The Midtown custom is a righteous git, I'd be hard pressed to trade mine for anything else.

The ES line was my first Gibson, and will likely be my last. Over the years, I've had most of what Gibson made.
From left, ES-345, 335,335,347,Original Lucille,333,330, 330cs and 339.

Options are few, cover it with lacquer / shellac stick (or other some such) get it refinished, or leave it alone. I'd leave it as is and chalk it up to a battle scar.

Are the pups original?
I've had mine maybe 10 years and is a 93 and some do not like the P100 noiseless pups. They ARE a tad weak, and maybe a bit thin, but that's what the volume and EQ section of the amp is for. I love mine, some hate them but for a bit of an uplift new P90's can open up a whole new dimension. The "Chromite" center block makes the 135 really light and comfortable.
The finish around the neck joint may at some point show stress but nothing functional. If you look at prices online and you can get it lower than some of the optimistic asking prices you will like it.

Gibson rarely re-issues discontinued gits especially those that are not "vintage" The Midtown was a rare example of a fairly recent model re-issue that bean counters saw the HUGE response to them discontinuing them.
Think to the longest term gits in their catalog, the 335, 330, 175. Just about every success story from them started with a single model, and as they gained traction they released variants.
I have a 137C and I think Gibson floated too many 135/137 models, colors and options at the same time diluting the audience. If they had picked ONE, it may have had time to gain a following and options could follow. Hey what do I know, they didn't ask me :-)
While no longer cheap, 135's and 137's are still out there in nice condition, many were closet queens.

The 135's and 137's were victims of narrow minded players who endlessly compare any new model to whatever their fave at the moment is, and never being open minded to judge a new model on its own merits. Then sales slow down, bean counters do their jobs and pull the plug on designs that were not allowed to gain traction.
Too many players hear with their eyes 😉

Fear death? I guess I do not... I ride my crotch rocket in the rain while the Silverado stays home and is mainly used for shopping :-)
I'm riding some 57 years, never been hit or down. I feel safer on a powerful bike than in a car. Sure, there's always that car with your name on the bumper that runs a red or stop sign, but if it happens it won't be my fault, that is unless I get seduced by the dark side and buy a twin.
At any rate, the more religious have somewhere to go, I'm not certain of that but I'm hopeful they're right. If wrong no harm done to me after I'm gone :-) I can't fear what I cannot know of so I live and remain not fearful. Hey we buy insurance and make wills no?

Yup, IMO the correct number of frets to the heel for a DC hollow or semi :-)
The standard neck 330 feels more like a LP , but I prefer the 335 neck which makes the "L" feel right at home in my hands. My HB equipped 330 feels cramped.

Many / most players I know who had tuning issues were either not stringing them well, or a simple pencil lead application fixed it. After 55 years of owning, playing, and dealing with friends gits that's a bunch of problems easily solved without going "big hammer" on the problem.

In general, the pups in both are righteous depending on your preferences, I like my custom quite a bit and for my purposes prefer the custom.
Something else, the same price uplift generally applies to LP standard and custom models, but LP custom models are very available. If "rarity" and the visual appointments float your boat, then the custom is worth the buckazoids.

I have a 2018 339 and if one plays and sound better for you that's the desirable one :-) If you can't play either, then get the one that ticks the most visual boxes.

Wow! I never read a form that gave the options divorced AND single. It's none of anyone's business who is divorced!
I was resolute in the decision I made before the ink was put to the decree / paper work, I was single before the ink dried, and I never looked back.
I pray for her, but with a head full of angry cats I doubt it will have any effect :-)

I think mine gained an ounce for every year that this was originally posted in 2010. Jeez that added 10 ounces to my 8lb.6oz. 335. :-)

Sorry, I'm not fussy about neck profiles, and don't follow some descriptions. The "slim taper" and "baseball bat" I get but between them isn't extreme, and I feel comfortable with them.

I have and have had more than a few 335's, one of my current 335's is a black 1990 with Bill Lawrence pups (PCB type) is pretty much the 335 I now judge others against.

The question I gotta ask is why would anyone remove them?
Several sellers on Ebay sell complete part sets from bodies they stripped and sell separately, Also some players buy to completely customize them. Maybe someone bought them to restore a beat up one or update a well used 330 sample?
I once got a LP recording set of electronics stuffed in a SF twin on trade. I thought "who the hell would do that" maybe the git a cracked neck or other serious problem?

Well, as a departure from those thoughts, I have bought as recently as 2018 some Gibsons that only a blind inspector could have called a "first quality" git.

I do not own a 335 studio but do have a LP-ES studio and I like it as much as the much "better" standard model, in face with the 57's in it I like the sound better than my standard with MHS which are rather shrill.
The "studio" models I have played are easily as good as a standard 335 but with less bling, and they are much like the ES-333 which I have and like a LOT.

They likely do not destroy "seconds" they probably send them to a big box store (like CME on Reverb , Stratosphere or Gibsondependable on Ebay) and sell them as "demo", used, open box or floor models. I know, I bought a couple which were so bad they should have been crushed.
When they destroy them, they likely do it because they're not selling that model or taking a tax loss / write off makes better business sense.
In the distant past when I had an opportunity to see a brand new or recently purchased "second" it was because it had some finish flaw.
