  1. First of all, I'm not that good of a player but when I'm learning a new song I have to teach the fretting hand not the picking hand. The picking hand keeps the rhythm and timing for me while the fretting hand tries to play what it's learned without messing up.

Ok, just looked it up and it it measures and looks every bit to be an LG1, as is ladder braced. Thanks for noting that difference.

Usually, but not always, the laddered braced LG1 did not have a center strip on the inside of the back. When you say ladder braced, you are talking about the underside of the top? All the backs are laddered.

I know you think its a J-45, and its kinda hard to tell from the pics, but it looks more like an LG of some sort.

I totally agree. The pictures aren't great, but I blew up the one of the front view and laid the bridge (6") across the body a couple times. With the choices being 16" or 14.5" or there about, it looks to be the 14.xxx"

  4. You can get a nice era correct set of tuners for a couple hundred.
you need to take it to a luthier who knows what he’s doing to find out condition.
The pictures are not detailed enough to look for obvious items or what mods or repairs may have been done.
let us know where you’re at and maybe someone can recommend someone.
    Good Luck

  5. I had a J185 Wildwood Hide Glue Special. It was a nice guitar but too vanilla for my taste. But then, All I do anymore is just play for my own enjoyment.  The model gets rave reviews for recording quality.

    Here's the one I had

  6. I don't think I would call that Collins 'much of a choice'. Neck is a little thicker than I like but I would love to try out a righty. The J45 Legend I had, had a slightly thicker neck than the Collins. I am surprised the top is not torrefied.

    And then there's this one...........

Collings CJ-45T........this I very much like.  The 1.75" nut width, 0.998" handful of neck..........sounds delicious!  Not Gibson of course but quite an instrument.  More expensive....yes......but we only live once.  I'm in negotiation.............

    Plus, made in Texas!

  8. Since it's 1.687" and a rounded shape and not the slim taper, I would not have any issues with it.

Narrower than the 1.724" J45 standard but it's a slim taper shape.

It's bigger than the DIF necks that are 1.574" rounded which I consider the skinny necks.

    It looks great!

  9. Yea, a 15 fret neck joint is unique. They moved the neck and bridge/saddle about 1" north to make room for the pickup. The sound hole is still in standard location for a 14 fret J. If I had a trained ear, I could probably hear a difference. That ain't happenin'.

  10. I haven't seen any multiply pick guards as original on standard J50/J45.

This is the era they were using the Gibson Sonic logo on the guard.

I think the '69's were square shoulder guitars.

When I recently fixed up as '68 I had a sonic guard made but they could only do white. I think most of them had a brown swirl.

I wound up leaving the guard off. These picts are not of my guitar.

  11. Even though I have no need of pickups nowadays, I still like to experiment and try things out. I have enough acoustics with and without pickups that I shouldn't be concerned with it. On the '68 J50 I just fixed up, Iput an Anthem in it. The under saddle with a microphone with a bone saddle. I was very impressed with the sound. I slapped a rare earth on an Alverez parlor a couple weeks ago. I was impressed. I had a Jackson Browne with the Trance system. It was the truest acoustic sound I've ever heard. It was also a pain in the a$$ to lug around. Just this past week I picked up a J160e. I haven't got around to checking out the P90 yet.

    Enjoy that j45!

Yes it has the under-saddle pickup.

I think that would defeat the purpose of why most switch to a bone saddle. Just my opinion.

You should be able to just pull that woven wire out from underneath without doing anything that cannot be put back if you want to compare the sound. That would only make a slight difference in your saddle height. It will give you an idea of what the bone against wood transmitting to the top sounds like.

  13. Does your bridge have the under-saddle pickup?

According to the specs, it should have a LR Baggs VTC Under Saddle Pickup.

Most switch to a bone saddle to get that bone to wood connection.

I would think if you slid out that wire, the sound would be very different. Whether you like it or not ????????

I've had tusq saddles naturally get string grooves in them.
