  1. Congrats on your new prize. It looks like a winner. One of the models I've yet to be able to try. Someday. Funny, I've always struggled a bit with long-scale, but the past few months have felt better in my hands than short.
  2. Nice, Sal! Never thought I'd hear a cover of a Supertramp supporting track cover here on the forum. Nicely done, too! It's a very impressive performance.
  3. I've used flat-tops on electrics before. The best results I've gotten is when trying to achieve some less harsh sounding tones. Somewhat jazzier, in nature. Like some old Les Paul(the musician) from the '50's. It's been ages since I've tried them. As far as in the studio, I do recall the harmonics' squelchy ringing out factor to be less. As one might suspect, the bite through the mix capacity decreased as well. They were beautiful as needed with a Gretsch Electromatic G-5124 I had. You can also do things within a mix to help them pop up. and out. Think Fleetwood Mac Albatross type of pretty. You mentioned recording in the thread title. All of that string noise can wreak havoc on a recording due to room, computer, interface, etc. Lots of advancement on that end 3-5 years ago. Isolating audio from the rest of the motherboard, better power supplies, etc. Just like any musical information, it's all much more present in the mid to upper ranges (1.6kHz to 4.2kHz, and strongest say 2.2kHz to 3.5kHz. It makes it stick out like a zit on the tip of your nose. I've had to do less and less to fix it over the years. It was like dealing with layers. Remove one thing and it exposed the next issue. Rather maddening for a while.
  4. Congratulations on your Dove acquisition! Wonderful guitars.
  5. I've got two that came with it and one more that I no longer have. On two of them, I removed the UST and secured it inside the guitar in case I wanted to use it again. Both guitars' tonal qualities improved. Being the geek that I can be at times, I replaced the saddle with similar Tusq material. I've since gone to bone, going the Bob Colossi route at guitarsaddles.com. That's where the real difference came. Putting a tusq back in to try it was an extremely short experiment. There was no way I was leaving it like that just to not waste a set of strings. The 3rd guitar came with a bone saddle. It sounds so good that I've not even bothered messing with it. One added benefit to leaving the UST system in there is the screw-on strap locks available are the cat's arse. (This place actually claims to have some in stock. I've not verified as I don't need any more ATM. https://www.melodeemusic.com/shop/c/p/Acoustic-Strap-Secure-Brass-Metric-x51608772.htm)
  6. The point was not early to bed, early to rise. Early to bed defeats the purpose. 🙂
  7. It really is a gift. You know it all changed when you get angry at yourself for sleeping in past 7:30. Such a waste.
  8. Man oh man, what a difference a year makes. The battles you were in this time last year repaid in some small way with a find like this, this year. You deserve it, Jinder! I can't wait to see some pics. Maybe even hear a little bit of a quick recording. Congratulations! EM7, is yours still in your stable?
  9. None of mine are vintage or of special acquisition. Mine would be to grab the hardest to replace. That would be my Love Dove. If I went on saving my favorite, it would be Rosie(CS SJ-200 Prewar Historic Series with Rosewood back & sides - hence it's name). The latter would be more likely as it took me a few minutes to think of the hardest to replace factor of only 50 being made. One of those big ones a couple weeks ago was an F4. Sheeeeze, man, that is something I cannot comprehend being part of. I've had way more than my fair share of "small" tornado, downburst winds and water spout events. Lost a tree two years ago with the last one that was never confirmed to touch anything and can't be counted. We were in the family safe spot when we heard it snapped. Scared the hell out of us. I've had decades of bad tornado dreams, but none after that night.
  10. Congratulations, Buc! I really enjoy Les Pauls. I might like Teles a bit better, but I really do like the Les Pauls. Heavy, though. Mine is 10.04 lbs. I ended up getting a 3" padded leather strap for mine. I am tube-tone sans pedals, but I do like to mess around with tones too much to not enjoy modern options. While I do have a tube amp, it's too big to drive. This is where I landed for now. Lots of fun.
  11. One note for clarity on my string duration. When I write of string longevity, I only count playing days. I started doing this after reading through some big long AGF thread that some of the longevity numbers seemed big, but were not being played all that often. Some others were being played every day, and those seemed to be the ones getting the 2-3 weeks of playing time. What started as an academic exercise became my permanent method. Makes for an interesting log. Gotta love spreadsheets. For example. I rotate my guitars from staying on the stand for a week and then cased & Humidipacked in the cabinet for 1-2 weeks. I changed two guitar's strings last week. They had 27 and 20 days of stand time, and 34 and 36 days of cabinet time. That totaled 61 and 56 days, or basically 2 months. It is a very rare day that each guitar on the stand does not get 30 minutes of play. I tried a set of those Pyramids this past Summer and thought they were fantastic. I found them to have plenty of low-mid warmth and depth, but wore out quickly. At $12.95 a set, I would need them to last much longer. One set of round wounds that I really enjoyed was the La Bella. There were times I thought them to be more loud for the sake of being loud than it needed to be, but they did not lack for tone. $7.95 a set and they lasted me some decent amount of time. I would use them much more if there was ever a John Pearse PB shortage. For anyone wanting that Sunbeam feel, but wished a little brighter, louder sound could do worse than try a set. Labella PB's - lights ("7GPS") and mediums were ("7GPM" )
  12. Man, modern day photography. My digital camera is 2004. I couldn't take a shot like this even if I had $3k glass (lenses). Please don't tell me these were done with a phone. If it was, I'm caving in and punting. Edit (submitted too soon) Do you do that winding process with all strings or just the Titaniums? I've been curious to try it with others.
  13. Hmmm - South Florida. Well, that blows my theory to Smithereens. I figured it was humidity getting to mine. All brands are short lifers for me. Could be anything from newer guitars to lower setups reducing room for natural string oscillation.
  14. I only looked for the instructions after someone here(Jinder, IIRC) wrote about the hazards of round-core strings. I bet I had used them at least 1/2 dozen times by then.
  15. Congratulations! I agree with That back looks sensational. I know that's just a bonus compared to tone and playbility and all, but it sure is purty.
  16. Lars, I've been pondering the open mic thing for when my voice becomes much more consistent. I also think it'd be nerve wracking as can be. To that end, I plan on scouting them out to find that low-key place with the supportive and small crowd by default. As it stands, I think only my wife and son have heard me play & sing songs. I still have a better vocal with her out of the room. If I look at her and see her foot move, my rhythm goes out the window. Strangely enough, I've got about a dozen songs or so on a little set-list that I call "Wooooo Sons" Those I can do on all but the worst of vocals days.
  17. Lars, I think the vocals were another whole level of outstanding improvement. I dare say that the next stop on your journey is to sing without fear. There's a lot of smoothness and projection going on that I think you thought was close to impossible just a year ago. On the mixing part, I thought the guitar's natural fullness was done very well. I really dig hearing the low end of even the high strings on the Gibsons and Martins(and others). You captured and mixed it very well. Nice space on vocals, pad and guitar, too. Bravo!!!!
  18. Very nice, DanvillRob. Very pretty melody with a great flow. You and your friend both done good. 🙂
  19. Sorry to hear that. Understand it, though. I had to return a tele for similar reasons. It's amazing which few thousandths of an inch does it to ya.
  20. I like them on my only Maple (Dove) quite a lot at first, but lost their magic just under 3 weeks in. (played near daily)
  21. Congratulations! It sure is a sharp looking guitar. Enjoy!
  22. I've got them on my J-45 Historic and Love Dove. Brings down some brightness. I've tried the Hummingbird and D-41, but thought it tamed too much.
  23. I leave mine out for a week at a time and then the off weeks are in their cases. I was using the soundhole humidifiers and silica gel packs to manage humidity as needed during the their storage weeks. I got a couple sets of humidipaks with new guitars the past two years, so I tried them out. It was too easy. I now use them exclusively. I've even started keeping two guitars out on my stand. With my HVAC and house, I do have to watch humidity more than I'd like. A Humid Summer along with some really bad advice from a big chain guitar store that wasn't GC had me using the sponge-filled sound-hole type humidifiers despite what my hygrometer was saying and it killed my Taylor 614 CE. Never did recover. That's when I researched and changed how I did things. Two of mine are 3 years old now. They started needing less and less of the season and weather changes this past year. My newer ones (6-18 months) followed suit as soon as I started using Humidipaks. I think I've noticed the same string longevity recently, too.
  24. My Bird is "just" a standard. The Dove next to it is the baked top Love Dove. If the new 1960's fixed bridge HB's were red like mine, I'd have two that one and my Standard. I understand your frustration. Kind of a weird hue below, but it's red cherry burst. I like the back on the HB much better.
