Hey guys, I have a problem when I grab one of my gibsons I have 2 Sgs and one les paul, after a few hours. I always have to tune down about half a note. I hang my gibsons on the wall if not there I have a floor stand that also grabs the guitars by the neck. so one variable is they all three hang by the necks. this has happened since I have had them even with different brand strings. I use Gibson brite wires or boomers all 10s. if I can think of something else ill post it. any help would be appreciated.

If you are going sharp it sounds like the guitar or neck is bending back or expanding. Is the room where you keep them normally cool? If it happens after you play a while, the heat from your hands and body may just be warming them up and causing some warping from where they were when you started playing. The string tension on a cool guitar at rest causing them to bend in versus your body heating them up and causing them to expand or bend back. This change in temp also applies to the strings themselves. They could also be changing tension due to temperature of your hands if they were cooler before you started playing. Just a theory.

I think it could be that you're bending your strings up and they're getting bound up in the nut or saddle before returning to pitch. Try putting some graphite shavings in your nut slots. That helped me a lot with my SG. It's just a temporary fix though

guitar players from just a few decades ago would have sold their souls for a guitar that would stay in tune "a couple hours"...as having to "test & tweak" every couple songs was the norm.

I sure wouldn't worry about this....sounds like normal neck expansion/contraction.

thanks guys. i am suspecting room temperature also. i use graphite on all my guitars so i can scratch that off, alto that was a good suggestion. My acoustic guitars dont have a problem with their tuning. (something to think about.) btw it is a plus when i play xanado by rush since it is tuned up about half a note. lol thanx everybody.

Guitars like to be stored at room temperature (68F or 20C). Let the guitar acclimate to room temp. even when it's coming out of cold or hot temps for a hour at least. Like in the winter when you are bringing your guitar in out of the cold, best let it warm in the room. Tuning going sharp sounds like its too cold in the room. It will go flat when its too hot. (I think, or the other way round) :)

they are kept in the living room where the temperature is comfortable 68degrees. could it be because of the way the weight from hangng them on the wall when im not playing them. i could understand this with the les paul because of the weight but not the Sgs. the neck relief on all three is .012 or super close.and all other specs. are gibson specs. i put them all on the couch tonight to see what happens in the morning just to eliminate that variable. thanks guys.

All my guitars (Gibson, Gretsch, Fender, Epi's) have some tuning issues, when I first tune,

and play, even if it's only been overnight. Especially with the (plain) "G" string. My house

is comfortable (70 degrees (80, in summer), 50%+/- humidity) and it still happens. Wood moves.

They All "settle down" after about an hour or so, of playing. Then, they seem to remain pretty

steady, until they're once again left unplayed, overnight, or longer. Then, we repeat the cycle.

My Rickenbacker 12-string guitars, are the most stable, of the lot! Maybe it's the twin

truss rods, that help those? Not sure.
