blues, jazz, acoustic, been learning jimi hendrix but without the feedback ...
  1. Replying to "Who" made you want to play an f-hole guitar? ok, heres the story ... its 1978... my buddy wanted to get married to this girl, needed $200 and a ride to Texas... so I bought his Gibson ES-335 for $200, i played the guitar for several years in the college jazz band, then the guitar passed back to the buddy... I didn't know one guitar from another, I just ended up with one in my hands, I put some heavy strings on it, it had a really full deep woody tone. It wasn't "who" played one, it was the "one" i played that still draws me to that semi-hollow body tone.
  2. thanks Jazz, from all i have learned, it seems that you can only tell which one has the right tone, feel, and vibe by visiting the music stores and playing the different models. Internets are great for looking at pictures and sharing feedback, but the only way to buy a guitar is hands-ears on.
  3. ouch, that had to hurt. looks like a pretty bad break, is it fixable ?
  4. my last purchase was May 2010 ... Crafter CT125 ... solid body Classical string electric $475 ... the strings are like butter on your fingers ... drawback is classical strings on an electric has all attack and no sustain purchase prior to that was Fall 2008 ... Ibanez Masa ... $350 ... Smaller body and slim neck with lower bout cutaway make it a big-toned acoustic that feels and plays like an electric. Dropped the tuning to Eb ... plays great ... dropped another 1/2 to D and it feels like butter. June of 2007, i purchased an Epiphone Wildat $399 ... it was a 2nd ... my expectations were set too high, i wanted a 335. I am ready psychologically to purchase another guitar, but my income is stagnant ... sure wish someone would make me a killer deal that i couldnt refuse on a "scratch and dent" Johnny A or a 336 with a Bigsby.
  5. thanks Twiz, thats the advice i was really looking for, i researched prices and they showed a New Special @ $1200 ??? $550 is a pretty good job on the Special ? i was considering adding a Bigsby , new strings and setup ... total price of about $700 ??? Can you mix match the pickups ? keep the Dave Mustaine on the neck and put a Humbucker at the bridge or is that a bad idea ?
  6. i play blues and jazz , played a 335 in the college jazz band, i like the 335 tone, i have been playing " inside the house " since college, "unplugged". I am playing a lot of jimi hendrix but again unplugged in an acoustic format, no guitars on fire, no feedback ... lol ... i guess my genre would be Barry Manilow playing Jimi Hendrix lol ... you think there is a niche for that ? actually i guess its couch jimi... The guitar i really want is a 336 semi-hollow with a bigsby ... Gibson isnt knocking my door down to bring me one... and i am a poor man. my mind got to wandering when i saw the used LP Special. this LP Special may be a deal i can walk away from

  8. thanks for the input, what is the issue with "DM Live Wire" ? are they overdrive screamers ?
  9. i play some Hendrix, however i have been playing it acoustically ... i am less of a dive bomber ... more in the vain of Stevie Ray on Lenny and Riviera Paradise ... and yes ... i would say they are seymore duncan live wire ... i guess ... they have his name on the pickup ... ok, i dont know... now i am even more confused
  10. that is a lot cheaper than a Johnny A or a Florentine... there must be a whole lot of dif between the epi and gibson ?
  11. i was tempted to act impulsively, wanted to check prices on internet first ... i am not sure if a Dave Mustaine is an upgrade or defecit ... i was also trying to find out what they sold for new ... and it gets confusing ... the range in price is crazy.
  12. it gets confusing comparing 2 LP Studios and trying to figure out the $500 cost dif
  13. lots of good replys, thanks everybody i visited the nearest Gibson dealer, there were 2 used guitars that caught my eye, one was a ( Melody Maker for $450 )and the other was a ( 2003 LP Special that had the pickups changed to Dave Mustains for $550 ) i know the dealer also has an overstock of wine lp studio models asking $1300??
  14. i am trying to educate myself before buying my next guitar, i strongly gravitate to the Gibson brand name. So far I am learning that some main difference between a $7k guitar and a $1k guitar can be paint, binding, and gold accessories. I guess the farmer in me says i dont need no golden shovel, just a good one. that being said, bare bones, cheapest finish, no binding, which Gibson model delivers the best performance for the low bucks entry fee ?
  15. i would like to have a guitar with a trem, Johnny A looks real nice and so does the 356... but on a poor mans budget. i saw a used Gibson Les Paul Special for $550, previous owner replaced the pickups with Dave Mustaine pickups. I am considering purchase ... but... i want a trem ... question ... what type of trem would you suggest ? i am thinking floating ??? i want to make some cool tones but still have a poor mans budget. also ... are Dave Mustaine pickups any good ?
