When i joined this forum and posted my question, i had no idea whether anyhone would reply, so I made my post as brief as possible. Since then, I've been so impressed with the number and quality of responses,  i feel more confident that i can add some back story. My brother is the previous owner. He died, and his widow (my sister-in-law) gave it to me and told me she knows Bill would have wanted me to  have it. I treasured it, of course, and played it now and then as part of grieving, but my main guitar was always my old '59 D28. Skip a few years and i got cancer and the 2 years of treatments almost killed me. My muscles were reduced to near zero and i couldn't even press down a chord, but one day, i picked up Bill's old Gibson and found its action very friendly to my hands, and the sound - even with decades-old strings - rang sweet and clear. It was like coming home (or something). This guitar eased me back into playing and i wrote/recorded an album on it. It's been a few years now and i'm still enjoying the feel and the sound, changing the strings as little as possible.  The longer i live with this " haunted" guitar, the more i wonder about the WHOLE story behind it. All i know is that Bill didn't buy it new. And he's not around to tell me anything about where or when he got it, what he did to it, etc.  It's a kind of tantalizing mystery to me. And i'm ok with not knowing certain things for sure, but it's heartening to know that others are interested and willing to help me with some probing, and to share insights. Please know, it means the world to me! Thanks!!! ❤️

What a great story. So glad your health is better,

Guitars are magical and they connect us with the living and the dead.

  3. I agree that this is probably a ‘67 that someone replaced out the adjustable bridge with a “traditional” bridge. Also as has been stated, the original Pickguard has been replaced (should be the bat wing). Hard to tell if it is a stripped J-45 or a J-50.

    I’ll bet it sounds great!

Also as an aside to the OP, I am a fan of your work.

One of our members here snagged Iris Roy Smeck #1.  I gather he custom ordered the guitar resulting in the model going into regular production.   He has shared some clips of him playing it with me so hopefully he will chime in.

    And I like the headstock.

  5. Hey Folks!

With little to no gigging for the past year I have been releasing a Single A Month recording  with a lo-fi iPhone with a Rode MicMe plugged into it.  I then get it Mastered at a studio here in New Orleans.

This song was recorded with the ‘48 J-50 Body/‘38 L-00 neck.

You do not need to download to listen to the whole song. I hope everyone is well!

Definitely prefer the dread, which actually sound very promising for a new guitar. Are they torrefied, did they tell.

There is no mention anywhere in the two videos of torrefication, which leads me to believe the answer is no, but it will interesting to see the detailed specs when they are released by Music Villa.  👍

What I did find intriguing is the back bracing on that New Yorker-esque guitar.  Starts off as a thinner flat V and looks to get progressively thicker moving to a half round and then a full round carve at the butt end.  This is a kind of a take of a really old school Martin design.

Yes, the New Yorker inspired model is interesting to me as well. Here is the first one.

This one has Brazilian Rosewood B/S 😳💰💰💰💰
From the video it sounded like regular offerings will have either Koa or Spalted Maple. I guess for bigger bucks one could ask for different woods for a Custom Build.

The action seems quite high (Bout 2.6mm/2.0mm at 12th)

Yeah, that action is really high IMHO. I lean towards 2.00mm/1.7mm, but everyone is different.

If the tone is a problem for you, then that IS a problem. Maybe get the set up and play it for a while to see how you are feeling about it?

However, If you feel that the tone is something you cannot abide, then skip the set up and return it.

We had a good friend pass away last month.  He was a former cop who had been a stalwart on the local music scene since the early-1970s.   So his friends decided we needed to do something for him.  A member of the Village Council arranged for the use of a small park with a bandstand.  All acoustic with two bass players, a percussionist, a harp player and six guitars.  No practice beforehand or setlist, just songs our friend liked to play so  "Outside Woman Blues", "Wild Horses" a blues shuffle in A which  turned into a slow moving "Carol" when somebody started singing the lyrics, and such.  Lots of stories.  No tears but a whole lot of smiling.    It was particularly fitting when a cop hit his lights and siren just as he was passing the park to snag a speeder.   Anyway, a perfect way to say goodbye to a friend and a reminder he would never be forgotten.

    Nice send off, ZW
