Need help identifying 70's Les Paul

Hi Everyone,

A friend of mine pulled this Les Paul out of a closet in her house and wanted me to take a look at, find out what it is, value, all that. The serial number comes back as '70, '71, or '72 made in K-zoo or Nashville. That all seems normal, but what I find odd is the pickup rings around the mini humbuckers.

My best guess is maybe this is a Standard modded into a Deluxe? The truss rod cover looks newish, tuners are replaced, and I think it has a new tail piece and bridge.

Anything I'm missing here? Any guess on what it might be worth? I have more pictures if need be.

Thanks a bunch!

-Chris

The guitar looks to be a 1972 Les Paul Deluxe. The Gibson logo on the pickup, (One pickup was changed to a Seymore Duncan). The Pickups have what was refered to as "Goof Rings" surrounding them, this was only done around 1972. Also, the Cherry Sunburst color dates it around that time. The Les Paul Standard wasn't reissued until 1975.

Earlier Les Paul Deluxe models (as your's appears to be), had what Gibson described as "Goof Rings,"

or "Goof Hiders" around the pickups. Those were (originally) used to hide less than perfect routing,

(tooling marks) for the converted P-90 to Mini-humbucker pickups. As they improved on that technique,

the "goof rings" were no longer needed, or used.

The "goof rings" were used from '69 to about '72. After that, they were removed.

Actually, check E-bay. Some of the ones on there with the "Goof Rings," are asking up to $3,200 or so.

Not saying that's what they GET, but...one like that, in good shape, with the rings, will usually

get more, than the one's without, as they are a bit more "rare," and older.

Good Luck!

Embossed neck p'up dates circa '70 - '72.

The only thing I'll add is that the bridge p'up has been replaced with a Seymour Duncan unit.

Find out what this one is. It will probably say on the base.

Normally replacing stuff de-values the instrument but that p'up looks quite interesting.

Nice guitar!

Thanks or all the info guys. As for a value, I'm thinking around $1500-1800.

Here's my reasoning:

The guitar is far from mint.

-Finish has many dings and dents, and a huge (belt buckle?) wear spot on the back.

-The tuners have been replaced.

-I'm fairly sure the bridge and tail piece are new. (They look really shiny, no patina)

-Slight scalloping/wear on finger board

-Replaced bridge pickup

-Newer truss rod cover (I assume the original one said "Deluxe"?)

-Frets are in decent shape, but could use a dressing.

Does that seem reasonable? Am I missing anything? How much would you guys pay for it?

Thanks again,

-Chris
