  1. Some great videos in this thread. I'll add another classic from the 60's, pared down and played by the fire.
  2. That's a great comparison of a couple of really nice sounding guitars. My favorite was whichever was being played at that particular moment. This video should make anyone paying attention feel really good about what Gibson has been doing in recent years. The company may still have a few quirks, but they are building guitars that do the brand proud. Ian Meadows does a fantastic job producing these videos. I am not aware of anyone out there doing better online comparisons and reviews. Does anybody here know what the first song in that video is?
  3. That should be a great addition. Is it a 2014? I love the specs on that run.
  4. Looks like a GREAT guitar. Congratulations! I haven't heard of that exact model either, but here is a link to one on a Wildwood demo from a few years back. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w2nr9Uc43tw
  5. That should be a great guitar, JC. Good luck with the patiently waiting thing...
  6. Welcome and congrats on the new guitar. Strings I like and use most regularly on my guitars are Martin PB,'s, D'Addario EJ16's and Gibson Masterbuilt lights (until my stash runs out, as they are no longer being made). I have a small body non-Gibson that I use John Pearse 600L's on. But, as Sgt. Pepper said above, "try them all", until something resonates with you. There are a zillion choices out there and it is definitely a personal thing. Post some pic's of that new guitar.
  7. Thanks, JC. I enjoy Gibson's quirks. It makes them seem genuine and a little more hands on. And perhaps less corporate than other brands building automated clones that come off assembly lines by the tens of thousands.
  8. Thanks, Nick. I know you have a keen eye when it comes to guitars, so your comments are appreciated.
  9. Sure enough , Fred. We have the same headstock inlays. The 2015 run was 65 guitars. I wonder how many of them ended up with the pearl and crown logos? No way to know, I suppose. Not that it matters much anyway.
  10. Really nice, Lars. The firestripe pickguard is a nice touch. In true Gibson fashion when mine was built they ignored the specs and used the post war style logo and crown pearl headstock inlay instead of the gold script and banner like yours.
  11. Congrats, Huley. I think you made a great choice in going with the J-45 Vintage. I think you'll find it a great fit for what you are doing. Be sure to post some pics when it arrives.
  12. Great post, Juan. That's the best demo of a Sheryl Crow SJ I have seen. I have a 2015 model that will hopefully be with me to the end. I'm still grateful to 'thegreatgumbino' for posting a link to it when it was for sale up in Missoula at Greg Boyd's House of Fine Instruments. Here is a link to the 2015 Gibson specs: https://web.archive.org/web/20150816030102/http://www.gibson.com/Products/Acoustic-Instruments/2016/Sheryl-Crow-Southern-Jumbo-Supreme.aspx
  13. One other thing to be aware of with the J-45 Vintage as compared to a J-45 Standard is that it has a round profile neck. It will be feel thicker and fuller in your fretting hand than the Standard's slim taper profile. Some people like the vintage style round profiles and some prefer the more modern feel of slim tapers. And some people don't have a preference at all. I'm not sure about the 60's Reissue Hummingbird, but I would think it likely has a round profile too.
  14. Pretty sure it's Sinead Burgess from Nashvile
  15. Not sure if Australian born singer/songwriter Sinead Burgess has been discussed here before. If so, my apologies. If not , check her out at this link. Nice playing, nice vocals, and a nice sounding little LG. She has a number of recordings and videos out there and seems to favor Gibson acoustics of all shapes and sizes.
  16. I voted tight. If choosing between two otherwise equal guitars, I 'd go with a tight grained top over a wide grained one all day long. To my eye there is nothing like tight grained spruce with a little silking. I have nice sounding guitars with both wide and tight grained Spruce tops, and the two that sound best to my ear are both tight grained. But in all honesty, I don't believe grain width has much to do with sound quality. There are many other build factors with greater influence on tone.
  17. Mine was an Airline from Montgomery Ward in '65. I was hoping for an electric, but an acoustic showed up under the Christmas tree that year. I have no idea what model was and I'm not even sure what happened to it after I upgraded (?) to a Conn a couple of years later.
  18. Congrats, man. That looks like a great guitar!
  19. A couple of great young ambassadors for Preston Thompson guitars
  20. Truefire is the best I've found for online instruction. There is a ton of content on just about every genre, beginner through advanced. Instructors are top notch. Welcome to the forum.

    Fret Question

Thanks for all the responses to my question about the 2011 LP fret size. Yes, the issue is definitely caused from applying too much pressure between frets. I'm an older guy (mid 60's) with some stiffness and flexibility issues in my hands and fingers. I've had four surgical procedures on my hands and I'm thinking that dropping down to Medium Jumbo frets with a height of .036" might help me out.

    Fret Question

Thanks. Medium Jumbos might work better for me.

    Fret Question

Does anyone know what size frets were used on a 2011 (08) Les Paul Standard? I had one until recently and I tended to pull notes sharp while fretting in certain situations. Would like to know what size frets were used as a reference going forward. Thanks!
