  1. Ok I really didn’t expect this . Here’s a guy who has owned and sold 2 J45’s .one a TV . A Woody Guthrie Sj and an Advanced Jumbo. So a Gibson slope shoulder void for a few years brought me to a J35 I found used in a music store I frequent . Walked in with absolutely no intention of buying a guitar ,but there it was....
Played it for 30-40 mins and walked home with it .This was 6 months ago and my god I can’t believe how I’ve bonded with this instrument. What a great guitar this is . The percussive thump the slope Gibson’s are noted for with the loud resonant dry projection a mahogany Dreadnought is cherished for .
Call me happy, smitten and totally in love with my J35 .

  2. I’m liking the Martin Monels light gauge 12-54. They are actually called Retro, as the Tony Rice set are called Monels.

Sound vey percussive as they age . Gibson need to offer an alternative as it feels strange stringing my Gibson with Martin Stings . LOL

  3. Been using them on my J-35 since last summer. Love them. They take a day or two to settle in, but boy howdy, once they do, I really love the tone, volume and feel.

Finally put some Monels on my J-35. Martin Retro light gauge.

Day two and my impressions are very favourable. Nice percussive woody sound while still maintaining good note separation .

So, Phosphor Bronze were good. 80-20’s died way too soon . ( IMO) We’ll see how these Monel’s sound and feel after prolonged use.

  4. I thought the J-35 was an exceptional value, given both the construction and the period-correct details.

However, with two 1950 J-45's and a 1943 re-issue SJ in the stable, I've probably got the Gibson 'hog slope-J spectrum covered pretty well.

I suspect the J-35 was a loss leader for Gibson, and ended up eating into the J-45 standard market in a serious manner, since it was a lot less money for what is essentially the same guitar except for a few cosmetic things.

Very much agree with your last paragraph.

  5. Really enjoying my J-35 . I prefer the sound with strings that have been used a bit. 45-60 mins of playing or so. I’m also quite impressed with the wonderful projection obtained while finger picking, and crosspicking . [thumbup]

Went for a visit to my local Long & McQuade today and they had a used 2015 model . What jumped out at me was how nicely the spruce top has aged with a noticeable darker patina .Strings were deader than door nails but it played well and still sounded pretty good.

  6. I think like all good things it had to go at some point.

I bet the reason the J 15 is still around is because it’s all north american tonewoods.

Don Ruffato has stated multiple times that walnut is the way to go to keep pricing down for the end consumer. Mahogany and Rosewood are already getting harder to find.Maybe Gibson wants to save their mahogany for J 45’s and Hummingbirds.

There is definitely a move by many manufacturers to use sustainable woods in many of their guitars.

  7. Sad to hear Gibson has discontinued this model.

The craftsmanship on mine is fabulous. Beautifully silked spruce top and gorgeous mahogany back and sides. Great looking rosewood used on the neck and

bridge . And ....awesome sound and projection ( Subjective I know)

So my theory is they priced the instrument too low in their product line and weren’t making enough markup. [glare]

    What are your thoughts?

  8. I played about 5 and think they are a good guitar .They varied in tone and feel. One in particular impressed me immensely.

As mentioned they are not J-45's.

If you are gassing for a J-45 buy a J-45. This guitar certainly holds it's own for what it is.It's a well priced

    Gibson alternative to whats available.

I wish they would lose the "Banner Headstock Logo" though ,as it never applied to the original J-35's.
