  1. Ive heard the same, I haven't played one, supposedly a .800-.875 profile which would be similar to the D Trucks model or the 30-60 339, a soft D shape. The pickups are 490s with a 498 I imagine? Pretty cool SG though.
  2. And Mary never said a bad word about the guitar? I mean I don't know? http://www.guitarworld.com/mary-ford-and-les-pauls-1961-gibson-sg-sells-90k-pawn-stars
  3. Tom the Les Paul argument, not very good imho. Just saying, I can't qualify that. Listen if he played a 59 or 58 or 54 55 56 or 57 LP then I think you might have a point that Les for some reason blah, blah, blah the SG. But the truth is he played what a 72 recording? I mean come on how do you qualify all that in relation to the SG?
  4. Tom you seen the 67 and 92-RI Custom SG? Petty cool also. https://www.gbase.com/gear/gibson-1967-reissue-sg-custom-1992-cherry No blend though.
  5. I was watching her with the BK also. You know whats kinda odd about the whole guitar fascination. I always thought one day I would buy and own a 61 LP Custom RI. Might be a "yet", don't know, but for sure I always liked that piece. After listening to Hendrix rock it I like it even slightly more.
  6. He's waiting for the new Captain model scheduled for 2017 with an ebony board and a few other goodies figured to be added!!!
  7. Same SG he played on **** Cavett. Safe to say he rocked it a bit. The LP I have seen him with also, thats rare indeed. Here's Mama Rosetta Tharpe a fine SG-3 addition too. https://youtu.be/SR2gR6SZC2M
  8. Well good luck with the guitars. I don't know much of Gibson returning emails, they use to be real good a year or so ago but I haven't had a cause to email them of late. Was a spanish fellow named Manny I think who I spoke to many times, quick response no issue, nice guy. Maybe he retired and someone new is there. No idea.
  9. Maybe its you I was down NH and it didn't happen to me. Just came from there I know Jeff and Billy a looonng time. Jeff is one the better techs in the state. Billy been playing 50 years out. Maybe you have some extra body protons or electrons, possibly radioactive, did you get a checkout at the DR? Only joking Wheres Cap at he has to know something about this. I think its just the difference in the Gibson pups and for example the Epi. Better guitars do that!
  10. I don't dislike them, its more of a whole package thing for me with 2015 they went a bit far imho. I also don't see where they are better than a bone nut. I've played the roller nuts with Strats and if you have to go through this for example..... "HOWEVER... a few guys on here who got a 2015 had replacement chrome plated nuts sent to them which apparently fixed the issue... but really who wants to have to go through all that nonsense when you buy an expensive item like a Les Paul...: Which also brings into question adjustment as once correctly adjusted the bone is "done" which means its suggested the brass is easier to adjust. That isn't so imho, and the trem issue is non sequitur to me, I prefer the tone of the bone and looks and play ability. Which to me I agree with above.............. "they have been around a very long time, why did they ignore extensively testing the wear characteristics prior to shipping? how well did the childish Les Paul signature received by the buying public, everyone seems to dislike it but they went ahead with it anyway...." Which mystified me, I think the nuts should be designed effectively and sold like Fender as an additional part. How many would play one then?
  11. Yup, pretty much. If I had any complaint about their Blue finishes, I like a natural back and neck better then a dark blue finish but thats a small thing.
  12. Tommy Castro https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e4m9puPuXfI
  13. That the Standard you just picked up? Nice top on this one.
  14. Try out a few sets before you buy the Lollars. You may just want a more aggressive pick-up like the 57-57 plus. many of Alinco II can be considered bright. Same with Seths also BB 1 and 2 and 3. Or even Alnico Vs with the BB-Pro. Really is a matter of landing on that sweet spot for yourself. Many like the DiMarzio Anniversary also. I haven't heard the Lollars, I heard his P-90s but thats different. I haven't heard much about the Imperials which is what your talking about?
  15. 2014 Ocean Blue Traditional is my favorite Les Paul. Nothing I don't like about it. In a word "perfect". Did you see it????
  16. The joint angle is a plus or minus .005 which is different from the Custom Shop which is a closer tolerance. Creates the lift on the Stop-Tail with the break angle to various degrees. The left to right probably has a similar acceptable tolerance which is why some pull off the high E also. Personally I think Gibson should correct the problem as it would seem more cost effective imho.
  17. The 59s just have a different voice through low, mid and high range. I've been bouncing back and forth between the 57-57+ and the 59s. Lower output for sure, but the treble tone is just different. Its more of a hollow twangy Gretsch tone. The 57 mids are loose compared to the 59s and the lows are somewhat similar though the 59s have a slightly more percussive tighter sound. I think they are a interesting middle ground between the BB-1 and 3 and the 57-57+ I was fooling with a looper and tracked both neck tones and both bridge. The 59s came though clearer than the 57s which while I was playing didn't seem to be so. But after standing back and listening to the 4- loops with the same music. The 59s are an interesting alternative or flavor if you will. Filtertron/modern Alinco II PAF cross comes to mind also. I don't know I kinda like both sets at the moment. I'm still investigating but am having a good time with the 59s at the moment. I'd like to hear them A/B'd with the Dimarzio 36ths. Or even his PAF Joes with that "aw" sound in the treble strings. I don't know that they are bright though, when I think of PAF bright I think Seth Lovers. Being that this comparison stuff is so subjective I will have to reserve my overall opinion on the 59s.
  18. Thanks, just a hair brighter than the Gold-Top. Completely addicted to them and the 57-57+ combination. The Pro while I hear various thinking on the electronics, I like the boost and split coils. I like the locking tuners on it also.
  19. Here's the Traditional's Chicago Blue and a Gold-Top Pro II. Just killer sounding LPs, I can't really review them since I just set up the Blue and haven't really A/B'd them for any period of time. That said they are very similar in tone and feel. Both are 9 and 9.1 lbs. The Blue 50 neck has a slightly thicker feel to it. The solid bodies with the 50 necks just really do it for me. I really dig the warmth with them and I like the 57-57+.
  20. That's the thinner neck guitars which you are comparing though, surely not all? Well, I guess it depends on what you mean by thinner in relation. I like larger necks 50-profile Gibson's, Oval or large C, boat, Fenders. Nevertheless I have played 60 profile and modern C Fenders which worked in some case's better than the larger. Doesn't change my own preference, but my preference doesn't change the reality of the very good playing and sounding 60 necks I've played either. 60 necks are popular for sure.
  21. Yes the looks of the Western Maple is often where you see the highly figured "quilted" tops. So its another tell-tale sign of Western maple. Looks vs tone, not really, more Eastern vs Western. Selected timbers don't equate to tone. They equate to color shading, grain, figuring, none of which equates to tone. Ash is another story, Northern Ash as opposed to Swamp Ash of the south. There's no comparison in tone. The Southern Ash is hands down a better tone wood. Northern Ash is a filler just like the Western Maple is. I like Southern Ash and my Strat is Ash and 5.5 lbs. But, it doesn't sustain better than other woods from what I hear.
  22. Eastern Hard Rock Maple cannot be bought in large enough supplies to build all Gibson LP-Tops so they use "Western" maple also. Yes it does sound better and was once used on "all" 59RIs and Custom Shop. Right the pick-ups don't change wood or resonance, they do change "tone". Thus one pick-up may sound better than another to some. May have "zip" to do with the guitar overall. The Maple is a very different story. Mineral deposits/veins is a tell tale sign of Eastern Maple. The weight relief is equal to me, for example, like a Strat or SG with a batwing pick-guard. There's a slightly different nuance in tone do to the different acoustic structure. Same difference between 2012 and 2013 SG Standard. Or a Strat with a swimming pool route as opposed to vintage routing. The weight has nothing to do with it IMHO. Think acoustics, same if you pulled the rear plate off a chambered LP-DC or left it on. For sure it will have a different tonal characteristic. At least to my ears.
