  1. I have a pickup marked ACPPNHZCB-4 on the back. I assume it's an Alnico Classic-type pickup, but none of the references I've found online include the "Z" in the marking. Can anyon confirm what kind of pickup this is and which magnet is in it (A2, A5, et al)? FYI, I'm thinking of installing it in a Tele build I have (swamp ash body) to smooth out the tone. It currently has a SD JB installled, but it's a little too shrill/bright for what I need. Thanks all...
  2. That's really interesting. Other than the serial number and indentation on back of the headstock, I can't find anything the least bit substandard or even unusual about this guitar. Looks like I got a pretty good deal after all. What about those pickups? Got any suggestions there?
  3. Hi. I recently picked up this Epiphone Goth G-400, but it's a mystery. If you look at the photo, the actual serial number was covered up with a sticker showing another number. I removed the sticker and moved it down so you can see both the sticker and the serial number underneath. In addition, the last digits of the serial number have been scratched out. Finally, there's an odd indentation above ther serial number that I don't recall seeing on other models of this guitar. Everything else looks legit, including "Epiphone" stamped on the back of the pickups and the three-way switch. So...anyone have any ideas for an explanation? Counterfeit? Replacement neck? I bought this pretty cheaply to mod and resell, but I don't want to pass along a guitar of questionable origin. Thanks in advance. And a follow-up question, assuming it's legit...how are the pickups in these? I was gonna swap them out for some Korean made Guitar Madness or Dragonfire pickups that I use a lot, since I thought these were Epi's lower-end ceramics. Turns out they're Alnico V humbuckers, but I can't find any info about them.
  4. Hi! So I just finished rehabbing this 1993 Epiphone T-310, the "Tele-phone" (LOL) and am about to list her for sale, but I'm seeing pricing all over the map for these. On Reverb they seem to vary wildly -- two currently for sale, one for $600 and one for $350. Locally I saw one for sale for $325. All of those figures seem high to me. I've also seen chatter on boards with people picking them up for under $150.It turned out great. it's a '93, with Grover tuners. I replaced the bridge assembly, pots, switch, nut and pickguard, cleaned it up, gave it a good setup. Pickups are Artec Giovanni Noiseless Alnico 5s, and they sound great. You can't see it in this pic, but it has the hockey stick headstock. It's such an unusual axe, it's hard to spot a trend. What's a fair price?
  5. Update - I've since learned that the stock pickups are Alnico V humbuckers, but all the reviews I read say they don't clean up well and in combo with the guitar only really work for metal and hi-gain tones. Is that your experience? If I don't need to swap out pickups to make it versatile, I'd rather not. Then again, I'd rather not reassemble the guitar and string it just to find that the pickups won't work for me, then tear it open again. Thanks for any insight you can share.
  6. Hi. I just picked up a disassembled 2004 Epi Goth SG -- haven't started putting it back together yet. My impression of Epiphone stock pickups has always been that they were a bit dark and muddy, without a lot of character, so I thought I'd go ahead and plan on swapping them out, maybe for a set of Dragonfires or GFSs. Anyone have thoughts on the PUs that come standard in the Goth SGs, or what might make a good replacement? I'll probably mod and resell it, so I'd like to make it a versatile guitar, and not just a hi-gain screamer (which the Goth models seem to me aimed at). Appreciate any feedback before I start the project... Cheers, J.C.
