  1. I feel we've had more, better closure on this issue than when it first came up a few months ago. We can all make our own, better informed, decisions now on whether rough bridge pin holes warrant a trip to a luthier, and whether a locator hole is structurally unsound. Since most seem to have been plugged at the factory - it makes the decision a little easier for those folks. I wish you all who have legitimate issues the best. Jim

    Agreed

  2. When I showed the J-15 (Lisa) to the tech (Doctor) at GC, he said that he had seen this on several guitars (he didn't mention any brands), and that he had never seen any issues caused by it. As I said before, I'm satisfied with the answer, and knowing its solid maple I'm not going to worry about it. I'm just going to play on and someday add a J-45 to my stable and anything else that has a "J" in it [biggrin]

  3. Randmo has only been playing for 3 months as I understand it, so may not have changed strings as much as some folks here. No offense intended, of course, we were all newbies at one time or another.

Not offended at all... This is all new to me. My eyesight is not the greatest either [mellow]

While I was at GC, I looked at another J-15, I didn't like the looks or sound, you would have a hard time prying mine away from me, bridge plate and all.

  4. Is it best take the back off with a saw, or should I use a blowtorch to melt the glue?

I loosened the strings and stuck my iPhone in there. You could probably put the phone in sideways and turn it once it's below the strings, I haven't tried it yet. I suppose if you drop the phone, then you will need to open up the back. [biggrin]

  5. I'm with smurf here.

I'd be bothered about that string twisting out of position.

and I'm one of the less fussy people in here.

Am a bit amazed that gibson say it's fine. It's obviously not fine.

I agree, I paid a lot of money for this. I got the email from Gibson today which I felt they were telling me I installed the strings wrong. I'll admit I'm very new at this, but look at my previous pictures of my Yamaha FG700S, I didn't know what I was doing then either, but they look fine.

From this and the February thread it seems this is a common problem... I don't know what to think anymore. I love the guitar yet I think I'm a little disappointed considering its cost.

I would be comfortable with a repair, I don't want a new guitar.

  6. Randmo,

But you've clearly stated to us that the string is out of position because it naturally goes to that odd position! If I were you, I'd keep good records of this purchase and good track of that bridge to make sure there aren't problems down the road.

I'm not clear if you have a policy to have GC fix it and if you do what does that do to the Gibson warranty... someone else, please chime in.

If you love the guitar, I agree with no messing with success. But at the first sign of a real issue, I'd be adamant that someone at Gibson take care of this.

I have the Guitar Center warranty, that's why I'm not real concerned. I haven't had a problem with it, mainly it's just the point, I was (am) mainly concerned about long term effects.

  7. Took the J-15 to guitar center, it would be covered under my Pro Warranty if it were causing issues, I wasn't going to raise a big stink, so I went to Sam Ash just for another opinion, they seemed to feel the same way. Gibson says it's normal, so I guess I'm going to live with it. I have only been playing for 3 months, so I don't have the background to argue, except the way it looks.

BTW while I was at GC I looked at the J-15 they had in stock, I didn't care for the color of the fretboard or back. I didn't have a mirror to look inside. But I never would have bought based on looks, I love mine and I'm keeping it.

  8. How is that centre left string sitting the way it is? Doesn't look like the string is in the pin channel

I've had it out 3 times and it keeps going off to the side, got tired of messing with it, probably will take it to dealer and start there. Notice also that the pins don't look like the are all the way down, maybe the bridge is thicker in those areas?

  9. Called Gibson, I was on hold for a half hour and gave up, sitting on hold now for the last 25 minutes. In the meantime I submitted a request online, but haven't heard back....

This could take a while, but I do have the Pro Warranty from Guitar Center which should cover it.

Maybe they aren't answering because they know its me... [biggrin]

  10. The bridge plate on my J-15 is not as splintered as Randmos from drilling & I am comfortable with the string seating, but it will always need to be checked when strings are changed.

I tried to reinstall the string 3 times and it always ended up as pictured. I will call Gibson today.

  11. Oh, this will be an easy one to explain away….just wait……and look at that rough drilling at the pin holes…….wow!

Looks like they used a dull bit... I'll be very curious to hear what duluthdan finds out. In the meantime I'm thinking of contacting gibson myself... Too much money invested in this thing.

  12. I'm very new at this... only started about a month ago. I have a Yamaha FG700S which I put Elixir Nanoweb Phosphor Bronze, I like the way they felt and sounded on the Yamaha. I just got a J-15 last week and the store put new D'Addario strings, I'm not sure which.

What does everyone think would be a good string for the J-15?

I have gibson 80/20s on now, doesn't seem to have the same volume as the d'addarios. I bought a set of elixir 80/20s poly web and martin 80/20s, I will be trying those in the next few weeks. I also have a set of elixir phosphor bronze nano webs but they are 11 gauge, might try them anyway.

  13. Hi Forum,

Richard from Sussex in the UK here... happy new owner of the lovely J-45 custom below. I have used a 1970's vintage Sigma DR7 for writing and recording for many years, but finally got the Gibson I always wanted. I love equally the different sounds of both the mahogany and rosewood models, so in the end when choosing, maybe got seduced by the custom's lovely herringbone binding and head-stock inlay!

On the electric side I have a USA Telecaster and my favourite, a 1981 black ES-347 beauty which I got used some 8 years or so ago. Great to be here and read people's posts!
