jaxson50 Posted April 4, 2013 Posted April 4, 2013 Marty had a great voice, one of my favorite country artist.
milod Posted April 4, 2013 Posted April 4, 2013 Zenken... I'm not sure you'd like a response to your question. Virtue, btw, comes from the Latin word "man." That term is used far less today than any other time in my life. A friend and onetime colleague who's young enough to be my son states bluntly that he believes that even within his lifetime men have been feminized and women masculin-ized by cultural currents encouraged by current law, urbanization and the media in general. I'm not sure I'd argue the point. Like Desperados Waiting for a Train... m
retrosurfer1959 Posted April 4, 2013 Posted April 4, 2013 Yep one of the best of the ballads that were as much a story as a song. Its to bad that was real country western music and part of the story telling of a bygone time. Now it's more about light and selling t-shirts. And yep most young men don't even know what it means to be a man anymore and the world and men in general are diminished because of it.
brc Posted April 4, 2013 Posted April 4, 2013 I used to watch Marty Robbins in the mid 50s on black and white TV. Loved his music then and still do. Matter of fact I just received a replacement Marty Robbins "Gun Fighter Ballads" CD in the mail about 5 days ago. I wore the other one out.
milod Posted April 4, 2013 Posted April 4, 2013 The late Chris Ledoux... who knew when he was taking that ride on that black horse, and did as he sang here. m
Californiaman Posted April 5, 2013 Posted April 5, 2013 I heard this song on either KPIG radio or Outlaw Country this afternoon. My kids thought I was weirdin' out on them again when I took my foot off the excelorator and started cruizin'. I definitely wanted to here the entire song before we pulled into the neighborhood. It's a good song. And I enjoyed it.
milod Posted April 5, 2013 Posted April 5, 2013 Chris was quite a guy; died of a rare form of cancer far too young. A rodeo world champion, a well known singer songwriter and entertainer in some circles, a good neighbor. There's a nice statue to him in Kaycee, Wyo., where he lived. Not much of a big town there in the shadow of the Big Horns, but it does kinda encourage cowboy music just through the environment. Metaphor... that's cowboy music from beginning to end. It's not just the dogie that's headed into Montana and later the soup, it's us all. Etc., etc. Good stuff both on the surface and with the underlying meanings if you can read them. m
Californiaman Posted April 5, 2013 Posted April 5, 2013 I also heard this song today and quite think I would have enjoyed seeing the Flying Burito Brothers in concert. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A4zUylz9B6s
MissouriPicker Posted April 5, 2013 Posted April 5, 2013 Great song by Marty Robbins. Always enjoyed his music, especially the songs about The Old West. When the men were men and the sheep were scared. I used to have his Gunfighter Ballads playing in the background while I'd read everything I could find on the likes of John Wesley Harding and Will Bill Hickock. A couple of real bad asses. Great songs about a very interesting time in history.
jaxson50 Posted April 6, 2013 Posted April 6, 2013 I agree Missouri Picker, Marty gets so little respect, even a post dedicated to him turns out to be about everyone but him!
