I had a look at the guitars in the link...really backs up what Musikron says about hi E-by-G that it is real heavy and well built (hopefully some nice wood in there and no particle board...recent thread...eek) the guy in the link says 9 1/2 lb Just nice to see some examples of these E-by-G's out there. 3. Jerrymac wrote: Jerry that is why I find this period so fascinating...also makes sense that if Ephphone was struggling at that time, that they may have added the "by Gibson" to pull on the Gibson brand to help sales... OK if I have got it right these 1986-88 guitars with the E-by-G are the earliest made in Korea.........The factory before was in Japan.....Matsumoku factory........ The font used by Matsumoku was similar to one used back to 1930's. Then in 1986 there is change in headstock by adding "by Gibson" to denote the break from Japan to Korea production...... Jerrymac wrote: NaturalScience2112's Sheraton has a very different font but it is the earliest 1986 we have record of on this forum....as you say Jerry it may be an early prototype...? 5. Sheila are they yours? Tomorrow, I pick up a 1987 like that but with plan black TRC. The whole purpose of this thread is to to concentrate on the 1986-88 Sherris and try and make sense of the serials and see if there are differences with later Sherri's weight etc.... this is the guitar I am buying tomorrow, if it plays OK...
  6. Yes Smips This will all come out as more people come forward with these guitars....That capital "E"....does look disturbing but let us get all the information on these guitars and compare features...None of the others have an a TRC like that. We are talking 1986 to 1988 when these were made, benefit of the doubt at the moment......lets get all the information in and then try and find out what went on in those days of production....
  7. Font on the serial sticker is the same, binding looks "stronger", font on the headstock inlay is definitely different......wonder if the earlier ones during the transition...........this is interesting.....hope we can find more early 1986 pre June models to compare.... ................................................................................................................................. 8. Hey great photos interesting is it possible to get a close up of the headstock back and front it seems your fonts are different might be because your serial is earliest we have recorded on this thread.......but we need a photo and a close up of the headstock, also the TRC is different too, in so much that it has the epiphone e, and it would be good to see that serial label...Looks like my two tobacco bursts. Another thing that interests me about these guitars is Musikron who handles a lot of guitars says is feels heavy...I am waiting to weigh my 1987 E-by-G next to my 1989 sherri to gauge the weight. Just interested if it is a wood selection thing....for better or worse.... We have 6,069 registered forum members and have had 1,106 visits to this thread. 9. Hi Musikron I read a lot of reviews and information before buying the box some get pissed off because it is not an attenuater but come on this is a low price attempt, it cannot compete with a true attenuater. It apparently just works on the preamp before the effects loop. The idea was apparently originally put forward on a Fender forum board and many people tried it and it worked for them. http://homerecording.com/bbs/showthread.php?t=282264 or I don't see what all the confusion is about with this device. In a nutshell, it's an inexpensive Volume pot for an amp's pre-amp....that's ALL. Since the majority of guitar amp's do not include a Volume pot for the output of the pre-amp stage, such a control CAN prove useful, in the same way that any OTHER control has its use in an amp's design. Personally, i find having an additional volume control at this stage of the signal path to be very useful. Keep in mind that most of an amp's tone-shaping occurs in the pre-amp, NOT the power section. This fact, together with the fact that most players shape their tone further with several stomp's that feed the pre-amp, can result in some very useful additional sound-shaping capability when you introduce a pre-amp-out Volume pot. (For example, try driving the output of one or two of your favorite OD stomp's harder than you've ever dared to before into your amp's input, and you'll begin to see some possibilities. OR, connect a compatible device into your FX SEND, THEN feed that output into the Omnisonic box....) If you look at it this way, introducing an additional control in the signal path makes perfect sense. But in reality it is an alpha pot, knob, two jacks, some cable and a casing. It is not a true attenuater but it does sound different when I use it, to when I just use the amp set low. I don't know why it works, but it does make a difference.... Here is a photo just an alpha pot, knob, two jacks, some cable and a casing as I said: ....................................................................................................................................................... 10. Hi Musikron I play through the clean channel on Valveking 112 with amp volume set to 9 but I use one of these Omnisonic Tube Amp Volume Boxes set to 3 http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Omnisonic-Tube-Amp-VOLUME-BOX-for-PEAVEY-Classic-30-50_W0QQitemZ140336608052QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_0?hash=item20acb6b334 I still get a nice valve sound out of the amp but my wife and kids can live with my playing volumes....It had to be done, I am a family man. Maybe this is why I have not heard anything "ghosty" or "quacky" just sounds like a nice "OK" bluesy neck pickup to me. By the way I know nothing about potting a pickup how can you pot it after the case is soldered on....? ....................................................................................................................................................... 11. Yes, I took the neck p_up out and it is as dry as bone, no wax in there, by the look of it, and does not look like the cover was ever soldered.....the cover moves definitely not attached, I could just pull it off if I wanted. What do you think? How can this still sound nice through my Valveking 112 in this condition???.....I only use the clean channel on my amp, mostly picking out blues stuff I am learning, either just on the neck pickup or neck and bridge together. ........................................................................................................................................................ 12. Just had a look at it again and when I just lightly rock the neck pickup it feels like the casing is loose. I will have to take the neck pup out and see if the cover is soldered properly.
  13. Hi Musikron So they were unpotted?? prior......to you potting them.... is that how they come. The neck pickup on 89 Sheraton seems to me like it is not potted, as I say when I tried adjusting the pole pieces the whole six poles move. That can't be right...?
  14. Come on Eze I am waiting for you photos so I can put you number two in our exclusive club......:-) We have 6,050 registered forum members and 765 visits to this thread. 15. Thanks SH we are pretty sure all these were made in the 80 's Musikron interesting you decided to stick with your stock neck pickup, the neck pickup on my present Sheraton definitely needs potting so I am going to opt for a re-placement, I tried adjusting one of the poles and there is a lot of movement in there. I really looking for to seeing the photos of Eze's E-by-G....... Then he can be officially number 2 in our E-by-G owners club We have 6,040 registered forum members and 710 visits to this thread. 16. Thanks Musikron Beautiful Has to be number 1 in our "Epiphone by Gibson" headstock Sheraton's owners club ....Eze's guitar can be number 2. Get mine Next Saturday if all is fine with it. You have 7 digits in your serial and the first 6 denoting 1986 September by the 09. My starts with 7 but has 8 digits not much rhyme and reason to that...can't see why they started putting a 0 after the year and month. Going to have to find more with serial stickers to compare. Just wondering is it all stock or have changed anything on the guitar assembly, pickups.
  17. Hi rpach10115 So does yours have the "Epiphone by Gibson" headstock? Are you in our club :) We have 6,030 registered forum members and 552 visits to this thread. 18. Welcome Eze and now we have two owners and one prospective owner of these guitars. Is it possible to post any photos and I am trying to find out if they all have 8 digit serial numbers. Looking forward to seeing the photos...... the one I am interested in is Tobacco Burst and Musikrons is Natural, what finish is yours? 19. Thanks Suicidedhummer Yes thanks, the serial must be 1987 as they only produced these headstocks between 1986 and 1988. I am amazed though at how few there are on this forum only two people so far own them. Musikron really rates is guitar as Samick Sheratons go, so: We have 6,022 registered forum members and 473 visits to this thread. 21. Hi Jerry and Musikron I will not keep this thread going but will try to make a list of owners of Sheratons with the "Epiphone by Gibson" headstock. It does seem that these are fewer on the forum than I imagined. Jerry you own, and have owned some delicious guitars, you are a lucky man. If some of those you have shown, are the ones you have let go. I can imagine the "keepers" you have must be a very fine array of musical instruments. And Musikron you promised me a photo :-).....So you are the only other guy on this forum so far with a Sheraton with a headstock like this (also a big thank you for looking at the photos and giving me your assessment on the Sheraton): out of 6,014 forum members and 310 visits to this thread. Please if anyone else knows of anyone else who owns one, or sees one for sale, drop me a line.

  23. Smips Maybe they will come in handy for all your repair and sell guitars I don't believe this 6,006 registered members on this forum and this thread has had 227 views and to date the list of owners of Sheraton's with the "Epiphone by Gibson" headstock is two people Musikron JoeSamick
  24. Hi Smips This is the plan Emperor will have black Mean 90's (so the duncans will be spare) The "Epiphone by Gibson" Sheraton gets the Duncans Other Sheraton gets Lollar minis The Sheraton I have at the minute plays fine and the pickups are OK, but when I play it and then play my Emperor which currently has the Duncans well....it makes me want to hear the Duncans in Sheraton, which simply just sound better, clearer and more defined. So I will have three pair of Epiphone pickups for fleabay myself.... if you want them cheap...Smips I will have no use for them...
  25. 6,006 registered members on this forum and this thread has had 201 views and to date the list of owners of Sheratons with the "Epiphone by Gibson" headstock is two people Musikron JoeSamick Nice Sherri JM but no cigar just those Sherri's with the headstocks like this
