timbliz Posted April 9, 2013 Posted April 9, 2013 Hello! I'm wanting to replace the machine heads on my 1980 SG Firebrand, but I cannot seem to locate genuine Gibson ones that will not require making new screw holes. Any ideas?
SGgypsyboy Posted April 9, 2013 Posted April 9, 2013 Here you go.I believe Gibson was using Schallers at that time which yours appear to be, only imprinted with Gibson. The Schaller M6 model have the exact same screw tab positions. These have different shaped buttons but are a direct replacement. My link
timbliz Posted April 9, 2013 Author Posted April 9, 2013 Thanks! That sux! Can I get replacement buttons for them?
Greg Jacob Posted April 9, 2013 Posted April 9, 2013 Thanks! That sux! Can I get replacement buttons for them? Not with the keystone shape. You might want to try to polish up the ones you have; they might look good.
timbliz Posted April 9, 2013 Author Posted April 9, 2013 No, they are trashed...looks like I'm stuck with Gibson Modern tuners and making new holes?
timbliz Posted April 9, 2013 Author Posted April 9, 2013 Will Gibson or Grover buttons fit onto Schaller tuners?
Greg Jacob Posted April 9, 2013 Posted April 9, 2013 No, they are trashed...looks like I'm stuck with Gibson Modern tuners and making new holes? If you are going to drill, I'd go Grover http://www.stewmac.com/shop/Tuners/Guitar,_solid_peghead_tuners/Grover_Tuners/Grover_Rotomatic_Keystone_Tuners.html
timbliz Posted April 9, 2013 Author Posted April 9, 2013 I found tulip buttons for Schallers...from Schaller...but they won't deliver to the States!?! They would have delivered them to me when I was in The 'Stan though!!! http://guitar-machine-heads.com/hp291926/Guitar-Button-11-CH-11080200.htm
timbliz Posted April 9, 2013 Author Posted April 9, 2013 Vintage Copper Tulip Buttons They come in Vintage Copper too, both the tuner and the button...this is very interesting...I think they might look pretty nice on a Firebrand

I'm sure they'll ship them across the pond for a price. http://www.rosetti.co.uk/product/tulip-machinehead-button-chrome
timbliz Posted April 11, 2013 Author Posted April 11, 2013 Allparts is ordering them for me. I went with the Vintage Copper, so I had to get the Vintage Copper bridge and tailpiece also. It wasn't cheap, but I think it will look great. I'll post before and after pics when the hardware arrives...in 1-3 MONTHS! :( Thanks guys!
