  3. Yes, "Lucille" is a monster guitar!! I'm fortunate enough, to own one of those, as well... A 2002 model w/real ebony fingerboard! I'm sure your LP Trad Pro II is, as well. Regarding "wish I still had" guitars...I'd LOVE to still have my '68 LP Custom, '68 ES-355 Stereo, and 68 "Jet Glow" Ric 360-12 string! Kick myself, every time I dare to think about them!! Never mind, the '69 Marshall "Major" (200 watt) Full Stack! Seen below, in 1969 Polaroid print, when I was 19! Arrrrgggg!! ](*,) CB
  4. Thanks, jdgm! They've served me well, for decades, now. In fact, I've been playing the '80 LP Custom, for several days now, and am again reminded what a lovely version it is! The Neoprene bass stap REALLY helps with the weight, too! I use that, on both the LP Custom, and the '76 LP Deluxe, as it weighs a "ton," too! CB
  5. And yet, if you see them on E-bay, they tend to command much lower prices, than almost any Gibson made after that era! Regardless of actual quality. So, it shows you what a perceived, or misperceived notion can do, to resale values. Even in the 50's and early 60's "Golden Era," of Gibson electrics, there were Great guitars, and total Dogs, in every model range. I know, as I've play both...some that were outstanding, in every way, and other's WAY less so, as well as those that might be considered "average" for the time. So...??? Given the much larger quantities, that are made now, in every model, I think Gibson is far more "consistent" now, in both quality, and QC, overall. But, sure, some are bound to get out the door, when they shouldn't! That's mass producing, in general, and (maybe?) with Gibson, more due to internal problems between management, and those tasked with the production. Unhappy, disguntled workers, can/do effect build, finish, and QC. Even if/when it shouldn't. Bottom line, IMHO, is if you love your guitar(s), that's all that really matters! CB
  6. My 2 "Norlin" era Les Paul's. 1976 Deluxe, and 1980 Custom! Both weigh a LOT, and both sound/play GREAT! So…??? CB

  8. 'Cause their customers like them, maybe? I know I've been using the D'Addario 9-46 on my Gibson and Fender guitars, for years, now. (1) I like that gauge range, and (2) the D'Addario's last a long time, are easy to find, and at a decent/fair price point. CB
  9. I might add, that none of the other SG examples, from which I picked the one I liked most, of each model, suffered from "neck dive," either! That would be about 18 or so, other SG examples, in total. So...??? CB
  10. The best solution, is to play any SG (or any other guitar, for that matter) BEFORE you buy it! I now have 5 Gibson SG's, and NONE of them have the dreaded "neck dive!" I bought all (but 1) from my favorite dealer, and got to "cheery pick" the best one, out of the 4 or 5 they had in stock, at the time. The one I did by, on-line, from Sweetwater, a 2018 SG Jr., was the heaviest of the 4 they showed. Luckily, it also had a nice dark fingerboard, and lovely grain, in the body! So...try, before you buy! Cheers, CB

  12. I've always preferred the Gibson headstock, on Epi guitars that are of Gibson designs. Les Paul, SG, 335, etc. Like the ones for the "Japanese Only" market! I'd like to see Epiphone do that, on all those (Gibson) clone models. The Epiphone original designs, should retain the Epi headstock, be it the extended "hourglass" or the clipped cornered "Jazz Box" verion(s). The exception, for me, would be on the Sheraton. I love the old "Kalamazoo" era headstock, as opposed to the clipped corner version they're using now...which, to ME, is too large for the Thin-line Sheraton body. To me, it looks out of proportion. But, that's just ME. CB
  13. I'd say: "Whatever you can GET, for it!" Vintage SG Jr.'s, with that much "modding," will be of little to no "collector" value. If it was in "Original" condition, it would command much higher pricing. But, good luck, with your sale. CB

  15. As Brian alluded to, Rory was a LOT better player, than he's given credit for. Seems, in most "Top 100 polls" he's ranked about mid way. IMHO, he should be nearer the top level, than that! I can't help but wonder, if he had been a "Star" in the popular sense, he would be rated a LOT higher, regardless of his obvious amazing talent. We're such a "celebrity" culture, that it tends to taint, or skewer, those ratings. Again, IMHO. CB
  16. I'm (Sort of) amazed, there have been 150 posts, on this?!! PRS makes great guitars, and Gibson makes great guitars. What one chooses, is up to them. No "justification," or denigration, needed! IMHO, as always. CB

  18. "I" don't claim, in any way, to know all there is about guitar building, or even Les Paul's. But, from what I've read, one reason for weight relief, was complaints from the buying public, on Les Paul weight. Another reason, was that the newer wood, is denser, than the wood they used in the '50's, and '60's, so they have used some weight relief, in order to more closely resemble, the original's. I understand, too, that the Custom Shop uses a much lighter weight Mahogany, as often as possible, in one-piece bodies, whereas Gibson USA, uses more of the heavier wood, in 2 (or more) piece bodies, and utilize the weight relief, for comfort, and (they claim) more resonance, as well. It's a lot more work, and time consuming, for them to do that, so I don't see why they'd make false claims. I (personally) think Gibson does an excellent job, MOST of the time, in turning out products, in ALL price ranges, for people of every financial means. Those who can (and will), have nothing but Custom Shop version, have those. The rest of us, can either save for a long time, and get a CS model, or find perfectly great Gibson USA models, that will do an equally fine job of making music! It's mostly in the fingers, and "heart," anyway. But, whatever works, and/or floats your boat! It's all good! I think, sometimes our criticism of Gibson's QC is warranted! But, a lot of the time, it's unrealistic expectations, and just "whining!" If any product, guitar or not, is not up to snuff, it's simply your own responsibility NOT to buy it! And, with some exception(s), one reason I rarely buy guitars "on line!" Especially expensive versions! But, that's just Me! IMHO, as always. CB
  19. My Norlin era (76 LP Deluxe, and '80 LP Custom) Les Paul's, as well as my 2000 Classic LP have that wider binding in the cutaway! The spec'd wider cutaway binding started in the late '60's ('68-69) Doesn't bother me, a bit! Nor does the narrower, of the current, and CS models. The narrower binding, showing part of the top material is the way LP's were bound originally. So, it's not a "mistake" or "flaw," in either case! Just a different spec. CB
  20. Well, Pip...anyone that knows you (personally, or from years on this forum) knows you're not anyone's "Fanboy!" LOL I own my fair share of Gibby's too, and am delighted with ALL of them, regardless of their initial price point, or (so called) perfection, or lack thereof! But, I also love my Fender's, Gretsch's, Rickenbacker's, Epiphone's (vintage and newer), and my "Cheapo's" (Danelectro 12-string, and Squire Bass VI). Otherwise, I wouldn't have purchase them, in the first place, much less kept them for as long as I have...with some of them, that's been from 35+, to over 50 years! Anyway, as always, whatever trips one's trigger, is fine! Troll's be damned! CB
