I initially tuned down to figure out Jason Isbell's "If we were vampires" which is tuned down to D. My voice is lower so I went all the way down to C# and have really liked it. You can still capo it to get to standard, but it's nice to have that option to go lower if needed (and if you're old smoker's voice needs it). I do this on a non-Gibson parlor guitar and it sounds great. Haven't moved up to thicker strings, but I admit the rattle adds a certain something. Will try mediums once I do change strings to see what I think.

Thanks, Jinder. Would definitely use a Sunrise but they're a bit cost prohibitive. I've got a Black Angel I'm about to put in the J-45, but I'm thinking the K&K for a parlor guitar I use that has a smaller soundhole.

Anyone used one of these before? Ugly as it can be (even for a soundhole pickup) but it seems a lot of folks really like it.

Thanks, Dave!

Do you have a year on this? Is it brand new or made in the past.
I've been thinking about this guitar all day!

That is a fantastic looking guitar! Hope you post some clips soon.

Love Elvis Costello. I feel like every picture I've seen of him playing acoustic in the past 10 years has been a J-45, though this guitar is pretty sweet looking.

That's a beaut! I've got a 12 fret parlor guitar (all solid Recording King) that I just love. Would love to have a 12 fret J-45 or something like this!

Love my J-45 but when Gibson was slow with a replacement for a defect I told them I'd have taken a J-50. How new is it? It hought Gibson had stopped making those a year ago or so.

Happy new year, all! I had many a bourbon, many a cigarette, and listened to great music with the familial crew (each person picking a song around in a circle).

Merry Christmas, all!

I get the beater argument, but (and I started this thread) I didn't buy a Gibson to just hang on the wall. I bought it to play. Does that mean it's wearing through the finish where I play? Yup. Does it mean it's got a pretty good gash where a harmonica landed corner down on it? Yup. Does it mean that the frets are wearing from play. Yup. Yup. Yup. But that's what it's for.
When the harmonica hit it I was playing with a buddy, and I was bummed. He said I didn't seem like the kind of guy who cared about a dent given that it's best sounding acoustic he's ever heard. I realized I don't, and it is a tremendous sounding guitar, so it's what's next to me at all times.

Good point, Dave, especially if you're plugging in. A fancy guitar is lost with pickups, though some pickups are certainly better than others.

Haha not surprising neither of these is on our bucket lists. I just thought it was an interesting comparison of two mid-range takes on a J-45. Obviously an apples to oranges comparison, but I think of my younger self who couldn't afford an actual J-45.
-
Obviously neither sound like a Gibson J-45 Standard or 1950s, but this is kind of interesting.

For my #1 guitar, a 50s J-45, I really like the Sunbeam PBs. Tried a number of them but on the recommendation of folks here tried the Sunbeams and am totally sold on the sound.

I may go with 13s (or even the 12.5s I have) next time. I put a set of Martin Retros on it and am really liking it so far. I didn't like them on my 50s J-45 when I tried them, hence why they were sitting around, but they seem to work really well with this parlor guitar in that tuning.
Just so you know, it's an all solid Recording King parlor, and it's a fantastic guitar. You're not paying for the fine touches, but it's a great sounding and playing guitar. One of the best out of the box setups I've ever seen. I'd really wanted an L00 but didn't have the funds, and am really happy with it. It's not my #1 (which is the J-45) but it's a blast to play.

Not playing along with anything, but there's a couple of cover tunes that are in D tuning but my voice is just a bit lower so it's more comfortable to sing in C# (one is Jason Isbell's "If we were vampires." The guitar sounds really good with the 12s on them in C# so maybe I'll just stick with a new set of those. I just had a set of 12.5s I'd gotten about a year ago that I thought might be worth a shot--or they can just sit around for another year!
-
Oooh, I hadn't even thought of the nut slots/pin holes. I've got a set of 12.5-55 I was thinking of trying so maybe that would offer just enough extra punch without causing too many problems?

Thanks, jedzep--was worried I'd lose clarity/attack with 12s that loose!

Hey folks,
I've got a couple of songs that I'm liking in C# tuning but it's time to change the strings. I normally use 12-54s but have seen some who say to increase string guage when detuning. Anyone have experience with this or string guage suggestions?
Technically I'm not tuning a Gibson down but an all solid parlor guitar, so sorry!
No 'Custom Shop Historic' L-00 or no 'Faded Series' L-00?

yup, would love to see a faded L-00. Don't need it, but would be very tempted.
