EuroAussie Posted April 5, 2013 Posted April 5, 2013 Interesting. Similar tone, the 2013 seemed brighter, tighter which is expected. However, at least from these vids the tone didnt grab me that much, something was missing. Maybe the nice warm shimmer that I normally associate with J-45's, as if there was almost too much note seperation. It sounded better on the Music Villa sample to my ears.
ParlourMan Posted April 5, 2013 Posted April 5, 2013 Either that or a man-crush on Tony's heavy thumb... Kinky ;)

Del Nilppeznaf Posted April 5, 2013 Posted April 5, 2013 Hmmm? I like this video for comparrison.... more so than the last Music Villa one... I think the 2011 lutheirs choice sound more balanced and responsive, esp' in the highs. And again i feel the 2013 J35 sound too bass heavy for my liking.... if the bass is this pronounced now I would only think it will become more so as the guitar ages ? I have been considering one of these new J35's..but not sure if I'm taken with the clips I have listened to. Incedently, i also listened to a Lowden and a Martin from the same youtube poster..and i like the sound from the clips.
davenumber2 Posted April 5, 2013 Author Posted April 5, 2013 Personally I thought the new 2013 model was the better sounding of the two. Sounded more crisp and sparkly.
veggieryan Posted April 5, 2013 Posted April 5, 2013 for my ear, and this is from what I played in person.... the new J35 is much sweeter... you can hear how much lighter the build is when you play it and its seems they are using a new source of top and back/sides wood... very silky looking....its really something... definitely my favorite of all the slope shoulder Gibsons now... for my ear it has the light barky growl that I want in a Gibson. It seems like Gibson is upping their game... I can't wait to play more 2013 models.
Rambler Posted April 6, 2013 Posted April 6, 2013 They are close but you can hear the adi-sitka differential. More definition and clarity form the LC, more woof, shimmer and and shine from the New Kid. Mileage may vary depending on playing needs. Old time pickers could be happy with either, but might lean to the LC for the punch & clarity. If you are in the Holly-Hopkins Folkie-Rocky nexus, then the New Kid. Or, as EA says, more likely a J45 to fit the bill.
rbpicker Posted April 6, 2013 Posted April 6, 2013 Well, I kept searching and found a new J-35 that I could not resist. It has the signature Gibson thump, big bass and clear trebles. Nice midrange as well. I just couldn't leave it hanging there in the shop. I keep all my guitars tuned down a half-step and this one responds very nicely to that lowered tuning. I have D'Addario lights on in now, but will try other strings and, of course, make a bone saddle for it. That should mellow it out a bit. So far, so good. BTW, this guitar is lighter than a bag of chips, which really pleases me. RB

RB roger that, these new J35's are really something special. ....makes me wonder if this is going to change Gibsons overall price range... does your top have that silky grain?

I should stop judging from clips on the inter web I suppose. I maybe in the market for a new guitar..and these are certainly looking like an option. I am still a little unsure on the actual spec's on the nut width and neck profile. The Gibson site states they have 1.75 inch width at the nut? Is this correct..i thought they may have had a wider nut than say the HB ? I'm looking for a more finger picking friendly model.. do these J35's fit the bill ? Edit i meant to state the nut width listed on Gibson says 1.725...which is the same as the Hb..is this right ???
rbpicker Posted April 7, 2013 Posted April 7, 2013 Veggie... yes, the top is fully silked. Can't wait until it starts to darken. That will really bring out the silking. Del, when I played it in the store, I assumed the nut width was 1 3/4, however I just measured it and it is 1 11/16. It somehow feels wider than my Martin. It certainly facilitates fingerpicking very well. I do 90% finigerpicking and this plays like a dream, so I would try one out before dismissing it. The neck is fatter than the Martin neck, which perhaps is what I was feeling at the store. The spacing at the bridge is 2 3/16, which again is not a true fingerstylist's dream, but it sure works well for me. Best to find one and take it for a drive. I still can't get over how light and resonant it is. Reminds me of my 62 J45 in that regard. RB

A friend is looking for a new dred so we put it through it's paces. I couldnt fault it and I couldnt put it down, must have played it for a good 30 mins. He asked to play another so we could compare them. They brought out another one and it was just as good. I love the look of the natural neck, sides and back and they have no weight to them at all. If I were looking for a dred right now I would have bought one there and then. I hope he gets one. We compared it to a standard J45. The J45 felt more expensive, was heavier and seemed to have more of a rich tone. I preferred the more open, airy and more balanced tone of the J35 overall. I think he did too.
