  2. Thanks animalfarm! Yeah, definitely beats a watch! I am really liking the black finish as well. When you are talking about the string height, where is that measured? I plan on getting new strings. What brand would you recommend? I went to GC today and there are so many brands. The kid behind the counter recommended Ernie Ball Super Slinkies. Thanks, Jim
  3. Thanks for the responses everyone! Unfortunately I have not had too much time to play it yet, but hope tha changes soon! Jim
  4. I apologize for the delay. Here are pictures of the Epi Special II package I received as my 15 year anniversary at work. (Nothing too "Special!!" ) I didn't have time to take pictures of everything that came with it. A strap, amp, 3 picks and a pitch-pipe tuner. Jim
  5. Thanks RaSTuS and DennisMiller! I appreciate the support. Jim
  6. Hi all! Thanks for all the responses and advice. I had my surgery yesterday (Oct 29) as outpatient. My surgery was at 7:30 AM and I was back home by Noon! I am recovering well, but am sore and kind of "out of it" from the pain meds and general anesthesia. I have not even seen my guitar since I last posted. It's in a another level of my house and I have been having a hard time on the stairs with some balance issues. I have even stumbled down the stairs a couple of times, so now I will have to wait until I have healed somewhat. I have four small incisions on my stomach and one in my belly button of all places. Sorry this is so short, but I will post more soon and hopefully will have some pictures up soon as well. Thanks again, Jim
  7. Well, I finally got my guitar package! Mine came in all black (ebony). It came with a little 10-watt amp and a pitch pipe (?) for tuning. Sorry no pics yet. I’ve been a little under the weather. I am going to have my gall bladder out next Friday. Anyway, the guitar is pretty nice. I had been to GC to try some out while I was waiting for mine to arrive and I also tried some Epi LP Standards. The Special II feels almost toy-like compared to the real deal. But for free, I am not going to complain too much. I am now looking for suggestions for an amp. I had tried to get a used VOX Pathfinder 15 amp, but it was already sold when I went to look at it. I really don't want to buy one without trying it. I tried out a VOX AC4TV and a VOX VT30. I liked the AC4TV for it’s clear tones and the VT30 for its voicings and effects. They also had the Orange Crush 20-watt amps, but I didn't try that one out. I guess my price range is $150-250. I just need something to play at bedroom/practice room levels. Thanks, Jim
  8. I have been trying to get updates from the company that is responsible for the gifts and I finally received a response today. Their vendor (I have no idea who that is ) supposedly shipped my guitar today. I am glad I haven't been holding my breath all this time, but I am getting pretty impatient. As soon as it arrives, I will let you know. Jim
  9. That's funny animalfarm! Yeah, I feel like a kid at Christmas time. I definitely know how to post pics and will be sure to take them as soon as I get it. I haven't gotten a tracking number from the company yet, but will be bugging them soon if I don't get it from them. They estimated 12-14 days for delivery, but I hope it's quicker than that! At my age, I may not last that long!! Thanks again for all the support! It's a great feeling to be able to come here and talk about gear without the eyes glazing over or rolling. B) Jim
  10. I agree RTH!! Guitar is > Television. I talked to our HR guy that is kind of the man behind all of this, and he said that if I redeemed my certificate on-line (and I did), then more than likely, the guitar will be what they send. He said that it's more up to date than the printed catalog that I received. So here's hopin'!! Jim
  11. Okay, I pulled the trigger and ordered the guitar. I also had to select an alternate gift in case they don't have the guitar. I am going to be really ticked if they don't have it. Oh well, if they don't I will get a 19" LCD TV with a built-in DVD player. Not the greatest, but again it's free. I'll let you know which one shows up in 12-14 days! The suspense is already killing me. Jim
  12. Yeah, I don't think that there is any "danger" of me playing with a drummer anytime soon. Thanks again for all your advice. Jim
  13. Hey simba, no sweat. This (I think) is exactly what I need to get me started. What amp are you using? I guess I should have put that out there too. There is a used VOX Pathfinder at my local GC for $50. I have heard they aren't bad for a 15 watt solid state. Jim
  14. Thanks again, everyone! I should have mentioned that I am an old Noob, so this setup (well a different amp) should serve me well for the talent I have right now. Definitely would get something better if my talent suddenly takes off. For now though, I am seriously thinking of going with this. It's free, after all. I will definitely keep you all posted. Any suggestions on new tuners if I decide I need to change them out? By the way Cheeks, I like that carpeting. I had that same color in my basement family room until it got wet and ruined last year by a sewer back-up. Jim
