  1. Hey - just saw this looking for other VJ info but if you're still on the fence Baby Will is an awesome project and great for a beginner. The PCB is sturdy as heck and the circuit is amazing. You may want to head over to 18watt.com and get signed up as there is probably more help available over there than around here these days!
  2. Actually ended up getting a great deal on a Vox/Wharfedale jefrs - and I have to say I find it a highly underrated speaker in comparison to the stuff I've read about them... I was soundly broken when I got it but so far it seems better suited for my style than the V-30 I've been using.....
  3. Someday soon Twang - I think I've got maybe one more paint by number build and a bit more reading to do before I take the leap into PTP... not that it's killing any of the joy I felt when I heard Baby Will for the first time - gotta get this thing out and about but the old F-30 might be up Craiglist soon as happy as I am with it so far : ) You know while I'm at it I'd really like to thank the bunch of you here again for the help on the several builds - I may not be posting often but I've gotten so much mileage out of the builds I've done and there's nothing quite like bringing your own build to a jam and blowing away your boutique amp buying buddies (not that I wouldn't if I could ; ) with something you've built yourself!
  4. The board that I got for the Baby Will is really built like a tank - a fine piece of workmanship and design - basically idiot proof and that's part of what makes it a great first project graduating from the EVJr's - and it drops right into the EVJr chassis with just a few tweaks : )
  5. I just gotta bump this thread up having finished my Baby Will (after 3 EV Jr mods) and all I can say is do it now! If you've already done tweaks you love on 1 of them just be sure you got your safety thing together (google or talk to an amp tech until your clear on how to drain your filter caps and take readings safely) and then convert that EVJr into a Baby Will!! It is a really great sounding amp - lots of sparkle and plenty of girth - enough that my P-bass sounded good through it too!!!
  6. Wow Twang - not only did I get the darn thing working but I immediately took it to rehearsal for the guitarist to check out, (sounded as good as his Orange combo : ) but then just for the heck of it hooked it up to the 2x15 I was playing bass through and did 3 hours on bass with it cause it sounded great with the P-bass too.. what an amp!!!
  7. Hey'all, Was working on my Bab Will last night and got things up and running to check voltages w/o tubes and I'm not getting and current from the orange PT leads - and no tube glow - is this a pretty safe assumption that the PT might have taken a hit when drilling the extra holes in the chassis and gone south on me? Any tips on testing this assumption or am I right that no tube glow means the juice isn't there? And then I guess the next question might be where I could order a cheap replacemenet... doh.. Thanks!
  8. Hmm - seemed like the AC50's speaker broke up pretty late... I nearly did give the Lucky Lady away but had started another EVJr and decided to keep it around - have grown to like it a bit more but it's never been pushed much. So it sounds like greenback is not the answer for that Voxy tone curve - anybody know an affordable replacement speaker that's give me a tone similar to the Vox/Wharfedale???
  9. Hey - just kinda felt like geeking here... After playing through an AC50 on a backline that had Vox/Wharfedale speakers in it that I loved the curve on.. got me to wondering if the Luck Luck I replaced immediately with my celestion would be any closer to that - also wondering if it's a correct assumption it's the greenback style speaker that I'd be looking for as a replacement if the Lady Luck is no closer.. Thanks!
  10. Great, as always thanks Gil - can't wait to order those and get rolling on this!
  11. Howdy folks, Well I took Gils advice after my last post several months back to do a Baby Will. I kinda ordered a bit at a time and have all the parts together to start except for a few 2 month back orderded parts from mouser I'm really impatient to get and am looking for tips on where I can get these 1 watt 100k metal film resistors and a few others. Which sort of leads me to wanting a deeper understanding of some of these parts - like for instance can I just use a Carbon Film or Metal Oxide of the same value and how much it might effect the tone. I know I certainly felt like I could hear that little bit of Mojo when I put the Carbon comp in my EVJr's and so I don't want to mess with the intended tone too much inadvertantly. Any insight or tips on further online reading would be appreciated. Thanks!
  12. Hey Layboomo - I think that might have been the combination of which lights were on in the apt or something... as I mentioned the power can be funky in here but the amp seems to be fine after this last round... We'll see how it is tomorrow.... Happy New Years to ya'll while I'm at it - and thanks for all the good info I always get here!
  13. Posted over on sewatt and got R9 and R8 tweaked to 1K and 1.5K and have kept the girth and headroom of the amp but have that touch sensitivity I was after - and it sounds good with both the singles and humbers so I'm a happy camper - can't wait to turn it up tomorrow!
  14. Wow Gil - we've got some bad power at this old place we live in and had noticed right away that when I put the Mallory's in the little amp had a much quieter noise floor (almost silent) but I was missing a bit of the girth it had and threw the stock .022uf back in there.... and hello 60 cycle hum - maybe the new tranny will fill out the bottom and I can get that .01uf back in there...
  15. Great - that sounds like this is a good place to start... I've decided that what I'm going to do for now is get the Mallory's in there and then maybe sit tight on the rest till I can get the OT before doing further tweaking. That'll give me a chance to play with this one as it seems to sound so much better than the others did stock. Here's where ya'll could maybe help me before I get further into this though - what I like about this amp as it is right now is a kind of Petty/Campbell clean crunch on the edge of breaking with decent headroom with right up till about 12 o'clock - but what I'm missing is the smoother touch responsiveness of my marshall mod and then the break up as I get past 12 isn't as smooth. I'm wondering is this dif more because of the 1M in R1 and the R6/7 100K's changing the gain stages affecting that responsiveness, maybe the higher value C5 cap changing the character of the gain, or is it R8/9 that create that smoother break up.... Right now I'm inclined to think it's the C5 as that was the one thing in my Voxy Mod that I never got to and the break up on that amp while very fat and cool in it's own way was not as smooth as the Marshall mod.... but I don't know! : ) As always thanks for any and all input - it's fun to have the fever again!
  16. Thinking about that C3... hadn't stopped to play this amp yet till this morning and it sounds much better stock than the last ones I bought new - maybe the many hours of playing I know it has on it from the previous owner....much tighter bottom with both my HB's a single coils...might leave that stock for now and just do the 3.3uf...any reason not if it sounds good as is? And wondering since all I have for C5 is either the 47uf or 2200uf which is the better option - or if it's worth bothering with.....???
  17. So I got this V2 that I mentioned I'm gonna do the octal on but am gonna have to wait to get the new OT for it ($$$) - but as soon as I opened it to check the version I got the fever again bad - kept me up all night wondering what I still had around that I could get going with till I can get the rest of the parts. Here's what I've come up with kinda Frankenstein style but leaning towards Marshally selections and I'd love it if ya'll could offer insight or input on best usage of what I got if maybe I got he right thing in the wrong place or better use of a couple of options... R1 1M R2 10K R4 1K Carbon Comp in series stock 100K for Mojo R6 & R7 100K R8 1.5K R9 1K R10 & R14 Stock until I get the octal going R15 10K C1 .022uf Mallory C2 .01uf Mallory C3 Stock, 4.7uf or 10uf ??? C4 3.3uf C5 47uf/35v or 2200/50v in a big squeeze ???? C11 .1 Mallory Probably will put C3 on a switch and was wondering if the 3.3uf in C4 is best where it's at or possibly better on C3 using one of the other values in C4. Also wondering if there is any reason why I might want to switch C1 and C2 with the given values And I've got this big *ss 220 ohm (2-5 watt maybe) Carbon Comp that I got from who knows where that I'd like to use cause it looks so cool but from what I read I don't think there's any real good use for it here right? I've put question marks in the particular spots where I'd love some input but if somethings shouting out for a tweak with the materials at hand please post asap cause I'll be warming up the soldering iron as soon as the next pot of coffee is ready - thanks for any input !
  18. I'm going with the Weber OT since I have one.. Is that the WSE15 or 25 TWANG? I noticed the prices are a bit cheaper on the webers - anybody getting big tone dif between the Heyoer, Weber and Hammond? I feel like the Edcor I used on my 1st mod may have been a bit less improvement than is hyped for some of the others...
  19. Heyboer huh? Is this the OT of choice now over the Hammond? Well I just got the head and it's a V2 with 7.5 OT so that's gonna have to go - really psyched about the octal but need to do more research to figure out what I'm doing - meanwhile I'm already looking at what I have left form the last 2 mods....hmmm a mallory .022 and a mallory .01 for C1 and C2 maybe... a couple 4.7uf electrolytic caps for C3 n 4 and a mess of resistors - not quite the marshall thing I think I'm after but it might be enough get me into toneland while I start shopping for the tranny and stuff so why not have some fun : )
  20. Hey Wedge You can get all the info you need over at sewatt in the FAQ and Schematics section - the best thing is sign up over there and spend some time browsing. wattstubeaudio.com also has a EVJR parts list for the various mods and values at the bottom of the VJr page. Though I eventually went all the way on the Marshall mods imho changing C1 and C2 to the the Mallory caps was an easy and cheap mod that gave a lot more character to the amp as did lowering the values of C3 and C4 to tighten up the bottom...
  21. Hey Twang, That's real pretty amp there... Check in from time to time but haven't posted for a while as my Gil inspired Voxy/Marshall caps on a switch mod has been serving me well, several full on band shows, recording an album with some old college buddies and hanging well tonewise with the St. Louis and Victoria amps that the other cats at the dad jam... but fate has is bringing another stock head into my hot little hands any day now and I'm thinking of doing the octal EL34 and and wondering if you did this mod with a stock board or if you've attempted it - would love not to spend the add. money for a new pcb or turret but don't want to end up killing the guts I can use by trying something that's not gonna work out... any help, as always, would be appreciated.. Thanks!
  22. Hey Bilnd Jimi, w/o getting into extensive discussion of new old stock and detailed info that is available with a bit of research out there on the subject on the web imho the best and most reasonably priced EL84 you could go get for your EVjr is the JJ - it'll tighten up the bottom end and give a much more refined detailed focus to the chimey high end than similarly priced tubes like the Electro Harmonix, Sovtek or Mesa's stock tubes : )
  23. Hey M, Wow - thanks for the heads up about that cap - had an old Kustom that loved to shock the cr@p out of me at shows if I forgot to check which side the power switch needed to be on for the room - not fun.... So Unicord? Yeah - could be - had done just a quick search on it and didn't come up with too much - in fact trying to find the 6973, 7247 and the 6av6 at the same place online is proving to be a difficult order to fill.... So this whole sag thing - I've been reading up on it and trying to clarify it in my mind for reference - is this say the difference between maybe a Marshall tone and say a Fender Silver face kinda thing - Marshall being more saggy or am I off the mark there? Thanks again for the warning about the death cap!
  24. Hey Gang, I got this old tube amp from a friend who got it in a lot auction on ebay buying some other gear. The only identifying feature, because it's not in a cab of any sort is the little LA - 100R on the chassis which to the best of my research seems to be a Lafeyette possibly made by Univox in maybe the late 60's. The guts are real pretty and look hand wired (I'd post a pic but never figured out how to do that here). It's unclear if the thing works or not though because it needs tubes, but in doing the research (6973 power tube, 12ax7's, a6av6 and 7247) I came across these weber copper cap subs for the 6CA4 rectifier tube. I'm wondering if anyone could tell me what the difference might be to the tone and the amp assuming this thing fires up when I get the right stuff in there... Thanks in advance for any help! Z
  25. Hey Gang - I'm not familiar with the characteristics of the phillips tube for this but thought I'd pass along the Deal of the Day over at MoJo in case anyone was looking for a 5751...... got a sovtek in mine that I love and I hear that's not even a great version of this tube...... http://www.mojomusicalsupply.com/mojodeals.asp Happy Monday...
