53 last night. I was expecting them to be a sort of silvery-gold colour but they are silver like the other nickel strings I've used in the past (John Pearse). First impressions are positive. In particular the low end seems to be devoid of overtones, and when I mute the bottom strings with my right hand, they gave a very pleasant dry thump that suits the way I play. A quite dead sound but in a good way. I guess it will take a few days for them to settle in so I'll report back when that has happened.
  6. Thank you! I have had a problem with my J-15 that is now solved (the under saddle transducer ribbon was causing poor intonation and in my opinion was a tone and volume killer). I'm enjoying it very much again now I've removed that ribbon.
  7. I currently have the Gibson 80/20s that came in the case on my J-15. I find them fairly..average really. Next to try are D'Addario 85/15s which also have a slightly heavier bottom than the standard D'Addario lights. I have a Colosi bone saddle which I'm fitting this week but I'm keeping the stock bridge pins as 1) I couldn't figure out which size to order from Colosi and 2) I like like the plain look of them. Has anyone had a chance to test the new D'Addario Nickel Bronze sets yet? They are quite expensive compared to the regular PB or 80/20, at least over here in the UK.
  8. I've hesitated to add my thoughts to this discussion although I've enjoyed hearing the contributions from all perspectives. Long and short of it is that I like my J-15 - a lot. First time I did a comparison, I liked the J-15 a lot more than either the J-29 or J-35 and thought it was up there with the J-45 I tried. Just my personal finding. Second time, I tried a different J-15 and found the same thing, so bought it. I had my heart set on a J-35 all along, so was pretty disappointed to find I preferred the J-15! I could have afforded any of those guitars but felt I had to go with the one that just felt right. I didn't try out the AJ Maple Custom the shop had in case I liked that one too much and ended up blowing my savings. The J-15 isn't perfect - it looks and sounds beautiful but there is an issue with the saddle (which I'm replacing soon). The tuners are functional and are the same as on my Taylor 12 string. They have never given me any problems. It suits me and the music I like to play and for the time being, I'm happy with it. If it falls to bits in the future, I'll have learned a lesson. In the meantime, I'll carry on enjoying my J-15.
  9. Hello! I'm Stephen, from Liverpool,UK. I've been reading the forum for several months and bought my Gibson J-15 just under two weeks ago. My first Gibson, something I've wanted for a long time, and certainly not my last. I love playing country blues and related music, which I guess is the reason I gravitated towards Gibson slope-shoulders. I've found lots of good information here while wondering which Gibson to buy, and I'm looking forward to being involved in discussions.
