  1. My wife is from Europe, and we travel to and from often, in 2015 I tried the Hiscox pro II case ( I always take one guitar with me ) it has done the job and most of all I feel my guitar(s)

are secure. I now have 3 cases for my keepers. IMO you wont go wrong with a Hiscox. IMO

  2. Couldn't you just turn your pins so as the slots aren't being used?

Yes! But you would still need to address the bridge itself the string would need a place to rest.

If memory serves me,  someone once said they lost a pin ( un-slotted )while changing the strings and while ordering a new set

of new un-slotted pins they used their old slotted pin by just turning it until the correct pins arrived. Another plus

to this issue is Ive had slotted pins curl up on my guitars over the years ( not often but with cheap Martin pins ), that won't happen with un-slotted pins

  3.

"""I do this too,   Makes changing strings easier while also protecting the bridge plate.

    How's this """""

Im not a luthier but the ball ends of the string rest against the bottom of the pin and not against the bridge plate which can cause wear.

Not to hard to do oneself.  I did a couple of mine many years ago with no issues, I cant say the sound was different in anyway,

Are they A.A. pins?    It looks like your luthier did a very clean job,  IMO

Sorry,  looks like someone answered the question while I was typing!

  4. As someone suggested ask around for a vintage luthier as that is a very nice old guitar, and there are authorized repaired that

don't have the knowledge to make the correct repair, , as an example the last place you want to send a vintage Martin for repairs is the Martin factory repair shop.

Ask around I would suggest again as someone already stated you can start by going to used shop that carry used/vintage instruments

And good luck with that guitar.

I know that strap buttons are very useful, but its obvious that the stress fracture happened at the weakest point, IMO

Although I might add that sit on the "no to strap button side of the fence" and many other dont!!! Again good luck!

  5. Sal, my three go to guitars live in Hiscox Pro II for the money Ive not been able to come across a better all around case.

Ive not travel a lot in the last two years, but they have travelled internationally several times a years before that and it sure is nice

knowing I dont have to worry about may guitars,  without spending 1200.00  USD's on a case. Im really happy with them.

  6. OP,  I have a half dozen or so  guitars, the newest being thirty, year old  the finish on these guitars look as nice as any newer guitar ( maybe not brand new )

they have been used so their are dings and bumps ( normal wear ) and they have never had wax applied on them.  I always wiped them down after

using ( most important ) and when I cleaned them I used a damp cloth with warm water, and if their is a dirty spot or area I use and very small drop(s) of Naphtha.

this it and not more.  My guitars finish look as good as any of the other folks I jam and play together with, period. Im not suggesting anyone do the

same, but it works without applying all that waxes and stuff that builds up in the finish over years.  Again Im not suggesting anyone do the same

because I don't want anyone here throwing rocks at me or imforming me I mentally health. FWIW

  7. 1. What are the best strings to put on to try to achieve the same type of sound that Neil Young gets from his Martin D28. That is the type of music that I play.

    A.  It's really hard to compare apples to oranges.

    2. This is my first experience with a short scale guitar. I am wondering which frets are most impacted with shortened widths.

    A. I cant help you there, I don't understand the question.

My advice would be to leave your guitar alone IMO ( some people only dream of having a j-45 ) Play it for a few months let you both get used to each and then take it and

have a good setup by a good luthier, ( also over the years Ive changed from lights to mediums a few times without issues but all guitars are different)  And as far as NY goes he also

played a d-18 on some songs, your j-45 would be closer to that than a d-28 when trying to compare  IMHO.

**Im not a regular poster here but a fairly regular lurker,   Im a lover of most genre of music and good guitar brands  they all have their place , Ive been trying to play for over 30 years, I come here to learn more about Gibson acoustics ( I couldn't think of a better place to go ) so take my opinion with a grain of salt.

  8. I have three Hiscox cases they aren't Gibsons but all three fit as snug as a bug.  And I feel quite safe with my guitars stored in them,

I travel from the US to Europe with regularity and have never worried about my guitars. Cant say the same before I got them.  Of coarse

Calton and the like may provide even more security but I cant justify the price difference. IMO
