  1. Been interested in one of these for a while and one popped up on my radar. First impression - heavy and didn't ring/resonate (don't think it was dead strings). So, it started off with 2 strikes against it. I had played my epiphone ES-335 Pro a bit before going to the store give myself a baseline for comparison. The guitar also had a headstock repair (looked like maybe crack between fretboard and neck). And the neck volume pot would cut out when turning it up. Overall, too many strikes against it. Especially given the asking price. I didn't even ask if it had the case and papers with it. It was a later production number - think like 1300s (sunburst). Pickups sounded pretty decent although I didn't get a great feel cause I didn't turn it up in the store. And I wasn't overally impressed with the amp (blackstar JJN combo). To be fair ont he amp, I think it sounded decent at a loud playing level, but was junk at bedroom level. The 2W attenuator setting wasn't good at all (although I didn't spend much time on it). I flipped over to the 20watt setting right away and that seemed good when playing at a pretty loud level. And I can definitely see the blues power/OD sounding really good, but I just couldn't play that loud for long. The switching between the channels was very confusing though. I'd still like one of these guitars down the line, but I'm happy enough right now with the Epi 335 pro (still stock pickups although I've always intended to change them - they really aren't bad though), and Casino worn (orange CME color).
  2. Anybody know the difference between tobacco burst and autumn burst? I remember seeing a guy play with a Dove and I believe he said it was autumn burst and said it was a rare finish. Also, do your tobacco bursts have a burst on back or just a black back? I am thinking of picking a Dove up - what years would they have had a burst on back or just painted? Adam
  3. This is a great thread. It should be resurrected just for that alone. However, I have an additional question. I am going to drop a Gibson P94 neck and SD Antiquity bridge into a guitar. Specifically, I have an epiphone SG - pellham blue "LP custom" that I believe has the epi probuckers in it. I opened it up and it has the quick connect pickups (to the volume pots). I am going to take this whole assembly out, and replace it with the above mentioned pickups that are currently in a Squier John5 tele with a single knob configuration. Anything to add to/keep in mind with the P94/HB configuration? Not sure if the Antiquity is more sensitive/different for capacitor? Also, I do know the pickups as they run in the John5 are a great match - with the Antiquity almost being too bright. Having any tone knob will be good. Plus, I think having the standard 2 vol/2 tone configuraiton will help with blending as well.
