The G Posted April 10, 2013 Posted April 10, 2013 Anyone try one of these, or better still purchase one. Did you have an opportunity to compare to a regular Advanced Jumbo,or the Randy Scruggs model . What did you think?
aliasphobias Posted April 10, 2013 Posted April 10, 2013 The "pro" and "artist" models made specially for Guitar Center don't seem to get much respect around here. I can't say I am a fan of them either. If you are able I would play all 3 and then decide from there. The Randy Scruggs models that I have played are excellent guitars. I have a '92 AJ and it is a first quality instrument in every way. If you decide on the "pro" don't expect it to hold value very well, their resale is generally poor. Good Luck with the search!
rar Posted April 10, 2013 Posted April 10, 2013 The "pro" and "artist" models made specially for Guitar Center don't seem to get much respect around here. ... I don't think it's a lack of respect, so much as annoyance at the names. The present case is a perfect example. The so-called "AJ Pro" has nothing much in common with the AJ beyond a similar body shape, the same scale length, and the same combination of tonewoods. Despite the claims that it has "vintage-correct appointments and styling", it has the wrong bridge, the wrong neck inlays, the wrong logo, the wrong bracing, etc. It may be a perfectly nice guitar, but it doesn't look or sound anything like an AJ. So why call it an AJ, unless the object is to mislead people? And of course the "Hummingbird Artist" is even more egregious example -- it's not even the same size and shape as a Hummingbird. Hard to imagine the motive for the name was anything other than "this Songwriter will sell better if we say it's a Hummingbird". -- Bob
MissouriPicker Posted April 12, 2013 Posted April 12, 2013 I've only played one, and that was naturally at Guitar Center. Good sound and very nice neck. Great playability. I guess my only issue is that these guitars made strictly for GC are not really AJs or Hummingbirds, etc. Perhaps if they had named them differently I'd take a more serious look at them. Martin and Taylor have so many different names for guitars, I figure Gibson and GC could have come-up with something more original. I understand they want to make the connection with the Gibson icons, but it just doesn't set well with me. As far as guitars go, I think the GC Hummingbird and AJ are very good instruments. They're just not Hummingbirds and AJs.
