  1. Yeah its these sort of myths that have circled the internet for years and years and cannot be proved in any way what so ever.

Like when people would say that any weight relief ruined the tone and sustain not knowing about the holes drilled in to each guitar body since the mid 80s until someone xrayed their guitar thinking it was a totally solid body.

So does that mean that any guitar that isnt solid or have a set neck as described in the OP has no tone or sustain..  What a load of nonsense.

  2. I wouldnt really trust youtube videos. They compress the sound to hell..

Really though, as each piece of wood used to make a guitar is unique, so is each guitar. You can try 10 of the same guitar in a row and each will sound and play slightly differently depending on the exact neck angle and how the guitar is set up and also what sort of amp and pedals and setting are used. Its really hard to tell from online videos.

Also its the same with playability which I think is the most important thing. Most guitars even the cheaper ones are hand finished so each neck profile is also unique to that guitar. So if it says a 50s neck it could be in reality somewhere between a 50s and 60s neck.

Sadly if you are housebound and cant go and try some you will just have to take a chance.

Hope you get better soon. Im only just over a covid bout which started xmas eve.. I was only really sick for a week or so but it has been lingering and my sense of smell is only just coming back now.

Do you have any specific model to suggest? I'd like to avoid any drilling adjustment...

Honestly im not 100% sure but I think one like this

Gotoh Nashville Tune-O-Matic Bridge Large Posts | eBay

    12" saddle radius
Bridge post hole diameter - 6.5mm
Centre to centre spacing between the two mounting post holes - 74mm
Centre to centre of the two outer saddles (low E to high E) - 52mm

There is also TonePros that I think is what Gibson use sometimes

  4. Yup.. Our police no longer have the time to catch actual criminals or patrol our streets.. Cos they are doing stupid crap like this... Honestly.. Try reporting a crime and all you get is a crime number and a letter a short while later that will then tell you theres nothing they can do about it. Even if you have video proof or something like that. It really is pretty pathetic.

  5. So we are now at a point with digital stuff (I think) where it actually sounds pretty good...  As I have said a few times recently that Spark Go is pretty impressive.. Not the speaker, but the software is truly something else.

Then I just saw this vid about a new idea for open source DIY pedals. Well we have certainly come a long way since those Zoom multi effects pedals from the 90s  😄

So from what I’ve gathered the main problem with the sound of this pedal is that it’s not a real amp. It’s an algorithm which anticipates you do certain things which you might not necessarily do.

For example, if you roll back the tone knob it’s almost no effect until it’s all the way down then you get that throaty sound you expect. But in between there’s almost no gradient. As a player you notice that stuff but again you can adjust your playing to cope

This thing is a ton of fun and I don’t mean to besmirch it but it’s not as good as a really good amp.

As a practice tool with headphones this is absolutely perfect and I’m having a lot of fun. I would not want this to be my only option for recording or gigging but it is exceptional as a practice tool

NIce.  Glad you like it..  But talk of practice tools.. I have to say, I bought a Positive Grid Go for my brother in law a short while ago and man he loves that thing.. I think he texted me every day for that first week or two he had it to tell me how much he liked it 🙂  And I have been watching several videos on it. I think im gonna get one myself.  The backing track availability and the fact that it will analyse  songs and show you the tab for youtube videos and spotify tracks as well as the AI jam along feature I think must make it one of the best practice tools available.

And unfortunately, I can't provide any further details yet. But they'll be released soon enough...

Your Marshall seems to cost about $499 new - at least here in the USA. That's a very low price for a tube amp - even a 1W tube amp. If I'm not mistaken, it's made in Vietnam, so in that sense, it's not a fair comparison. That's about the same price my UK-built Class 5 cost me twelve years ago, and a UK-built amp is probably more directly and fairly comparable to a USA built one than either are to one made in. Vietnam; at least in terms of labor costs. Then there's quality craftsmanship and design and building experience, all of which are excellent from MESA, and as the article points out, they're the ones designing and building the new Gibson amps. Yes, I work for Gibson Brands, and MESA is a Gibson Brand, so yes, I'm biased, but MESA/Boogie has been considered one of the best amp builders on the planet by many guitarists for a long, long time. I bought my first one in the early 80s; long before I worked for Gibson. I'm sure your DSL 1 is a nice amp (I do like my Class 5), but I have not personally tried one, so I have no opinion to offer regarding its sound. It appears they use an 8" Celestion Eight 15 speaker, which I have used and didn't really care for - I replaced one in a 5F2A Princeton build I did a while back (which cost me more in parts than your Marshall cost you) with a Jupiter 8" Alnico that I like a lot better. It's not a horrible speaker, but it's probably the least expensive speaker that Celestion sells, which may tell you something about what kind of cost-cutting Marshall probably had to make to hit that price point. But if you like it and it works for your needs, that's all that really matters. Rock on! [thumbup]

Yeah this is the one I have.. Gone up a little since I bought it but still nowhere near $499 (about £390)..  I got this specifically to demo guitars I built so I dont have to carry around a huge amp. It really is a nice little amp for the price. Im less bothered about where they are made than what they sound like.

I'm not speaking for the company. While I do work for it, the following is just my personal opinion.

They won't be cheap.  They won't be inexpensive, either. And IMHO, those are good things.

Have you priced any competing all-tube, USA-crafted amps recently?

As the article noted, they're designed by Randy Smith and the MESA design team, and handcrafted in Petaluma, CA. So again, they won't be cheap junk, and they won't be inexpensive, but they are very sweet, sound great (IMHO), and look fantastic. They really nail the vintage Gibson amp vibe. IMO, they even improve on the performance of their vintage inspirations, and for what they are, I personally think they're very fairly and competitively priced.

    YMMV.

Well we dont have any further details yet..  But for instance I bought a Marshall DSL 1 not long ago which is a proper tube amp (combo), its only small but sounds like a mini JCM 800 and it goes from 1w to 0.1w  so its good for room practice..  Really nice for what it is and it cost £220 brand new..  If Gibson have something like that or other smaller amp in the line up I will probably buy one instantly.

  10. If they are good which I am sure they will be, I am up for a Gibson amp to go with all my Gibson guitars ...

HOWEVER...  Knowing Gibson which I do, they will probably be so eye wateringly expensive that it will turn me right off.  Id like one but am only prepared to go so far with that.

    You listening Gibson?  😄

It looks like Gibson Amps will be making a comeback very soon

NAMM 2024: The company's new reveal confirms the return of a cult classic model and some spec details

NAMM 2024: Just as CEO Cesar Gueikian suggested to us back in 2021, Gibson Amps are coming back and we now have the confirmation with a model name and a sneak peak.  Prepare to take flight - Gibson Amps

    HjzZzmF.jpg

'Ready for flight?' asks Gibson's new landing page where you can sign up for a mailing list to find out more when the time comes – and we'd bet on it being in the next couple of weeks.

An overhead view of a guitar amp is shown above with a Gibson Amplifiers tag attached to the handle. The amp is called the Falcon 20 with what looks to be a cream Tolex covering, attenuation controls (Full, Half and Low) and a Frequency dial. Frequency for what – tremolo? We think so.

This is not the first flight of the Gibson Falcon – the original tube amp (full model name GA-19RVT) was a 14-watt combo launched back in 1961 – the only year it was produced. It had both reverb and tremolo and proved just how forward-thinking the company was at the time in terms of features. The first Falcon had a 12" Jensen speaker, 6V6 power tubes like Fender's Deluxe, a trio of 6EU7 tubes for the preamp, and a 7199 tube for its reverb circuit.

Gibson first started producing amplifiers way back in 1935 but ceased production in 1967. Series like the GA and BR have become cult favourites but the announcement of Gibson's acquisition of Mesa/Boogie in early 2021 saw the idea of a return to US-made Gibson amps surface.

Later that year Gueikian confirmed to MusicRadar that Mesa/Boogie founder Randall Smith was taking a lead role in the project.

"Randy is working on the design of what are going to be the next evolution of Gibson amplifiers as well," the CEO revealed. "They are going to be made in Petaluma, California. So Randy's been leading that.

I must have been a good boy this year as Santa was very kind.

Positive grid Spark Go desktop amp.  All the effects and amp models in a little powerhouse of an amp. The perfect amp for when you just want to noodle away on the sofa with your guitar.

Lime 6 HX One multi effects pedal. The second last piece of the puzzle that is my pedal board. Rather than have multiple delay pedals (or many many more) staged differently, you just need one

Marrs' Guitars. Probably the most beautiful coffee table book I've ever seen of all the guitars in my hero;s collection.

The Cult Love t-shirt, a nice one from my son of one of my favorite albums.

I bought my brother in law that Positive Grid Go amp..  Not for xmas but for his birthday.. I spoke to him today and he absolutely loves it. He says he has used it with headphones and apparently the sounds, even the preset ones are really good quality...  He also says it gets tracks from Spotify and Youtube you can use to jam along too and it has an AI auto jam feature which puts drums and bass to whatever you are playing so it jams along with you and has an 8 hour battery life.. Also as its mainly done through your phone you have a fairly simple touch screen interface for it too... Im thinking of getting one myself now.

Hope he has a great future ahead of him, he's excellent.

I think I was bashing out Smoke On The Water at his age.

It was probably Greensleeves for me  😄  Wasnt in to rock at the time and thats what they were teaching at school..  Oddly I can still play it fingerpicking style quite well even to this day (even though I cant read proper music any more). So the teacher must have been doing something right.

  14. Yes theres been lots of this around for a while now, guitar ones are new though. I saw some science/tech type videos... In the thumbnail it would claim something like James Web detects life or, we were wrong about the universe.. Some big controversial topic like that. In every case it was like the above, no real revelations, no big news, just a bunch of facts or theories all found elsewhere on the net which in the end prove or show absolutely nothing. Yet some people out there are spewing this sort of content out daily almost flooding youtube just to get clicks.. What a sad state youtube has become.
