mako shark
Tracked down a faded 3 pickup V at a good price recently. Nearly every thing about it is cool, but the finish (or lack of it) is awful to my eyes. The neck texture is starting to annoy me as well as i can feel it 'gum' up with heavy playing. It is white nitro and looks like a primer coat thinly applied over mahogany. I think it will be very porous and absorb sweat/dirt/oil easily. Yeah, i know i can wipe it down regularly, but eventually the stains will be difficult to remove, especially as the finish will not appreciate heavy buffing. My dilemma ? Should i refinish it ? I have the gear and the know how. I am leaning toward white with a slight yellow tinge to the gloss coat for that aged look, and it's already half primed! What is nagging at the back of my tiny brain is the notion that these 3 p'up V's are quite rare, and that maybe i should leave it be. Any one know how many were made, certainly a far smaller run than the 2 p'up v's ? What to do, what to do ? Opinions please.
EthanBrackett
Mako, if the neck annoys you, It'd probably annoy somebody else too... If you can redo the finish professionally, and have it look like something Gibson did, I'd do it.
mako shark
I think your like me, Ethan. Always room to improve as long as its not a historic ! I tend to keep my buys, so resale is of little consequence to me. Trouble is, if i start improving, i dunno' when to stop sometimes ! starting to think about ceramic p'ups to go with that 6 way chicken head ! New tuners...stetsbar......tripleshots........
