I turned 15 in October of that year. At that point in my life I had been to 2 concerts Cheap Trick and Pat Travers on the same bill and Rush and a Canadian group called FM that opened. That summer in New Jersey I saw Styx with my cousin. The day before I turned 15 I saw The Rolling Stones in Candlestick Park.

Never saw the Stones, and never cared for Styx, which I referred to as(and including that other group too) REO Styxwagon.  [wink]  And by the time I was 30 my concerts  leaned more towards Fusion and Detroit Symphony performances.  The first concert I saw was Jimi Hendrix opened by Soft Machine and The MC-5 in '68.

  2. Although I did like the Kinks, it was only just a few tunes of theirs, not enough to invest in any vinyl beyond the scant 45s I bought in the '60's.   In later years my daughter was able to find the tunes I liked in her file sharing connections and put them onto a compilation disc , one of the many she put together for me.

He sang Par-Rum-Pa-Pum-Pum with Bowie. He has a great distinct voice.

But, it wasn't Smith who sang with Bowie.  Or did you forget WHO this thread was about?

And FRETPLAY, Crosby probably didn't look too well in that clip because according to that clip the performance was in 1977, the same year Crosby died.

And sho' 'nuff Smith was an outstanding guitarist.  And I wouldn't mind having that D'Angelico he's pickin' in that first clip.  [wink]

  4. First, to KSDADDY:  I too, was with my wife when she passed Dec. '18.  I know that loss.

    And condolences too, for JVI.

And so, for a bit of levity----  I once read a plaque in a store that read:

"When I die I want to go like my grandfather... Peaceful, in his sleep.  Not screaming like the passengers in his car. "

And a story of three old men, one 75, the second 87, and the third, 96.........

The 75 year old said, "You know, when I die, I'd like it to be fast.  Like a plane crash or car accident."

The  87 year old said, "I agree.  But also painless, like in my sleep."

The 96 year old said, "You guys can have it your way.  I' rather be shot by a jealous husband."  [wink]

Personally, I'd rather go also in a quick but painless manner.  And many years from now.

  5. OK, here goes......

A young girl walks into a bank and drops a pillowcase full of nickels, dimes and quarters on the counter.  The shocked teller asks her, "Good heavens miss.  Did you hoard all this change?"   And the girl answered....

"Naw.  My sister whored half of it."

Oh, Thanks Sgt. Yeah, that didn't sound right to me "The Actor?"  I should have asked Deb first I guess? I have never watched Jimmy Fallon's show but Deb watches it all the time. I salute you sir! Oops, Wait, Forgot, never salute a Sergeant and never call him  sir,  Sergeants work for a living right? LOL

I don't care how cool the guitars the show's band's guitarist has are, I'm not submitting myself to the torture of Jimmy Fallon just to look at 'em.

Tone, Sarge?  Yeah, but it seems to me that Clapton( for instance) managed to get the same tone regardless of which guitar he was playing.     And RETIRED?

Don't feel bad about the actor confusion.  For all we know, the ACTOR Kirk Douglas did play guitar.  Many in that field have other artistic endeavors than just acting.  And talents too.

Actors Michael McKean  and Christopher Guest( who were  David St. Hubbins and Nigel Tufnel in "Spinal Tap" respectively), do actually play guitar and did much of their own playing in that movie.  Also in the mockumentary "A Mighty Wind".  Comic actors Eugene Levy and Rick Moranis do too.    Along with Groucho Marx.

Wasn't there a Rhubard Red guy?  Think he had a guitar named after him.

Kind of like the Lucile, I bought Les Pauls because of the features and the sound, not for the person's name on them.  What kid in the 70s ever heard a Les Paul album?  I know I didn't.

The one guitar I would like to get, but without the fake aging and stickers, is the Alvin Lee ES-335.

Maybe a Zappa Roxy SG but, once again, without the fake road wear.

Not a kid in the '70's, but among the many 78s my Mom had around the house was "How High The Moon" by Les Paul and Mary Ford.   So at least one kid in the '60's heard of him  [wink]  And by the end of the '60's was well aware of the guitar.

Yeah, I don't care for those "reliced" guitars, you know, with all that phony "aging" that makes fools think it makes it a better instrument.  In fact, I cringe a bit when I see some well paid artist sporting a guitar, electric or acoustic, that's been covered with writing by ball point pens or sharpies, and all kind of goofy stickers.   Like Mellencamp's.  Needs to be whacked upside his head for disrespecting an instrument like that.

I saw them when they were just The Dregs, and I saw Steve Morse about 3 or 4 times. Mark O'Connor was the guy on the fiddle at the time. It was the Industry Standard Tour. What a killer band.

Indeed.  But Allen Sloan was fiddlin' here.

    BoyDiesel...

I was touring in Germany many years ago and we pulled off of the autobahn to refuel....the van was regular petrol (gas for you yankee types) but I filled it with diesel....we broke down about 20 mins later and bingo...nickname was born.

We made the gig but had to setup while the support was playing...real pro job....

    \:D/

So, what kind of DOP were you smokin'?  [wink] (Name was a bit long, so the site dropped the "e".  Looks  like WhitePunkOnDop)

Whitefang (not on dope anymore. )

  10. Must be great action on that axe as he's not picking most of those notes.   If he was it'd be more impressive.  That ability is what impresses me most about these guys...

    Steve Morse

    And of course, Johnny!

But the kid is somewhat impressive....

I stopped in a local GC yesterday and they had a used Collings I-35 priced around $4200 in their Platinum room hanging next to a 335. It was beautiful but was on a locking hanger and since I'm not in the market for a guitar in that price range right now, didn't ask to play it. I did take a good look at it and build quality was excellent. The Body is a bit smaller than the 335. It's red and at the Southfield, Michigan store if you are considering used.

And variety is the spice of life. I think many of the great's would agree and probably play/own many different brands and styles. Clapton, Hendrix, Bonamassa, etc., all have (or had) and play different guitars through their careers. While Bonamassa appears to prefer Les Pauls, I see him switching to 335's and Music Man's, etc. all the time. If I had the money, I'd have a guitar store full of different models and play them all!

I'm in the Detroit area( Lincoln Park, as you can see)  and there's a GC in neighboring Allen Park and over in Canton on Ford Rd., but where exactly is the Southfield store?

  12. Schmendrick?  Kvelling?

OY GEVALT!   It's enough to make me kvetch!    Sorry, couldn't resist.  Just funnin'  not meaning to be a schmedlap.    [wink]

Sure.  My wife used to call a grandnephew "monkey butt."   Not really meaning any  derogation. So I get your Mom.

I’ll have to ask. My Mom called me the former. Dad the latter.

You may not like this, but the "free dictionary" shows this...

    shmendrick (ˈʃmɛndrɪk)

    n. a stupid and ineffectual nobody. (Yiddish.)
    Can't figure out the other.
