Was just having a peek at the AGF show and tell section where people post clips...went to have a look at one bloke's clip of a fingerstyle arrangement of a Paul Simon tune(he does pretty good clips) and this came up when i clicked on youtube link

"John Doe" has been terminated because we received multiple third-party claims of copyright infringement regarding material the user posted"

I didn't put the guy's name here but it was on the above youtube statement........so this guy has lost all his clips?..would it be because maybe he had ads and was doing lots of beatles etc covers?..

is this related to the same copywrite stuff as Wily's experience? curious ..all those millions of covers and this bloke gets fingered.

First I've heard of this. I would guess you are correct. If he monetized the clips, he would (or COULD but probably won't) make money off of a song he doesn't own any rights to.

I decided to monetize my clips after the first one because I figured "YOUTUBE" would be more apt to "advertise" them on other peoples sidelines if THEY could make a few cents. I have copyrights from the Library Of Congress on all of my songs on Youtube.

I don't have any pipe dreams of having a viral video and making any money from the clips, but these are songs that I own and would be tickled shirtless if Toby Keith or someone with Horsepower was to bump into one and record it. How his "people" have remained so incompetent in finding these songs for him up to this point is beyond me.

I think if they get a complaint they have to act. My son participated in a charity event "Dancing With Pittsburgh Celebrities" and all the routines are up on YouTube except that his has no music behind it because he used a Michael Jackson track and whoever owns it complained. The other routines that used generic music are still there.

Our local Pizza joint that has music sometimes got one of those letters. He still has music, just doesn't advertise it anymore.

Happened to us 3-4 times with covers we've posted on our AyeTunes account. When they contact you ye get a big spiel about copyright theft etc.. To be honest I replied the same thing each time...

Go f Yerselves.. Be reasonable, it's one of millions of covers on youtube and we make no claim to own the materials rights or that we composed it. If you disagree that much you take it down.

Not been pulled yet but had multiple threats now... I did reply to YouTube specifically saying take it down, take all the covers down, enforce copyright brutally on your content and you'll be left with bugger all and hardly any traffic. Your move....

Do you get the chance to slip them a few bucks to ....you know...., or they just turn it off?

(If I have to give them a percentage for every 'view' of my videos, what is the cost? One cent? One Dollar? Thousand?)

A percentage of one cent to the songwriter, I would guess $20 would cover it.....I spend more on strings, but that goes back to the beginning......

Arguably these original artists make their career with these songs and as such a few covers by fans and bedroom guitarists presents no danger to original artists... In fact perhaps the opposite, someone may be a subscriber to an account where someone does covers, hear a version of a song then go and look for the original artists song and perhaps even buy it.

What these mofos are doing is just exerting controls, it's nonsense, I mean someone covering original music printing CDs and selling them, yes that's cheeky and deserves a slap, but uploading a cover for people to view and no money is exchanging hands... Ludicrous.

I read an interesting piece on illegal music collections and people who worked for publishing rights orgs, seems many are of the opinion it's one rule for them and one for the rest of us. Upload your covers and when they contact you wringing tell them to go f themselves...

The copyright holder has to make an effort to enforce their copyright, or else they can loose it legally. I suspect that's what's going on. The copyright holder picks a few videos or recordings to shut down so they can later point to cases where they defended their copyright, and at the same time ignores others and claims they were unaware.

What I find fascinating is that in some YouTube videos where copyrighted original recordings are used as background music, YouTube automatically identifies it (ala Shazaam), and puts a link to the track on iTunes, so it can be purchased. That's genius, and a win for both the person making (non-profit) use of the track (and so is promoting it), and the original artist, who stands to gain from exposure and a sale.

And I still have to wonder if it's only videos that are monetized? This I get. But the ones just for fun, what the heck......
