Funny to hear you say this. When my daughter was 15 she too lusted after the gibson hummingbird. For her 16th birthday I bought her a 2005 Hummingbird standard. It was and is a beautiful looking and sounding guitar. It has a honey burst finish. She treasures that guitar, and will treasure it long after I’m gone. I don’t think you will lament buying it for her. I certainly have no regrets.

When I bought a J45 about 14 years ago, I choose between a standard with a spruce top and one upgraded with an adi top. Between those 2 guitars, the adi sounded significantly better, but I could only get them to significantly reduce the price on the standard with spruce. The original price difference was about $700 and discounted about $1,000 more for the adi. I bought the spruce guitar. Since then, the spruce guitar has really come into its own, so there might not be that much difference in the long run. But for $300 More, I would probably go with the adi.

Im assuming it’s a “flubber” pickguard. A previous post discussed how to fix this permanently without buying a new Pickguard. I can’t vouch for it but it’s worth a shot.

Can’t beat a mahogany Gibson 12, and there is no guitar more beautiful than a hummingbird. What a great combo. Prayers for your dad.

Aimee Mann has played J45s pretty much exclusively since around 2000. She had previously played an old J160 that the airlines wrecked.

For underrated I would mention both Larrivee and Guild. It’s easy to find examples of both brands that are as good or better than than more highly rated and much more expensive brands. Used examples just don’t hold their value, but those are some fabulous guitars.

The two I’m curious about are the J55 and the 1934 original jumbo. The demo videos for both sound fabulous. I’d love to play one or both.
