LP Classic vs Standard

KVL

Recommended Posts

I'm looking to get out of my PRS SE Custom 24 for a Les Paul. The PRS is great and all, but I'm gassing for an LP. I put an ad on Craigslist to swap and I got some hits. One is a MIK Classic Quilt top and the other is a MIC Standard.

I know there's a gazillion "what's the difference" threads, but there's a gazillion LP sum models with virtually miniscule differences, and Just looking at pics is a nightmare to figure out with all the sub-models.

From what I gather on the Unofficial wiki page...

Standard

Alnico Classic humbuckers

Mahogany body with carved maple top

Single-ply body & neck binding

Set mahogany neck with SlimTaper profile

Rosewood fingerboard with trapezoid inlays

12" fingerboard radius

22 mediun-jumbo frets

LockTone Tune-O-Matic bridge with stopbar tailpiece

1-ply elevated cream pickguard

Chrome or nickel hardware

14:1 ratio Grover die-cast tuners

Amber bell knobs

2 Vol. 2 Tone controls

3-way selector switch

24.75" scale

1.68" nut width

Classic Quilt Top

Open coil Alnico Classic & Alnico Hot Humbucker pickups

Mahogany/alder body with flame maple veneer

Chrome or black hardware

Set mahogany neck profile?

Rosewood fingerboard with trapezoid inlays

Body & neck binding

Tune-o-matic bridge with stopbar tailpiece

Amber bell knobs

2 Vol. 2 Tone controls

3-way selector switch

24.75" scale

1.68" nut width

So would it be safe to assume the difference is the actual pick ups, and the mahogany vs. mahogany/alder body? I dont know about the neck profile. Are they the same?

Can I assume the Standard is the "better" model being the all mahogany body?

These are them...

I love the look of the quilt top, but the sunburst is so classicc looking and reminiscent of my favorite players, like Warren Haynes, Slash, Ace Frehley, Page, etc. Obviously I have to play them.

If they are of equal quality, then I'll go with the quilt, although the burst comes with a hard case. Hmmm....

About the only difference is that the pups are not covered on the quilt. It also looks like the quilt does not come with a pick guard.

They are basically the same guitar though.

I like the quilt and flame tops myself. However, I also like a pick guard, and the look of covered HBs.

I'd get a standard flame top. :)

Thanks Brad, yeah, the pick guard being the obvious difference, I was unsure about differences in wood and pups in particular.

I contacted the seller of the quilt and he says he seems pretty cool, so it looks like I'm gonna be swapping the PRS SE for the Les Paul Classic Quilt Top! Woot!
