  1. Hi all, just starting noticing that the southern Jumbo doesn't stay in tune as I play up the neck. In other words, the open B string is in tune but as I play say a D chord and it sounds off so when I played a D on the b string it was sharp. My other guitars don't do this is there a common diagnosis/fix for this?
  2. Southern Jumbo? I know they don't seem as popular as the others but the older versions seem to be amazing iconic models
  3. That's distressing to hear, that's what I put on!
  4. After going around the horn and trying and mostly loving the different strings on my Southern Jumbo I found the mediums currently on it too hard to do any blues fingerpicking I'm trying to learn, so I pulled out the package of Gibson strings they came with (lights) and they sounded fantastic.
  5. I played a J 45 walnut one time and it sounded awesome, great clarity and punch, not muted at all.
  6. I have a Westerly JF 30- bought it used. I love that guitar
  7. My guitars Southern Jumbo 2018 Martin HD 28 VTS (baked top) 2017 Guild JF 30 1992 I was learning bluegrass and now learning blues fingerpicking, trying to pick up some Etta Baker tunes from my teacher
  8. It's such a contrast to my Southern Jumbo I'm appreciating that more too
  9. So what's the difference in sound between the two maples?
  10. A couple of months ago I wandered into a guitar store in Seattle that had this 1992 Guild JF 30 Maple. I had been wanting a Maple and the Gibsons were pricey. Besides being dusty it was in great shape and is just a fantastic guitar, it's easy to play and sounds wonderful. I put John Pearse bluegrass on them.
  11. That store is about three miles from my house
  12. I have mediums on my newly acquired guild JF 30 Maple, southern Jumbo, and Martin HD 28 VTS and they sound great on all of them. I like lights too though.
  13. Why don't people use mediums anymore? Just asking
  14. It probably is for some people but it seems really easy to play for me. I'm strumming and finger picking blues stuff but truth be told so far it seems like a great all around guitar. I've tried some flatpicking and it sounds just as good. First Maple guitar too and I can tell the difference
  15. Hi all, just got a Guild JF-30 Maple from about 1993. Love this guitar, a great complement to my Southern Jumbo.
  16. This guy by the way, James James, gives great video guitar lessons.
  17. Just got the saddle and nut on my j45 custom replaced with bone, sounds really pretty and clear, now looking for the right strings!
  18. I'll repost my question in this thread. I have a J45 Custom/Rosewood. I was wondering what other owners of this fine guitar used for strings and why. I am learning (or trying to learn) bluegrass flat picking. Thanks in advance.
  19. I live in Seattle and approaching 50. I had a takamine I got in 1980 until two years ago I bought a Martin D28, but was always intrigued by Gibson's and two months ago I traded in the takamine and got a j45 custom with the fleur de lis. I just love that guitar, but I love the Martin too. I'm not good, but I'm good enough to enjoy myself and my kids don't yell at me for practicing anymore. My proudest achievement was playing "mood for a day" by Yes enough to recognize the tune, now I'm learning fingerprinting blues and the j45 custom is great for it.
