Gibson Guitar Give Away Contests

Namvet

Recommended Posts

Why does Gibson require one to enter their geet giveaways on either fACEBOOK OR TWITTER? Personally I feel this is discriminatory for those of us who don't use nor want to use these social apps. I suggest a direct entry link be posted on the contest window (as it used to be)on the Gibson home page for us non-social apps folks. I don't want to establish an account on any social app just to have a chance to win a geet or gear. OK, I've vented.....Thoughts?

They don't give guitars just to give them away, they do it for promotion.

In this case they are looking for promotion, advertising and following on Facebook/Twitter.

they do not have to accomodate anybody really. I do not see how it is discrimination. You are not required to enter in a contest.

Facebook apps/giveaways allow others access to your posts, seeing what you type, like, etc. called 'mining' your computer. so by not accepting or entering the contests you are actually saving your private information from bots, spam, and yes... free gibson giveaways.

no big loss.

Yeah, the purpose of the facebookie type "contests" is a variation on marketing efforts.

I don't do 'em myself because I don't care to get slammed by even more sorts of spam...

But Namvet - you and I are old guys (I'm assuming you are a Nam vet), so we're probably less likely to want to play that sort of game. OTOH, the game is one of market segment. Dunno about you, but I'm not that likely to be buying guitars in 20 years, assuming I'm even around any more then. A 20-50-year old is more likely to be in a pickin' career that I am.

The only reason facebook exists is to collect your information and sell it to marketers. If you are on Facebook, they have a huge file on you. This allows marketers to send you ads depending on what they think you like and therefore will buy. When Gibson hooked up with Facebook, they get access to your file and your friends, and that's when I quit entering Gibson guitar contests.

I am on facebook, only to see family pictures posted there. I didn't enter much of my personal information, and I don't post much.

This.

Also, to collect photos of your face for a universal "face recognition" database. Casinos have been doing it for almost two decades now. Overall those networks are sketchy. Too many people know too much about too many other people.

Avoid those systems at all cost.

You don't quite grasp how marketing works, do you?

I do understand marketing, I just don't like the method. Too much criminal activity is attributed to social networking because there are too many people out there who aren't smart enough to be careful with their personal info. As Milo stated, Don't do em.

As to your original topic, how in the world is it discriminatory? They are facebook/twitter specific promotions. That show Marketing works, they are specifically after marketing towards these users, if your not one of them, the promotion is not for you.

Even though I'm on Facebook,I do agree that Gibson should try to accomodate all their patrons, after all it's not just people on Twitter and Facebook who have bought Gibsons.A lot of people avoid Facebook and for good reason and they shouldn't be excluded because they don't subscribe to it.

There are many such things that go on with contests etc. these days.A lot of companies from soft drink makers to potato chip makers sponsor contests yet only make a website available for people to enter the contests-a large chunk of the population still doesn't have computers.Products are advertized on TV and only a web address is given for people who want to enter.I know that due to trade laws, taxes and import duties etc. that all contests can't be open to all countries, but I believe that to be completely fair every contest should be all inclusive,so everybody who could possibly eligable could avail of a chance to enter.

Gibson is a business, to survive they must make money. Part of their business is marketing to people who they identify as potential customers so they can grow their business. Part of that is identifying ways those potential customers may be reached. Social media is an avenue for them to reach people who may not be aware of their products and increase awareness of their brand. Simple as that.

They do not owe anyone a free guitar, and if they choose to offer promotions like free guitars through some specific avenues and not others, that is absolutely within their right, and is not in any way discriminatory or unfair to people who do not happen to be in their target demographic for that promotion. To suggest otherwise, or that they somehow owe it to us to make their promotions "fair" and all inclusive is totally ridiculous and just shows a severe lack of understanding of how business works. Really... come on.

Surfpup "gets it"....

To me, it sounds like sour grapes Nam. It's not hard to create a Hotmail address for FACEBOOKISSATAN@hotmail.com, create and link a FB account of the same name to that email, "like" Gibson and win your guitar. It's not rocket science and it surely increases your chances to win far more than internet whining.

For the record, FB rocks. I get to keep up with friends and family I hardly ever get to see.... like pics of Shred's beautiful baby girl. The price I pay for this is seeing ads on webpages that are actually germane to my shopping interests.

How sad? [confused]

Anytime someone has to "belong" to something in order to enter a contest, live in a certain neighborhood etc IMHO falls under the criteria as discriminatory. How would it feel to be denied buying a house in an area you want to live because of your race, religion, social status or nationality? Facebook is actually crap that was initially geared toward the younger generations but has since become a social albatross that has destroyed families, become a pedophile's dream hunting grounds and basically created a media of sterile interaction between humans; thus undermining physical and social interaction. Marketing can be accomplished without requiring membership to a media with such a negativity on human behavior as facebook.

I particularly don't care what Gibson does - it's their business. If they want to include me in their contests, that's OK if they don't it's their choice.

I'm careful about the info I put out on the 'net. And I know that there is a big file for sale about me too. But I will not do a facebook contest because I read the rules, and they seem to tell me that not only will they be using my information, but that I am granting them access to my facebook friend's information - and that is something I am not willing to do. They can post their information wherever they want, without their permission, I am not going to give anyone their information.

I'm on FB mainly for family pictures - and I find it a big waste of time - but that's just for me - others love it and that's fine. We all pick our place to waste time and for me it's music sites.

I limit the amount of information I give them (no high school, college, address, etc.) and I know that what they get from me can be used to send me spam. I also know that google probably does the same thing so I don't register and I clear my cookies and LSO's many times per day.

I remember the old days, before the Internet went corporate (anybody remember usenet/newsgroups?), and I know that non-commercial Internet will never return. With corporate Internet we gained a lot of things, and lost a few others. And I know there is a big file on me for sale to marketers, but I don't believe I have the right to voluntarily give information about my family and friends to the dossier compilers.

And that's the only thing I object to with FaceBook contests.

Facebook has proven to be a very useful avenue of communication for me and has allowed me to connect to long lost friends and kin that I never knew I had from as far away as Australia,Denmark,England,The USA and many other places on the globe.I have also connected with guitarists and guitar collectors from all over the world and even have had conversations with favourite entertainers from the 60s and 70s.Facebook can be a great asset to a lot of people, even though some find it a PITA.

A musician without a Facebook account is like an office without a phone.

Used to be, "Do you have a press package or CD I could listen to?" Now it's, "Do you have a Facebook page with some videos on it."

I use it for marketing my band, it's only fair that I let myself be marketed to. Besides, Spam is so easy it contain nowadays that I get more Junk Mail at the Post Office than I do in my Email. Just a right click away from the Spam folder.

It's a free social network in a capitalist economy, someone's gotta foot the bill.

Having said that, I find Facebook to be great to keep in touch with my family so far away, I have reconnected with College friends and a lot of other great uses.

I really do not get the discrimination comment though, there are folks that do not use internet or have a computer, would it be discrimination to have online contests even if it was directly in Gibson's website?

All contests have rules, if you do not qualify you cannot enter or win, is it discrimination? like if you are under age?

Gibson gave away a couple guitars at Summer Jam last year but you had to be there to win even if you entered, we had to come home early because my wife was pregnant at the time, if I had won would that been discrimination?
