1. Drdos, did you get yer VSr yet? You owe us a review...
2. Seems you're the only one, LS. Nice guitars, sort of a LesStratoTelePaul-o-caster:
3. Didn't pay much attention to the solder work, but I should have. Next time I take it apart (to upgrade the rvrb & install new caps) I'll post some pics. I think you'll like it, post some pics and/or vids when you get it.
4. Wow, that's nice work Jay, thanks so much for the effort...
5. Thanks M - I'm still not sure if it was worth the wait or all the hype, but for now I'm keeping it. It's a far more flexible head than the VJr, seems to have more substantial iron, and I expect will be a great platform for mods. Please feel free to link these posts over at Sewatt, I'm anxious to see what kinds of improvements the board-level guys come up with. If Epi had come out with this last year as planned, there would probably already be several BillM-type web sites all over this thing. BTW, the stock tank is the short-spring Ruby Tubes EB2C1B. The long-spring version sounds much better, but it's standard Fender dimensions (17") and won't fit. Cheers, Brian
6. Nice, with Rob and Dennis, that makes three of us. I've also had some replies on Youtube from folks who got theirs this week, so it looks like VSrs are finally shipping in force.
7. Hey all, thanks for the "feedback" yuk yuk. The squealing is definitely not a hollowbody vs. solidbody issue, believe me, I know the difference quite well having played big-*** hollowbodies for some 35 years. It's the P-90s pickups in the Riviera, they're not waxed potted and they need to be. Or replaced with something better, or at least I need to stand further away from the amp on that "On The Mountain" setting when using that guitar. It's not really the kind of setting most folks would even want to use with a semi, so not such a big deal. Having said that, the amp does have some issues when Gain, Master and Presence controls are all maxed out. Still, it's a kickass little amp for $300, I'm not tired of it so far, and it may yet make it into the permanent stable.
8. Sorry about the crappy playing, not warmed up yet. I'll post more as the day goes on:
9. Hi all, I've been busy this afternoon, just had it hooked up for a few minutes to an Avatar cab with some cheapo MIC Celestions in it so not the best eval rig. Here's my initial reaction, more to follow tomorrow after connecting to the VJr cab which has a 12" Hellatone installed: :) - Has a nice range of crunchy clean to full-on Hendrix distortion. Makes my tele feed back very nicely when cranked. UPDATE: AND IT GETS GREAT TONE AT VERY LOW VOLUMES :) - Hi and Mid tone controls are meh - they don't seem to make as much difference as you might expect. Bass control works OK. UPDATE: NOW THAT I'M USED TO THEM THEY WORK OK. ;) - Presence control does nothing that I could hear; may revise this tomorrow. UPDATE: DEPENDS ON GAIN/MASTER SETTING. IT DOES MAKE A DIFFERENCE. - Reverb is just OK. It's sounds good at first, but anything past 9:00 and it's too much. At 12:00, it's unusable, and at 3:00 all primary signal is lost and sounds like crap. In general the reverb chip sounds more like DSP delay, but it's almost tolerable. A pedal or a spring tank mod may be a better option. UPDATE: ACCUTRONICS AND RUBY TUBES MAKE A 3-SPRING REVERB TANK THAT CAN IMPROVE THE DELAY. :D/ - I like the overall volume of the thing. You can get great distortion without breaking the windows, and it can be just as loud (or quiet) clean. Great for small to medium gigs, large venues mic'd, and home studio use. A little too loud for the bedroom. UPDATE: I TAKE BACK THE BEDROOM THING - IT SOUNDS SPECTACULAR AT LOWS VOLUMES TOO. :) - It has the expected 4, 8 and 16 Ohm speaker outputs, front-panel standby and power switches, only one channel and no effects loop. - I haven't opened it up yet, will do tomorrow and post pics. UPDATE: SEE POSTING BELOW - PICTURES GALORE. :D - Overall it seems a much better value for $300 than the Valve Special I have which is caca. UPDATE - STILL ACCURATE. Chris - I will try to post some vids tomorrow, my project for the day... SEE FOLLOWING POSTS. Crust - I beleive "frickin" has become an acceptable colloquialism at this point. If not, I'm in big frickin' trouble! RSDx / Twang - it matches a VJr cab perfectly (18" x 11") and it actually looks fairly handsome up there. YES IT DOES. I foresee a lot of VJr heads coming up on Craigslist, better get rid of mine fast:
10. Well I ordered it in February. Sweetwater didn't call or e-mail to see if I still wanted it, and there was no record of it my SW account, so I assumed it had been cancelled. Sorry if I don't seem thrilled, it's just that it's October now and ever so slightly anticlimactic. Maybe I'll be more excited when I get it cranked up.
11. It came today from Sweetwater while I was out. Good thing they didn't call in advance, I would have cancelled it. But it's here now so I suppose I'll have to at least check it out...
12. If you keep it in good shape, it will always sell for at least $200. If one came up on Craigslist in Philly tomorrow, it would last for about 5 minutes. So what's all the hand-wringing about whether you got a good deal? You did, it's more than worth $200, now go and enjoy it.
13. If you search 'Epiphone Genesis'' date=' you'll find several previous discussions. Here's one: http://forums.epiphone.com/Default.aspx?g=posts&t=8670 No the others are stock. The sunburst is a Deluxe, the red and the restoration are Standards. They only made them in those three finishes to my knowledge. Still looking for a Custom (intermediate) model to buy, there's a black one on eBay that got no bids, I might ask about it at some point. Steve13 on this forum has a very nice sunburst Custom:
14. Here's an update on the Genesis rebuild I'm doing. It's been slow going, trying to figure out how best to repair the butchery this 30 year old girl took from previous owners, but I think I finally have it figured out. Rather than trying to do a factory-perfect resotoration, I'm making it into a gleaming chrome hot rod. Last night I got a pair of Gibson 490R/498T humbuckers off Craigslist ($80 the pair!), and installed a Bigsby B7and roller bridge (thanks TWANG!) and a set of Grover locking tuners. I wanted to get the hardware temporarily installed before I started painting (it will be traditional Stew Mac gloss black nitro) to make sure there would be no surprises. I still have to plug a few holes and do some sanding ang filler coats, but other than that, there's not much more to do before it goes into the spray booth. Below are some pics with and without siblings: If I do another one of these, I'll look for one that's got less body damage and do a nice natural version, I think. Cheers,
