  1. It will be nice if this thread starts to get hits again.

Although it wasn't an official gig, I played my first public even Saturday night. We set up outside on the front porch of a condo unit in Kent Island facing the community center parking lot.  Neighbors from the community came out with chairs and "refreshments" and we played two sets. Everyone kept their distance. The crowd got a lot bigger as the sun went down, but we had a good 20 people or so when these clips were recorded.

Just fantasizing - Thinking of shows I'd really like to see

Anybody else got a wish list for when this thing is over?

Well, this weekend I would have been at Delfest. I would have gotten my fill of Billy Strings there. In addition to his own sets, he always sits in with a lot of the other performers. Billy is always a highlight of the festival.

Although I didn't take this footage, I was not far from whoever did that day.

  3. Cool thanks. Me and some of my buds have been watching nugs.tv on Saturday nights to catch some great Dead and Company shows. We usually get a group text going during the show, and one night they got a Zoom going but I wasn't on that one. Those guys are much bigger Deadheads than I am, but I do enjoy their live sets.

I passed this along to them. [thumbup]

  4. Since this got bumped, I'll post another regret.

Back in about early 1989, I was working for the airlines. 4 of us that worked at BWI, all Non-Reved out to LAX one weekend. One of the guys we went out with had buddies who were from the Baltimore area but were out in LA as working musicians. We stayed at their place in Van Nyse. After one night of doing the LA scene, hitting The Whiskey and other places, me and one other guy rented a car and drove down to San Diego and Tijuana. Well the other guys went with their musician buddies to the studio and Ronnie James Dio was there recording. They all met him and hung out while he was recording whatever album it would have been.  We had a pretty good time ourselves, but I would have loved to hang with Dio for a day.

  5. First; Blue Oyster Cult with opening band Aldo Nova at Merriweather Post Pavilion.

Weirdest; Probably another BOC show with some punk band called Blotto opening. Man those hippies there to see BOC were not kind to Blotto! From the moment they came on stage they were pelted with beers, spit and anything else that could be thrown at them. They might have managed 3 or 4 songs before they decided to get out of there.

First complete song? From what I remember it was probably Sultans Of Swing. I was already a fairly adept player by this time, but up to that point I mainly learned riffs and parts of songs and partial solos.

  6. There's no big purchases or acquisitions that I'm looking forward to. It's the "doing" that I'm looking forward to.

Our annual Delfest was set for Memorial Day Weekend and has been postponed. There's still a glimmer of hope that it will happen later in the year.  I want to get back to playing gigs and ******* off afterward like we used to.  Can't wait to go to the bar with my buddy and band mate Steve and mess with everyone around us. We call it The Steve and Jay Show and it will run again.  😎

Leilani and I set up our gigging gear and go through songs from start to finish. We don't consider that practice, it's rehearsal.

For us, practice is learning something new and repeating it until it is under our fingers, and rehearsal is playing together as an ensemble to put the parts we learned together to make music.

That makes a lot of sense.

During this Quarantine one of the Bands I play with is going to try a Virtual Recording Session. Emailing Tracks to each other.. Maybe try to do a Rehearsal on Zoom too...  Anybody else doing that?

Both groups I play with have talked about doing this, but so far we haven't actually tried it.

Someone gave me an old Tascam DP-01 8 Track thing. I have it plugged-in and have been looking through the Manual, but I really have no clue what I'm doing with it. I haven't recorded anything yet.

  9. I see that many people play guitar or music in general to relieve a bad mood or anxiety. I have to be in a fairly good or positive mood to even want to play.

I just got that new PRS amp and used it at a rehearsal and I think two gigs. Haven't plugged it in since. But I did just get out my LP and played unplugged for awhile. Maybe this weekend I'll plug in and some tube crunch will inspire me.  😎

Remember when an Air Florida jet crashed into the Potomac River in 1982, killing 78 people,  and Stern called the airline to inquire about the price of a one-way ticket from National Airport to the 14th Street Bridge?  Yeah he kind of has a track record for poor decisions that get him a lot of attention.

Yeah. That's when he was on DC 101. He got fired and replaced by The Greaseman

  11. What motivates or inspires you to pick up your instrument and play?

For at least the past 15 years for me it has been the expectation of an upcoming jam or gig.  Especially the past 3 or 4 years, I've had a lot of different gigs with various bands. So I was just busy trying to get down song sets. I really didn't focus too much on technical stuff. When we gig I don't use sheet music or I-pad, so I usually just spend what time I carve out for practice making sure I memorize the chords and changes etc. for the songs on our list. I didn't really "practice" so much as I "crammed"

Last month, when all our gigs for Spring and Summer got canceled, I figured I'd work on my chops since I suddenly had a lot of time on my hands. one thing I had sorely neglected was my right hand picking technique, so that was one of the aspects I focused on and for several weeks I was making good progress. However, it's now been almost two weeks since I've even touched the guitar. I just have no motivation with no gigs or even jams planned. Plunking around the house doesn't do it for me. After I get off here, i'm going to force myself to play  though.

Anyone else feeling this way? Or maybe the boredom and isolation encourages you to play more?

  12. I always assumed someone did a Search for some topic and an old thread came up as  one of the results.

I think it's kind of cool to look over some old thread that I might have participated in 8 years ago. Or even if I didn't post in it, I recognize current or past members. IDK. Maybe I'm just weird.
