  1. Oh' date=' and while we have Epi1's attention, I would like to put in a request for an accurate reissue[/quote']

Epi 1 Epiphone has all those models that were unique to Epiphone and ICONS in the world of music.

Non more ICONIC than the Epiphone Zephyr 311TN

If you made an elitist Epiphone Zephyr 311TN with a good set of vintage minis from the mother company...I personally would pay you good money for a quality reissue of one of those, and you can throw me in a sticker and a poster like this......

Must be a lot of blues enthusiasts out there who would like an Elitist Epiphone Zephyr 311TN in their hands......

    hooker.jpg

While on the question of stickers my Epiphone gear Sheraton, Zephyr Blues Deluxe, and Pacemaker amp I bought all second hand.

But I just bought a brand spanking new Gibson Firebird V..........not a sticker in sight...(other than "Case Made in Canada" on the case) [biggrin].........Thanks for visiting the forum Epi1......Give us quality for the dollar and the models we want and your profits will soar.....a lot of good guitars out there.....but where else can I find a Zephyr, Wilshire, Sheraton.......play to your strengths...

  2. Thanks' date=' cooper.

I like playing this guitar very much, but may I ask why people are talking about it so many years later? I mean, is there something that makes it more "special" than other more expensive guitars?

    m[/quote']

No it is a plain old well made Samick Sheraton from the period 86 to 88 as mentioned some features differ. Those of us that own them know they are a solidly built fine examples and in my case I think the E-by-G is the Sheraton for me.....

I am currently customising mine and should be finished at the end of this week goes to guitar tech on tuesday for the fitting of new pickups and harness and I will post when all is done.

Just enjoy your fine example of a Sheraton II that is all it is...

  3. Hi:

Thanks' date=' the number is 880901890.

Is this a "Sheraton"? I couldn't figure that out from the previous messages!

    Thanks,

    m[/quote']

yes it is a Sheraton II but with some unique features

When I saw you Truss Rod Cover I assumed it was an 88

    1988

    month 09

    unit number01890

I would guess if you take out your bridge pickpup any time you might not have the access of the earlier models if you go through the thread you will understand. Another late 88 does not have that feature...

  4. Hi:

I am trying to identify my guitar and found this forum. It's an "Epiphone by Gibson" 335-style. Any information about it is appreciated -- model name' date=' year, history, etc. I've had it since 1993.

    Thanks,

    Michael

    Hi egr

if read through this thread you find feaaatures that should be able give you an idea if it is 86,87,88 it is one of those years is there a number sticker on the back of the headstock..?

  5. Thanks cooper; I think the guy is asking way to much. He's asking what I would expect an Elite or JLH to go for.

    ($1500)

That is ridiculous......second hand guitars fetch a good price here in Sweden and $625 would be the absolute limit for a mint condition cased E-by-G completely stock and unaltered.

I am sure and if you look though this thread you will find a beautiful white E-by-G went for around a $500....(the only white one I have ever come across)

I will check that now....the Baccy Burst in the first link went for $749 and the white one in the second link for $520

    Tobacco Burst E-by-G on ebay

    white E-by-G on ebay

So your seller is living in cuckoo-land diverden.....

  6. I found an 88 E by G Sheraton on Craigs list. The pics look pretty good. Not sure about the value of these guitars.

Any idea on original price and what a decent resale should be?

    Hi

I bought mine for 2700 swedish krona $375 and I consider one of the best guitar deals I have done.

Mine has a few slight nicks and knocks but nothing that stops me loving the guitar....In fact I think this particular Sheraton is all the better for it.....

I was willing to pay up to $625 if in immaculate condition with a case (that would be a fair price here in Sweden...mine did not come with a case).

PM any of the 9 owners listed for further info. If the one you are looking at is late 88 it may not have the easier access via the bridge route which makes these great guitars for easier modification....

    Good luck

  7. It is with great sorrow and a trembling lip I have to report that JoeSamick has left the forum.........

He let it be known that he wishes to spend happy days practicing with his beloved 5 guitars.

He enjoyed his 6 months on the forum and now wishes to ride off into the sunset.......

Therefore the E-by-G members club is closed at nine members..............

of course the thread is here as a resource to all E-by-G owners of which I am one to use as a reference.

Also anyone with questions about 1986-1988 Korean Sheratons now have 9 forum members they can PM for information.

Of course if anyone else wishes to takeover the maintenance of this thread they are very welcome to do so.

    Headstock

  8. Those appear to be the Samick made p_ups from the period that your guitar was made. I had similar ones

that I removed and took the cover off one of them..there was some "minimum wax around the twin coils and

some coating on the bar magnet..but certainly mine were not potted" or encased in wax. There is no problem

with these on low volume amps. Now if you are running them through stacked marshalls wide open..yes

you probably would get some squeal..but as long as you are playing these guitars at a reasonalble volume

it is not an issue. A lot of the older P-90s didn't come wax potted and didn't cause a problem at reasonable

    amp levels.

BTW: The "double potted" Epiphone 57CH I have from my Epi LP has actual wax residue around the edges

    of the cover inside.

    Hi Carverman

That neck pickup is my favourite stock epiphone pickup....(did not like the pickups on my JP or the 87 Sheraton, I have a cheap Samick (not epiphone) SG and the pups on that are the best stock pickups I have run across) they are fine for me on my 89 Sheraton, I really like the stock pickups on that guitar. Also you must understand I am just comparing these against each other, with the two amps I have here, at the levels I play at...to my particular tastes and to suit type of stuff I like to try and pick out.

I suppose it is a bit of a lottery and I always play clean at low levels and never had any problems with squealin or such...that neck pickup is as dry as a bone...not much wax in there

I am actually selling that 89 Sheraton once I have the 87 modded and set up. Two really nice near identical guitars. Once I have the A1 fro the guitar tech with the 87 the 89 goes but just holding it as insurance until then....Just a couple of weeks now...

  9. Here's your family........

    Peter

    BTW nice Rockingham [biggrin

Fly' That Rockingham is indeed a fine looking guitar......I did not fully understand why you want to try the floating bridge on your Sheraton is the bridge shot..... This thread has nothing to do with the headstock of these guitars it is more about how they are put together internally. You say there is no serial sticker....well from what we have found out on this thread if you could supply decent photos of the neck and bridge routes sometime when you have the pups out. We could possibly tell you if it is a 86, 87, or 88. Also something else that hilleri added and he brought my attention to the neck on my E-by-G is slimmer than my 89 Sheraton he mentioned that I measured and there is a fair difference. This is why this thread exists nothing to do with the headstock. You can find out a lot about you particular Sheraon by reading carefully through this thread.

  10. I thought I'd better leave a brief description for the Photobucket bods who might NOT see any significance in the Epiphone by Gibson logo...hard to believe that anybody could find it in the least bit boring :-({|= .

I tried to go to your photobucket to see some photographs of your guitars. The one you posted has a january date on it..... and it would be really helpful if you could post some clearer up to date photographs of your guitars and your epiphones in particular' date=' especially any you might own that are relevant to this thread.

I'll try the floating bridge off my Peavey Rockingham on my Sheraton and see...or rather' date=' HEAR what it's like[/quote']

The Gibson Crest you referred to was a full hollow like the Casino, Thinline Zephyr (which also because it was full hollow had a floating bridge). Will be interested to see if you can adjust the action to a suitable height using your Rockingham bridge on your Sheraton which also has the centre block which would make it a better candidate for a fixed bridge I would have thought.

Music should be fun....life should be a laugh

J I totally agree with you' date=' life's a Flying Crosbuttock then you die.....:) [biggrin [biggrin]

So do post some decent photographs of your guitars......or I will set Peter and Strumbone on you...........As they say "no photos it don't exist"......So show us your geets Mr Buttock........

  11. I own Epiphone by Gibson Sheraton s/n 880509155. I bought it new (in 1988 I imagine...it was so long ago that I can't remember...it wasn't my first guitar but I always think of it as my first decent one.)but it's had some mods done to it...pickups and tuners...I never DID like the gold plated look. I also lacquered the fretboard and it made it smooth and bullet proof! I'd stick photos on here but I can't figure out how to...ba***rd technology...well KEEP IT TO YERSELVES THEN!![angry]

I have read elsewhere on this forum about OVEN CLEANER or T-Cut to strip the unwanted gold plating...I bought some oven cleaner five or six years ago and used it once...I must still have the rest of the can somewhere...I presume that it isn't age sensitive??[cool] I also read that the bridges on some Sheratons are of an odd size and that replacements are difficult to find...and a pointer towards WD Music...who can probably charge what they like if there's nobody else. I wonder why it wouldn't be possible to go the Gibson Crest route of a 335 style guitar toting a floating bridge! Get one with a nice long ebony base and it'd cover the stud holes...it'd make for a different sound I bet! Floating bridges aren't everyone's cup of tea' date=' but eons after the design of the tunomatic bridge, there are still lots of rockabilly and jazz guitars that have floating bridges...and if you can no longer stand the ugly appearance of tired gold plating....

music should be fun....and life should be a laugh!![/quote']

    Hej Mr Buttock

The photo posting is a bit of a palaver you have to open a photobucket account upload your photos to that them you can take the url and paste them in your posts here. There is a button to help with that which looks like a little mountain....press that it will give a little bit of code and you can paste the photo url inside that and your done. Welcome I see this is your second post found your first entertaining....will be nice to see your E-by-G.....

Interesting point about the floating bridge option, thought of that but would maybe sit a little too high I thought....

I have a friend in England a precision engineer by profession and a blues freak working on a solution, and he is working on a fix for the 71mm 74mm mismatch....watch this space....

  12. Some interesting points there hilleri especially the different necks.....I am sure that will interest a lot of people. I will have to take a closer look at my 87 and 89. hilleri seeing your friend is not a forum member I have put the other down as hilleri(2). Also those headstock differences may be able to help you date your "yellow" interesting thread going at the moment about caring for guitars "pampering" I think it is a bonus the sun got to yours as long as it did not affect the shape of the guitar...

  14. FANTASTIC !!!

You can add one new owner to this forum.

I just bought my "E by G" Sheraton at an auction sale this week. I've been doing some internet research since I didn't know too much about the history (I simply bought it because I loved the look of it) and found this site today.

Serial number is 71107775' date=' which I take from other posts on this site means November 1987, production number 07775, Samick-made. (initially thought it was a '71 or possible '77 model....which was confusing).

It's vintage sunburst, and in reasonably good condition. Tailstop is pitted, but I suppose that's to be expected.

After re-stringing, it had it's first gig last night. I think once I've had it properly set up I'm going to fall further in love with this lovely guitar.

I'll get some pictures and get them posted.

I can't tell you how happy I am to have found this site [biggrin

    StevieD

Welcome to the forum and welcome to this thread....glad you found the thread useful...your guitar is same year and month as Albannach's just over the water in the Emerald Isle.

You must have had a good look at the images on this thread do try and post some nice photos, now we have 3 87's will be good compare, mine is 10 months earlier.

It is going to get new "fancy innards and pickups" and a full set up by a well respected guitar tech in Stockholm in about three weeks.

I have not even changed the very old strings, since I bought a few weeks ago, as I want this guitar just right.

Looking forward to seeing the photographs.

  15. It´s cool that even after a few days of reading this topic it´s getting easier to spot the few details that differ the years from each other. Nice 87 and early 88 those ebay ones. the pickguard € change seems very much a change that happened round new year ´88. Most exciting!

Hats off for the starter and everyone whos contributed!

    Hi Hilleri

I thought it would be interesting to just do some research into 86/88 period of Korean Sheratons. But it is pretty amazing what you can find out about these guitars and how they were made by just getting a few people together and comparing notes. Collating this thread is well worth it I feel but.

I think I will call it a day when we have 10 members for each year and we can get a clear picture of the development over the period and what is happening with the odd serials which do not equate in the guitar dater. Then maybe in the future I will take all the info from this thread and create a Wiki on the E-by-G. Love or hate them they are a part of the history of the Epiphone Sheraton and that in itself is a good reason.....I LOVE MY SHERATON...........not in a biblical sense of course....

  16. Well after a lot of searching and strife from teh 'boss'' date=' I eventually found the piece of paper with a copy of the serial number for 'Dusty'.

    71108446

Checking a couple of sites gives this rather inaccurate dating of the guitar. This from Guitar Dater -

    Guitar Info

    Your guitar was made in

    Korea

    October c.1971

    Production Number: 8446

If this is at all correct then there is something wrong with the serial number![/quote']

Forget about the guitar dater for E-by-Gs......

    if that is the number

That would equate to 1987, November, production number 08446 That fits with the specific signs on the guitar for a late 87 early 88 model. Mine is january and yours is november that accounts for the slight differences pickguard TRC etc.

As you can see from this view the PU ring at the neck sits low in relation to the tail of the fretboard giving the thicker end towards the bridge PU which has the skinny PU ring as company.

great job that Albannach that image is a nice resource for Samick sherri owners it highlights the 71 mm bridge.........

That is one beautiful Sheraton you have there. The finish on your guitar I find really attractive and the binding really sets it off. I have a feeling it could be 88 because the logo on the pickguard is identical to my 89 Sherri and different to my 87 E-by-G.

I really like that guitar, if you ever consider trading for a Tobbacco Burst let me know......[biggrin]

I would only ever trade my E-by-G for another E-by-G and I have taken a shine to yours so beware......[confused]

    guitarc.jpg

So no serial, I will put it in the early 88 section for now, thanks for posting.

So what would you call that finish or is it just a natural and the lighting and colour balance make it look so fine.

    would these do the trick

If so then transport is my big problem....Russia is "close" to me and there are overnight ferries from Stockholm to St Petersburg....maybe the Russian mafia can source some for me......:)

If I can source them I will need some tips on getting the longest life out of them, Swedes love their guitars and it is especially cool to have vintage gear, I am sure I will be able to source here......... just price.

Is it a tube that was only used on amps...... did it have any other applications.........

The guy says the amp is playing sweet now.......will do some research today.

  22. Thanks Carverman

Once again I find your depth of experience extremely enlightening and helpful. I pick the Pacemaker up on Saturday morning if all goes well when I test it out.

I like my Peavey but I never venture out of clean and rarely use the reverb I stay with it on the A setting.

I am not swapping my Peavey for the Pacemaker in a literal sense.

Both amps will be here next week. This will be the first time I can really check out two amps back to back.

The Pacemaker will cost what I paid for my Peavey second hand and can get selling it on. In that sense it will be a straight swap.

I struggle to move the Peavey even across the room. Seeing I only use the Peavey in A I think I would have been better with a Peavey Valve King Royal 8.

The Pacemaker is half the weight and I have a feeling it is going to give me what I want.

The reviews at Harmony Central were very encouraging. I am really looking forward to getting the amp.

Looking forward to next week and getting to know the Pacemaker, I have a good feeling.

Will post on how it is going thanks for all your help.
