  2. I was just thinking about this before you posted. I think this might be it. When I think about it maybe the strip didn’t fall all the way out which would imply it was attached on one end. The pickup still works too. Having just restrung with expensive strings I don’t want to mess about with it and risk string kinks so I’ll look properly at time of next restring. I’ve owned from new and it’s only ever been handled by pro guitar techs so I doubt it’s botched job but I guess that’s also possible. It does seem an odd thing to have blocking contact between saddle and bridge. If it is the pickup element, it makes me wonder what effect it’s having on acoustic sound. Thanks guys.
  3. Mine is certainly not rosewood, it is some sort of fabric and not glued to the saddle but loose in the slot.
  4. So this piece of material doesn’t come stock with a Gibson Acoustic, it was added later? I would have thought there should be hard contact between saddle and slot, rather than fabric.
  5. Looking for advice please. Changing my hummingbird strings today and the saddle fell out as it sometimes does but along with it came a thin strip of fabric, brown in colour, which has been sitting under the saddle. Is this a stock feature or has it been added by the last guitar tech that set it up?
  6. I know what you mean. I have a Martin 000-18 too.... quite different tones and playing feel. More bass from the 'bird as would be expected and the trebles are crisper/ dryer. The Martin is probably a bit warmer but not so good loudly strummed. The bird has just had its first new set of strings on today and what a difference that made too! A big increase in volume and clarity.

I couldn't turn her down. Nice quartersawn, bookmatched top and evenly applied burst. Mellow and vocal tone....I'm sure it'll open out and get even better over the next few weeks/ months/ years!
  8. Respectfully though, the weak link in that chain is the cheap solid state practice amp. Difficult to judge anything using that.
  9. £2500 for the new 2013 R8 above (especially good as its a limited edition run). It's still a very expensive guitar no doubt, as are all Gibsons these days. UK rrp for a 2015 USA standard is also £2500 so its a complete no brainer, especially given all the nasty "accoutrements" on this years USA models! Most online dealers I contacted were willing to get into that ballpark for their remaining 2013 R8's and not much more for 2014 models. Get 'em while you still can folks!
  10. Thanks chaps. I know the dark burst doesn't float everyone's boat but I love it. Had it a few days now. Definitely a keeper so I've installed strap locks. The custombuckers are very responsive to riding the volume controls. Not sure if that's mainly thanks to the pickups or the "bumblebee" capacitors or whatever. I tend to go over new guitars with a very critical eye and this one really proves to me that "going custom" is worth it for a step up in fit and finish. The quality of the fret/ binding/ nib work in particular is excellent. Theres no way I'd have paid the same price for a USA standard with all the 2015 "upgrades", yet prices are currently very close between R8s and USA standards.... I suspect there will be an increase in custom shop prices in the near future....
  11. I think you're *obfuscating the argument with your impressive vocabulary! Glad we're in agreement! As it happens, I took the local shop up on their "we'll order you're guitar in" offer when I bought a strat a few years ago. The guitar that arrived (already paid for!!) was as pot luck as ordering unseen online. In hindsight there really was no advantage other than helping out the local shop. Now they know my name and budget they are better informed when they sidetrack my attempts at "guitar talk" to lead me towards some slow selling wall hanger to extole its virtues!

I'd also add that most of the best guitar advice I get comes from the local tech himself...although he works in the shop basement he is independent and none of his advice has an agenda or is aimed at clearing units. Even the friendliest, most genuine local shop workers/ salesmen are all out to shift slow selling stock and improve margins yadda yadda. There is far more impartial advice available online and in magazine/ website review articles.
  14. True in some regards. Although I'd argue that there are some elements of service required, ie good email and telephone communication/ advice and good returns policy buying online too. Indeed, if you want to try a guitar out with all your own equipment in the comfort of your own home buying online might even be better given the no quibbles returns policies offered by distance sellers. Advice is variable shop to shop. Agreed good advice is worth a lot but not IMO hundreds of pounds/dollars. Small shops aren't charities- they're trying to run a profitable business too and in my experience local "advice" is often far from unbiased or without agenda. Repairs I'll give you. Many guitar techs are based in shop basements and it would be a travesty to lose them locally. I can't imagine having to ship a guitar of somewhere to a manufacturer in the absense of a local tech.
  15. The Perry burst is lightly figured. See BOTB p 58-59...author describes it as "mild flame appearance". The photo at the bottom is a plain top but its not the Perry burst. I just added for comparison as its very dark too and the grain is similar to mine.
