I am continuously amazed that this guitar I originally garbage-picked in Ohio, but sold on ebay (because I didn't have the nunchuck skills, bow hunting skills, computer hacking skills to fix it), soldiers on in a new life. And with a thread of its own. The headstock and neck were sticking straight out of a blue garbage container, I spotted it as I drove by and it seemed to say "pull up here" so I did...and was amazed to find the whole guitar in not-so-bad shape. I always liked the first-wave Japanese Epiphones, one of the very, very few brands of which I don't own an example. Hmm. The neck block...that's the deal maker/breaker with those. As we now see. Well...cheers all.
  2. SO...thanks to some leads here that enabled further searching, I ordered some Klusons I think will fit the bill for J-185s...I'll wait and post if they do. Again, the Kluson-type tuners I understand original to my era J-185s, and I was told this, have cheap buttons that tend to crack.   3. No I would rather replace the tuners themselves, not just the buttons, thanks. And the linked ebay tuners will not work because those are not press-in bushing only, they are threaded and oversized for the existing holes on the headstock but thank you.
  4. What's the deal with these...did they discontinue some or all of their other lines of Martin strings, or is this just a new addition? I notice they're a buck more retail than comparable Acoustics (at least the 80/20 phosphor are)
  5. I would like to replace the factory tulip tuners on my 2000 J-185. The stock tuner buttons on this Gibson have started to crack on a few. They are the bushing-only type, not the threading mount from the face of the headstock. I bought a few sets to install but they either didn't fit or, when I put this set on, I just don't like how far the buttons stick out. Is there a replacemnt Gibson or Kluson set for acoustics anyone might suggest? I do know the Klusons I just tried were from a Les Paul, but I dunno if there's a set that has a little shorter button shaft, single ring. Or maybe not...I know a lot more about Grovers than I do these. Thanks!
  6. Yes, you are correct. I am familiar with delam, and this is not that. No red flags though...as far as I gathered, the solid uniform line seen here has something to do with either the fill-in process around the pearloid, or similar process when they work on the headstock veneer. As stated, the rest of the guitar walks and talks Gibson. Feels and plays like one, with no further issues. It also passed inspection by a Gibson Authorized guy I know. SO...I now have my one example of this particular inlay in the guitar stable. Thanks all!
  7. well I've looked closely at all my MOP inlay Gibsons...and again, I don't have a single other example of an outline like this. It is indeed under the finish, as pictured. Now, sometimes MOP inlay has that issue where inlay meets the wood, but I know what that looks like and this is not that. However, none of you are putting any red flags up and if anyone can spot a fake or knows of a variation I do not...I'm sure it would be on these boards.
  8. Then what IS that? Any other Gibson I have with inlay doesn't have a uniform outline like that. In the original post, you can see it on the bottom left corner of the crown as well.
  9. Nope...but what I see a distinct line around both the logo and crown. Never seen anything like that, like it's an "inlay" decal. I could be totally wrong but if it's some kind of masking line or something that's a new one on me. Don't want to try and peel anything because if there's issues it's going back.
  10. Hi there, Did Gibson ever use decals instead of inlay on acoustics? To me this looks like decal on a 2000 J-185. Same thing for the crown. I've strummed it, and it sure walks and talks like a Gibson, and the serial number checks out.
  11. In the early '80s, being college-bound and owning three (!) guitars, my folks convinced me to donate one of them, my first "real" guitar, to a local shelter. A Velvet Touch (lol) 000-28 copy. Being told I had "too many..." well you know where that went as I grew older. Fast forward to 2015. I've been going to the same vintage guitar store for years, a guy did repairs in a basement shop. The acoustics were all on stands in the basement, very nice displays, well-kept. One showed up, and I thought it looked like my old one. I'd play it for a bit, on and off, whenever I'd come in with a needed repair or setup. This went on for a good six months or more. I would say to myself, man this sure looks and sounds familiar. Like, really, really familiar. And I hadn't ever seen another Japanese copy guitar by that maker ever, just mine. Finally one day it all came back to me when I finally looked near the end pin and saw a light brush mark of green paint. That's where I hit it with a paint brush by accident when my folks entrusted me to paint the closet in my room as a kid. Then the rest came back, the divot under the bridge from smacking it on my record player stand, scratching off (poorly) the Made In Japan decal on the back of the headstock. Welp, I marched upstairs and paid just under 100 bucks on the spot for it, more than twice what my mom paid when we picked it out at the local music store in 1974. So the round trip was about 32 years.
  12. Yeah...it's a good guitar based in general terms based on maker, shop (Boseman), and list price (quality of materials). I entirely see your point. The other side...this could be a very good recording guitar. Worked with enough guys who've done great things to know they prefer an acoustic that's kind of bottom-light as opposed to bottom-heavy like my ears prefer, less work for them. This does sound Gibson, if you know what I mean. And now, listening more closely to let's say Pete Townshend on a J200, I have to admit that I more clearly hear what maple does. A learning process. This guitar does what I'm hearing elsewhere, so I get it. Thanks again all. BTW do you still have to link to pix hosts to post a picture here?
  13. Thanks...and see above, I did find a rosewood J185, no easy feat. But I kept this guitar as well so let's see where the road goes.
