hardydog Posted April 10, 2013 Posted April 10, 2013 Hello to you all. I'm in Liverpool, England. Been trying to play for a few years since my wife bought me a guitar for my 50th birthday. Anyway last week at a local auction I bought a Gibson J45 1996 reissue and a Gurian JBH 1981. I was told from the auctioneer that they had been cased and stored since new by a guitar collector and they are both absolutely mint (perfect). Now I have a real reason to take my playing to the next level as there is no use in having a top class instrument and not being able to show it off to family and friends. Cheers Hardydog

E-minor7 Posted April 10, 2013 Posted April 10, 2013 Hello hardydog, Liverpool. Wondering if you can be a liverpudlian without playing a J-160E. Naaah, , , just a thin joke from here. Welcome to Gibson River - bring on the Mersey-spirit.
Versatile Posted April 10, 2013 Posted April 10, 2013 Hi Mr h... Welcome to the forums... What we want to know is What was your 'birthday' guitar? V
aliasphobias Posted April 10, 2013 Posted April 10, 2013 Welcome hardydog! I'm new here myself. Nice job on the auction acquisitions. My hat's off to you beginning to play later in life. Pick it up everyday and you'll make excellent progress. If there is one thing we acquire with the passing of years it is a dogged determination!!
mountainpicker Posted April 10, 2013 Posted April 10, 2013 Welcome hardydog! I too took up the guitar at 50 (or was it 49?) and I too own a J-45 (1997) and my Gurian is a JM. Can't remember the year it was made (1983?) as it lives in North Carolina at an old friends house so I have something good to play when visiting, plus it likes the humidity there much better than western Colorado. Your brazilian JBH is a very rare instrument and I think you will find that as you play it it "wakes up" and begins to sound better and better, so will your J-45. Most Gurians of that era have a 1 5/8 inch neck width but mine plays with a feeling much wider so when you compare it to your J-45 you'll notice that right off I suppose. Or mayber your Gurian is different in that regard? My Gurian is a mahogany (hence the M in the JM) and sounds a lot like a Gibson. It's all good. Practice is where it's at on the guitar so have fun with the journey and persevere. I'd advise beginning to work on an F barre chord right from the beginning and start stretching some muscles. Keep the faith.
BigKahune Posted April 10, 2013 Posted April 10, 2013 . Welcome. Congrats on your new guitars. You've got to post pics. Please. Motherofpearl Posted April 10, 2013 Posted April 10, 2013 Welcome and congrats on the new to you J45.
struma6 Posted April 10, 2013 Posted April 10, 2013 Welcome! My good friend has 2 Gurians and they are great guitars. (SM2 and an SM3) Gurian had the most unique neck set arrangement I've ever known of. Look inside the soundhole, up at the neck block...you'll see 2 ebony pins, they are used for resets/securing the neck. If you ever need a neck reset, be sure the luthier is familiar with the Gurian ways! He only made about 5,000 guitars and now focuses on luthier tools. Some of the top builders today sat at Gurians feet to learn the trade!
MissouriPicker Posted April 10, 2013 Posted April 10, 2013 Welcome to the forum, Hardydog. Sounds like you've got two great guitars. Guitars like these can be a real inspiration to get better and better.... Keep the fire burning. You're going to have a blast.
telemaster03 Posted April 11, 2013 Posted April 11, 2013 Hey Hardydog, congratulations on the guitars...they sound like good ones! I hope you enjoy pickin' on those guitars. I was telling my wife tonight that I feel genuinely bad for people who don't play guitar. I'm not sure how they get through their days!
merseybeat1963 Posted April 12, 2013 Posted April 12, 2013 Two guitars like that in one day..that is something. Get them set up for low comfortable play by a good guy.. May they bring you great happiness. P.S, Ever been to Kismet Indian Resturant ? : ) Last time we were in Liverpool a few years ago it had closed but signs were all intact.
