  1. I bought a '61 reissue about 8 months ago and have some experience on the issues. These guitars are great but they are not like others and you need to learn how they work. 1) mine would always seem to go out of tune . I tried everything and after about 3 months of trying this and that and I finally figured out why. Always tune up to the note. I haven't had to remember that since I was a kid (not for 30 years now). This ain't no strat. If you tune down then you the headstock angle will cause some of the string between the nut and the tuner to be looser than the string between the nut an
  2. Hi Folks I got an SG re-issue about six months ago. I feel I needed to rework my whole technique because the neck tends to slide down a bit. I saw one sg where the guy drilled a new strap button behind the top horn. Every famous pro you see with an SG has the tail piece on it but they don't use it. So the question I have is, can I get one of those tail pieces on my 61 re-issue without major surgery? Do the tail piece holes I have now work? Looks like the Stetbar might work? Any experience with that?? Also someone sayd the Bigsby with the Vibramate can be done without mods.
  3. Hi Folks, I had been looking for a reasonably priced les paul for a while now but I had found that to get the right slimmer neck I had to pay for the higher end models. I really just needed a work horse, not a show piece so I kept looking. I finally found what I was looking for. A 1991 Studio with an ebony fretboard. It was in grimmy condition and had the tail piece replaced with a fine tunable monstrocity and also the tuners replaced. It was grimmy from top to bottom so I got a great deal and she cleaned up really well. I'm very happy because the neck seems slimmer on these older models
  4. Yes a gloss deep red finish. Single cutaway. I assume they are p90's - I have not taken them out to look. I Feels and sounds sublime. It has taken quite a bit of dings and bumps to the body so I would say it's in fair condition. It's road worn as they say (which some people pay extra for by the looks of today's sales catalogs). It has a tunomatic bridge so it's not a historical one. Somoene wants $750 for it. What do you think?
  5. Can any one tell me what a 2001 Les Paul Special sold for new? I just bought one and it's in rough condition but it feels and sounds WONDERFUL!
  6. Hi Folks I recently bought a VOX AC15cc1. It's a 15 watt amp that normally comes with a 12 " 30 watt speaker but mine has been replaced with a 12 " 60 watt celestion silver series v12-60. Other than the differences in general speaker sound, what difference does it make if you double the wattage of the speaker? Does it mean it can handle more power before it breaks up? I play an SG '61 reissue and the amp. I can turn the master volume all the way up and the pre amp volume to about 1/4 and get good compression. But I can't get a clean sound at small club gigging volume. One of the reasons I
  7. so what does it do when you play 5 watt head through 200 watt cab? Does it give you more clean at the higher volumes or does it break up at lower volumes?

  9. I'm lovin my new vox ac15 with my 61 reissue.
  10. Ok I'm going to get the nut looked at. Some of the grooves look like V more than a parallel line. But I did lubricate. Are you saying more wraps are worse? I've increased the wraps thinking it will help. There are 5+ wraps there probably more as the string thickness permit

    Tuning

I'm having a lot of problems getting my 63 re-issue to stay in tune. I bought it used and it was hardly played. I really tested it out the first 4 weeks and it was fine but I did not gig with it. Then when I finally did gig with it yesterday I just could not keep it in tune. It's like I don't even have to play it and if I check it it can be out of tune. Granted it was outside and it was wet out so I was playing on a carpet (which was on a tarp) so the humidity did not help I read an article about Eric Johnson recently. He was bragging about his SG. He said that every SG he ever played had
  12. I was using a leather strap but it was only about 3 inches wide. I got a much wider leather strap ( maybe 4 inches with rough hide on the underneath for more friction and that has helped quite a bit - problem is solved for the most part. I would love to see pictures of the instalation of that tremelo bar. No mods is what I'd like to get if I can find one that works well.
  13. How hard is it to replace the tailpiece of the '61 reissue and add the one with the silver cover? The reason I want to try this (if it doesn't alter the guitar much) is that I think it could use more weight back there to keep the neck from tipping.
  14. I recently bought a faded and loved it but after about 3 weeks the lack of filled wood on the neck did start to get to me and also the lack of finish did not work great when my hands would sweat. I started sticking to it. So I returned it within the alloted period and got one with a finished neck. It makes a difference.
