AndyK
I'm guessing there are a good few Marshall users on here. I've recently bought a TSL60 head and cab, after a long time away from Marshall. I'm finding that I seem to be getting a nicer sound by winding up the volume and keeping the gain low - sort of the opposite from the way I've been operating with my old Orange Rocker 30 for the past few years. What about you guys?
krock
Last time I played a JCM 2000 I used the crunch channel and liked the way it sounded boosted with a nice OD.
Guest Farnsbarns
I have the identical head on a 1960a. I completely agree that you get a lovely bark with high volume and low gain, especially just at the point of breaking up on the crunch channel. If your cab is new the speakers will open up in couple of weeks to a month, depending on how much use. When mine was new I left a loop pedal running through it all the time I was at work for three days. If you live somewhere you can do that then do. kidblast
I've got a JTM60 2x12 combo with a JTM 2x12 cab. while it is a combo, I'm running it with 4x12s, 2 open back, 2 closed back. all stock speakers, never changed em out. I don't usually have the gain set much past 12 / 1 o'clock. Depending on the pickups in the guitar of the moment, I'll even pull it back more. I use the guitar volume controls a lot... this is usually gives me all the control I need. Funny thing is, I used to try to dial in as much over the top gain as I possibly could find, a long long time ago.... this.. When mine was new I left a loop pedal running through it all the time I was at work for three days Farnsy,, This is brilliant,, it's another page in the "how to annoy my neighbors when I'm NOT home" book!! LOVE it! why didn't I Think of this???
Kennis
I've got one and I almost exclusively use the crunch channel.

I imagine anything as simple as a boss dd-3 could do it if you dont have a proper looper because it has infinite repeats
charlie brown
Well, from my past experience, with Marshall (My old "Major") I've always much preferred the cranked volume=natural overdrive, to anything "added." But, that's just me. I'm not a real "High Gain" kind of player, anyway. If I need that for some particular song, I just use a pedal. So, for me...I'd probably do much the same thing, you're doing, and "liking," with you new amp. I've always prefered Plexi, or DSL (at most) heads, regarding a Marshall. Cheers, CB
AndyK
I use the guitar volume controls a lot... this is usually gives me all the control I need. Yes, I hear you on that. I use my neck p/u on my Les Paul almost exclusively, set the max tone and volume, and then ajust the amp accordingly for the maximum drive I would ever want (for classic and modern rock). For certain songs I will reduce the p/u volume down to 8 or even 6 to reduce the overdrive. My bridge p/u I set at max volume, but cut the tone (to about 4) so it is tonally similar to the neck p/u, which obviously reduces the volume/drive. I can then use the bridge p/u with the lead channel for a more trebly/defined sound - especially suitable for "Always on the Run" by Kravitz (second guitar part). I do find having the three channels on the amp so useful - you can change from clean to lead in one stomp. (We've been working on "More than a Feeling", where you have to go from the clean verse to the hook lead line.)

turtle
I agree and have been a "master volume" guy forever! I own a few Marshalls and always use the gain low with the volume on around 3-4 o'clock. I own the dsl40 combo too an use the green channel(clean) with the gain for my level and The master almost cranked. Run this thing through a 4-12 it's brilliant! I love this amp for practice. I own a jcm800 a jtm handwired a clone and a few other smal tube amps. All one channel and that's the way uh huh uh huh I Like it!

bonzoboy
Hi Andy K,welcome back to the Marshall fold,I have 3 Marshalls a 1983 JCM 800,2204,a 1984 JCM 800,4210 and a 1971,2040 or Artiste-which was its model name- that's on long-term loan to my incredibly gifted nephew.I usually play with the amp clean and use an old Marshall Guv'nor for distortion but when I want natural overdrive I always set the gain on bust and use the master volume or volume-depending on which amp it is- to control the beast.
