Gibson Acoustic Spotters Guide

I am a pretty new member here but would like to make a request to the powers that be.

Would it be possible to create a Spotters Guide section where people could post pictures and info about past and present Gibson acoustic guitars (specifications, pictures and sound clips)

I am not sure if people would contribute to it or how it would be organized but I think it would be a big help (and fun) for new Gibson fans (like myself)

I have always been a Fender/Martin guy but just recently got my first Gibson acoustic and I am a new convert.

I would be willing to help and contribute if there was a need for it.

I have included a poll to see what others think about it.

Good idea but the thread would become bloated very quickly, years and the web of specs changes, even within the same year, would make it no better than using the current search function.

To be useful it would require heavy moderation to keep it factual / checkable and ultimately readable... Such a thread on j-45s alone could hit 20 pages in almost no time. Each model would probably need a thread to make it worthwhile, then would be the 'so who's going to do it?' moment.

Countless questions have been asked a million times, once more wont hurt I guess and it keeps the forum lively.

I can see why you want to do it - and it would have its merits. However, as PM has already said it would probably be too big to manage.

Nice idea though :)

Sure, I'm in. Though as PM reckons - a monumental task. Heck, there are a couple of members on here whose individual collection alone could easily exceed 20 pages of content.

Hello RusRob –

Guess you can see the whole Board and it's history – which thank heavens hasn't been deleted by an electro-cyber-crash – as the guide you're talking about.

Search back and almost all details on the 15 most well-known/owned models or more have been covered intensely. And when I say details I mean details.

Look up the threads on bursts f.x. - that alone will probably blow your mind. Add to that more technical and historical facts - on lesser famed guitars too.

These pages is a river of questions, knowledge and curious facta.

But your initiative is a good possibility to underline the above – especially for newbies and casual spectators.

You'll find it all here –

, , , and feel free to raise a Q.

A premier expert is likely to chime in before you know it.

Great place indeed.

Let's see what happens.

Welcome.

Thanks for the replies gent's,

I have used the search function on this board a few times and it is pretty helpful. I guess I was asking this question in response to another post I made showing a picture of Gibson I didn't know what model it was. Prior to that I spent about an hour trying to Google it but it is pretty difficult doing a search of something you don't know and only have a picture of.

The reason I posed that idea is that I had a forum for over 10 years that was specifically about early Formula One racing. It was based around a racing sims but we maintained a section that was pretty much what I was asking about here. It was a complete new sub-forum with sections denoting each year. Guys could come in and post pictures or info about a specific car. So if they had a love for the 1967 American Eagle that Dan Gurney drove they could go to the 1967 thread and post away. We didn't really have any more format than that but someone wanting learn about Formula One racing in 1955 could easily go look through that section. There was not a lot of maintenance other than occasionally having to move a post that was made in the wrong section. But it still needed to be maintained non the less.

So then I will ask the same question I did in my other post:

Is there a good Gibson "spotters" guide around? Book form or on the internet? I would personally like to learn more about the different models but it is difficult to search this forum for something I have no idea what model number I am looking for.

I see your point in upgrading in a more archive-like order. A thing like that would be introduced in many fields of information and gathered knowledge elsewhere on the web and out in the ol' world.

Not sure it got legs here tho, but as said, let's wait and see.

The book you would enjoy a lot is called Gibson's Fabulous Flat-top Guitars - an illustrated history and guide.
