  1. Another thing to try..... this worked for me a few weeks back.

Turn the computer off a few hours before you go to bed. The light from the monitor goes directly into your eyes and tells your brain it's daylight. It's the same principle as those SAD lights, which trigger circadian rhythms. Before you go to bed keep the house darker (no bright lights) and stay away from the computer. It worked for me. And I also have a piece of paper beside the bed and will write things down if I find they're sticking to my mind and preventing sleep.

  2. Excellent resources in this thread Stephen [thumbup]

I too am a believer that these modifications will change your tone, sometimes for the better, sometimes for the worse. For example, I put a bone saddle on the Epi and it's just too much sound for that little guy. The Tusq saddle is going back on and if the bone saddle fits the Seagull I might try that. Both Gibsons have bone saddles and pins now and I wouldn't have it any other way.

  3. I haven't heard that one but the flyer that came with my old Seagull guitar actually says to place the guitar in front of a stereo speaker daily to vibrate the wood and improve the sound of the guitar. I think someone actually did an experiment on this but I don't remember what the results were? It seems to me someone posted something about it on the AGF quite awhile back.

  4. Karen

Breaking or spraining a finger or wrist has always been my worst nightmare. Well 13 months ago I took a spill and broke my left wrist. It took almost 6 months before I could play reasonably and it's still not quite right. When in my cast I even attempt slided guitar. So I FEEL your frustration. I'd get it checked out...if your pinky still isn't right. They can recommend various exercises to help improve your range of motion. Then again the healing process can take some time..but for peace of mind see a doctor. Ya gotta find a more gentle kinder sport....yoga is just way brutal! Kazz

OMG, Kazz, that's awful! Sorry to hear about your spill. :-( I don't think my wrist is broken but the finger is definitely not working right. I will make an appointment with the doc if it doesn't improve. It's so embarrassing to admit that I injured myself.......... fighting bears? No. Falling off a bike? No. Whitewater rafting? No. I overdid my 'kneeling cat asana' in yoga class! For shame!

  5. Hot? Who says it's 'sprained'? the Yoga instructor? Remember these people are not physicians.

If it's hot to the touch' date=' I'd show it to a bonafide doctor, just to be sure it isn't broken or you don't have some severe vascular damage. If it's broken and it doesn' heal right, playing guit tar may not be possible a year from now.

    Go see the doc.[/quote']

I don't think it's broken, Tommy because it's already doing better. Baby finger is still ailing tho'. I'm worried my callouses will disappear because I'm taking a break from playing!

  6. Sorry to hear of your injury GG!! Ibuprofen and Ice! "Dont" use it! Rest it. suburude

Yup, that Ibuprofen made a big difference. That and the frozen peas. It's hard to see three guitar cases sitting against the wall and not open one of them but I'm just going to wait it out. Last night was really hard because I had to check the humidifiers in the cases...... then close the cases up again. That was rough! LOL

  7. So how's the wrist feelin' today Karen? Better I hope.

It IS better, Gary! My baby finger still isn't working properly but I can actually move the wrist. I'll be playing guitar by the weekend, I think. Thanks for asking :-)

  8. nothing wrong with your neighbours thinking your weird. I've got a set of really noisy ones so I'm always doing things to make them wonder (they are always looking out from behind their curtains). I dragged my lawnmower out in January and started it up so they could see. I also stuck a lawn chair in the front lawn and sat with a beer when it was -45 out..

LOL That's the spirit! We're not going to let a little snow throw a damper on our fun LOL

So what Dean Martin did you play for her?

I tried to fake my way through That's Amore!

  9.

well it would give the neighbours something to talk about.....[-o</

The neighbours already think I'm weird. I sit on my front porch and sing/play songs to the two pigeons (Peggy and Peter) that live in my eavestrough. My neighbour on the left of me, she's a 92 year old Italian woman, came over one day and asked me to play her some Dean Martin.

  10. Keep in mind that all pain relievers do is to mask pain. The healing takes some time (and pain is telling you to lay off until you have a chance to heal). you seem to be young so you ought to expect fast recovery. Get the wrist into s good position for healing and let it heal. When you are better' date=' you will need to do exercises to recovery strength and flexibility (especially the wrist). THEN you can use magnets, pills and acupuncture but be cautious about all three. Too many pills can do liver things, and too fast can set you back in terms or re-injury. Get some advise on long-term recurring pain or later onset pain (such as arthritis) and do what's best for NOW and long term. Lots of guitar players my age wish they had done something earlier. [/quote']

Gitfidl, I'm not young, I'm just immature LOL Thank you for the advice. I'm glad to hear you're still playing!

  11. I tried to play a simple little G,D, and C song (What A Crying Shame - Mavericks) this afternoon, and couldn't get through it without serious pain. Looks like I'm on the sidelines for awhile. If we had a crying smiley, this is where I would put it.

  12. Terry, I'll send you out some more syrup....... just as soon as I can move again without every fiber of my being screaming out in pain. Man, that yoga stuff is a killer! I thought it was supposed to relax a person? I guess I shouldn't have done 3 hours of it. =D>

The swelling has gone down in the wrist, thanks to the frozen peas. I should have bought a bag of peas that's about 5 foot 4 inches long.

Thank you EVERONE for the advice and support. I appreciate it. Sympathy goes a long way when you're hurtin'!

Doug, the only Yogi I'm going to listen to from now on is the one with a companion named BooBoo ;-)

  13. It's a little swollen, but on one side only. It's really hard to tell how swollen it is tho' because my left wrist is typically thicker than my right anyway, probably because I play guitar and it's stronger. I've got a bag of peas on it right now (brrrrrr!). I'm so disappointed, especially because I had found a few new songs I wanted tackle this weekend.

I'm finding age is making injuries easier to come by and slower to go away. Ibuprophen has replaced recreational medication in my life.

Rosewoody, I can relate! I had a frozen shoulder last year and it took months to improve. Again, it was my left shoulder. And the irony was I injured it trying to warm up my arm to play guitar. It was in the winter time and my hands were really cold (poor circulation, likely from sitting around and playing guitar haha). So I found this *exercise* on the 'net that said just spin your arm around in wide circles, like a pitcher winding up for a fast ball. Well, DON'T EVER DO THAT. It doesn't work.

  14. I had to spend my days off at a Social Work Conference this weekend (for my licence) and we ended the day doing yoga, supposedly to de-stress. I sprained my wrist! I've never sprained my wrist before so I'm not even sure that's what it is, but I can't turn it, it's really hot to touch and it hurts. Does that sound like a sprain? And, if so, how long before I can play guitar again? It's my left hand, wouldn't you know it. I was sooo looking forward to playing guitar tomorrow on my ONE day off.

  15. Dave, my experience was that I could not find a 5/16 narrow enough to fit into the headstock. I tried Sears, Canadian Tire, Home Depot, etc. but couldn't find one. I kept buying them and having to return them. I ended up getting one through Gibson (thank you Bill)
