Californiaman Posted April 9, 2013 Posted April 9, 2013 We're going to look at a litter of Golden Retrievers this coming Sunday. The lady has been breeding goldens for 25 years. My wife has always wanted a golden retriever. Getting her take the plunge is a different subject all together because she has an underlying fear of dogs. She's seen well behaved adult and adolescent goldens and didn't really have a problem with them so hopefully a puppy will be the right thing for her. What type of dog do you own? How does your dog's temperment and disposition, as well as it's inbred natural character work for you? I wanted a rouch collie (lassie type dog), but I'll settle for a golden.
Bender 4 Life Posted April 9, 2013 Posted April 9, 2013 our current "herd" is made up of a geriatric American Pitt Bull Terrier (APBT) and 4 of his offspring (all 7 yrs old) from mating him with a Dingo/Minature Sheperd hybrid. They're all wonderful family pets that also keep us & our home safe. None of them are mean, we've raised them all with love and spoiled them rotten, and Mrs.B.& I are viewed/treated as the Alphas in our "pack".....which functions wonderfully as a group. at one time, I believed the media hype about APBTs, and rescued our Rocky from conditions beyond description.....he was so starved that he was cannibalizing the meat from the sides of his own feet to survive.... we rescued and adopted him, and he's been far and away the gentlest, most loving pet we've ever had.
Izzy Posted April 9, 2013 Posted April 9, 2013 YAY! I love animal threads. That's what I get to look like when I get older if I gain a few pounds (gramma rocks!)...and my best friend, Shelby; Japanese Chin retired show pooch. Japanese Chins do NOT bark and they don't require much exercise. I work LONG shifts and sleep by day so she is perfect for me. Good luck with your doggie adoption. It is a big step and with an active dog like a Retriever...be sure to have the time to exercise and play for sure or you may not like how he expends that energy at home. @ Bender PBTs have a sad rep, but since they're raised to fight by many morons...I still get scared. I met one once that was such a sweetie, though. Its all about the home. Glad yours is loved and saved.
Searcy Posted April 9, 2013 Posted April 9, 2013 This is my dog Jack. I made him from parts I found beside the road.
CindyC Posted April 9, 2013 Posted April 9, 2013 You can't go wrong with a Golden! They are the best dogs ever, beautiful, obedient and loving. They want nothing more to do than please their masters. These are my two current dogs, Cubby the Golden and Louie the Cavalier King Charles, who's personality is of a golden but a little lazier. lol I wish you luck in picking out your new pup!! Your wife will fall in love with the gentle disposition Golden's are know for.
DanvillRob Posted April 9, 2013 Posted April 9, 2013 I might have a Pug or two. I lost my 17 year-old guy last October, I lost my 15 year-old girl last January, and one of my 13 year-old girls in March. I have another 13-year old girl who won't make it too much longer, but I enjoy her every day. Here's her photo:

Here's her photo I'm sure thats been tough to lose three pets in such a short amount of time, hope this girl surprises you and lives longer than expected. Looks like she's all ready to go somewhere in her car seat!
ZenKen Posted April 9, 2013 Posted April 9, 2013 Here's my bad man Oscar. Mini-dachshund. We also have a sweet Huskie/Shepard mix named Ginger (no pic in my photobucket library). She's 4 times as big but Oscar runs the house.

The girl in the car seat can't walk, (she has wheels), but is my constant buddy. Here my old guy who lived to over 17 years. His name is CH Fullmoon I'm Engaging, ROM**....but we called him 'Gage'.
buliwyf Posted April 9, 2013 Posted April 9, 2013 At the moment we have 3 doggies two Irish Wolfhounds and one rescue PitBull.Weve had our pitbull Hazel for 12 of her 13 years, our neighbor was tired of 3 kids and one dog and was going to give her to the pound and with the number of pits they have now I didnt think her survival rates were to good. She is still one of the most loving cuddly dog we have had and I would reccomend that breed to anyone even with kids they are sweet. Our other two come from a breeder one 8 year old gray brindle 210lb 7 ft tall sweetheart nammed Goliath. Also from the same breeder a Wheaton normal sized 140lb 6ft tall boy named Buliwyf. The Wolfhounds are large lapdogs and out on a walk not many people are afraid of them. The give off an air of non threatning, loving dont be affraid of me because of me thing. One thing Californiamancheck with your local dog pounds and check the internet for a purebreed rescue club that rescues pure Golden Retrievers and looks for good homes for them. They are a great dog BTW so arent the Pit Bulls but any dog has to be raised right.Make sure they are socialized especially if you have a dog park around and train them well with lots of love and it would be hard to go wrong. Please post pics of the new monster.
Big Bill Posted April 9, 2013 Posted April 9, 2013 This is our beloved Scabs. He is a rescue. He gets in the liqueur cabinet sometimes.
matonanjin Posted April 9, 2013 Posted April 9, 2013 This was my buddy, Mato Nanjin, which if you haven't figured out is where my username is from. We lost him last summer to old age. He was my constant companion. Went every where with me. Meet Hallee. She was supposed to be my wife's pet but she has become daddy's girl. She is under foot constantly. When I'm in my office she is under my chair. I can't get rid of her. Except when I practice. Then she leaves!
surfpup Posted April 9, 2013 Posted April 9, 2013 This is my dog Jack. I made him from parts I found beside the road. Jack looks like he's got a bit of Catahoula in him
Mark Posted April 9, 2013 Posted April 9, 2013 I have had Golden Retrievers for many years and one true trait is Males....I love you Females...Love me Either way their awesome. Good Luck
RowdyMoon Posted April 9, 2013 Posted April 9, 2013 Our 3....2 borders "Daytona (14 years) and Bristol (13 years) " same parents dif litter (obvee) and the fat cat " Muzzbe " Don't ya hate it when your pet mouse leaves crap lying around your deck! Bristol..
Californiaman Posted April 9, 2013 Author Posted April 9, 2013 It's good reading about everybodies pet's. Looking forward to seeing what we come up with. Like I said, I'd love a rough collie. We've got a cat. She's a-fraidy-cat. Too scared to go outside most of the time. But then again, she's probably afraid the ground squirels in the yard are going to grab her and haul her off hog-tied and blindfolded to the high grass somewhere out back. You know how squirels can be? Right?
surfpup Posted April 9, 2013 Posted April 9, 2013 This is our 11 year old beagle, Jackson. He's cute, but I gotta admit he's a giant pain in the a$$. I think perhaps that beagles are not suited to suburban life. He eats everything which makes him sick. And he is totally UN-trainable.. but cute.
retrosurfer1959 Posted April 10, 2013 Posted April 10, 2013 Here's mine studying the tortoise in the back yard they spent hours just looking at each other. My terrier passed away a couple months back and I can't even think about replacing him yet. I had him 17 years so no complaints I guess and he was a great dog quiet dependable and a great companion.
Guest Farnsbarns Posted April 10, 2013 Posted April 10, 2013 This is May. She's a boerboel (boxer x mastif). My best friend!
Izzy Posted April 10, 2013 Posted April 10, 2013 This is May. She's a boerboel (boxer x mastif). My best friend! All that mastif went straight to her head Bet she makes an awesome playmate and guard dog!

I met one once that was such a sweetie, though. Its all about the home. Glad yours is loved and saved. Izzy, your Gramma is a beautiful lady ! and, thank you for realizing that not all Pitts are bloodthirsty killers.....their natural lack of human aggression is why they're abused in the pits.....dogfighters are cowardly, and wouldn't be in there w/a dog that might turn on them. the ones that DO become aggressive, always have a tale of tragedy behind them, because unless their minds & spirits are broken, they're naturally docile. it's also estimated that up to 60% of "Pitt-Bull" attacks are actually committed by similar breeds of dog, but the APBT gets the rap for them all..... the link below is to a game proving this..... everyone that sees this, click the link, and click on the dog YOU think is a Pitt Bull.....you'll see what breed it actually is when you click it. so far, i've personally seen only about 10% of people i've had play this here at home, get it right the 1st try can you pick the Pitt ? sorry for hijacking the thread, and i'm shutting up now, but this is something really close to my heart, it would be interesting to see how many here honestly get it the 1st try.
LarryUK Posted April 10, 2013 Posted April 10, 2013 My two. Ellie and Red. I used to believe the rubbish that the media gave out about 'Staffies'. But My partner had a rescue staffy 'Frankie' (black one below) and he changed my view of the breed. She now has George (blue) and all four get on great. The bottom line is..It's the human that's at fault, not the dog. I used to have a Yorkie. but I wouldn't have another breed now. Staffs are a fantastic breed.
Izzy Posted April 10, 2013 Posted April 10, 2013 @ Bender I had a fear of dogs...all dogs even little ones, when I was younger, so I took a job at a vet clinic as a tech. My first dog to bathe was a pit bull and I was terrified...until I got him outside and got him wet and started laddering him. He was grunting in joy and I was like, "wait a minute, this dude is not crazed." The more agressive dogs were shelter dogs (random breeds and mutts)except for the German Shepard. No matter how bad the shepards had it, they came into the clinic somehow knowing we were there to help and they were subdued as lambs. I'm still scared of certain breeds. Wimaraners scare the heck out of me, but I know its me. On your site I saw a world of mastifs, boxers, rotties and didn't pick out the pit. I picked the bull terrier, though, since its the closest relative.
badbluesplayer Posted April 10, 2013 Posted April 10, 2013 Here's a video of Maggie licking one of the kitties. She likes to mother the cats.
